Major improvement projects are scheduled for Interstates 40 and 85 in Orange County to improve mobility and safety in the Durham- Chapel Hill-Hillsborough corridor. NCDOT plans to widen I-40 to six lanes between I-85 and the Durham County line, with construction to begin in 2022. The N.C. 86 interchange will also be improved. There are plans to add lanes to I-85 between the I-40 split and the Durham County line, with construction tentatively set for FY 2029. INTERSTATE UPGRADES

Several planned projects will change how people travel in southern Hillsborough. NCDOT plans to widen South Churton/Old N.C. 86 from Interstate 40 north to the Eno River. The goal is to relieve congestion and delays on South Churton and provide north-south pedestrian and bicycle connectivity. Construction is scheduled for 2025. Starting in 2021, NCDOT also will help fund construction of a Hillsborough train station on the North Carolina Railroad line, to give the area a new stop for the Carolinian and Piedmont passenger trains. HILLSBOROUGH BIKE, RAIL AND STREET IMPROVEMENTS

State and local leaders including Gov. Roy Cooper met in Greensboro on Nov. 7. 2019, to celebrate progress toward the completion of Greensboro’s Urban Loop. A section of Interstate 840 between Bryan Boulevard and U.S. 220/Battleground Avenue was dedicated in memory of Doug Galyon, a former chairman of the N.C. Board of Transportation and its longest-serving member. Officials also cut a ribbon to open I-840 between U.S. 220/Battleground Avenue and Lawndale Drive. The final leg from Lawndale Drive to U.S. 29 GREENSBORO is expected to be completed in 2022. URBAN LOOP
