We were coming down to the end of the Kresge Challenge, Awhich ended Dec. 1, 2002, and it was going to be close, if we hit goal, that meant $850,000 from Kresge and our library would be funded. I'll let you in on a little secret: earlier in 2002 I had looked over our remaining prospects for the library campaign and concluded our chances of success were less than certain. We had made great progress but we had tapped almost everyone for their support. I contacted the helpful folks at Kresge and said, "What if we get near the end of this and we need a little more time? Do you ever extend the deadline?" Kresge, who specializes in "end game" challenges, had a fairly definitive answer: we should plan on meeting the challenge by the agreed-to deadline. It was the best possible answer. The risk of losing that $850,000 grant was real, and we conveyed that urgency to our donors and prospects. They came through in a way I have never witnessed before, from small gifts to large, and helped Whittier complete its single most successful fund-raising project ever. We hit goal a scant four days before the deadline, when the Rose Hills Foundation put us over the top with their second grant for the project. And Kresge sent us their check for $850,000 the following month. The Rose Hills Foundation Center for Library and Information Resources, which comprises the Bonnie Bell Wardman Library and our Information Technology Services, is now open. Finished on-time and on-budget, it is an incredible new resource for Whittier College. Thanks, and congratulations, for this success. We got to savor this achievement in my office for a few minutes before we received our first, "OK, so now what?" question. We had an answer ready: we need to build a stronger Whittier Fund, the annual contributions made by our alumni and friends. Over the course of the past ten years or so, the Whittier Fund (the foundation upon which our long-term success is built) had taken a back seat to both the "Endowing the Tradition" Campaign and the library project. Now it is critical that we increase our alumni participation rate. (Why? Because others, like foundations, look to see if "those who know the institution best" support us before making their gifts and grants.) Now we must ask our existing contributors to increase their support. (Why? Because a $1 today does not buy what $1 did last year.) We've made progress in the past two years; with your help, we will continue that progress. The other major objective for Whittier is to increase endowment. That often happens through bequests, and even donors who give modestly throughout their lives discover that they can be major donors through their estate plans, (for example, through a gift of property that was acquired years ago that has now increased significantly in value). Some feel uncomfortable talking about their plans or believe planned giving is too complicated. I assure you that if you call our Director of Planned Giving Jim Ehlers '92, at (562) 907-4217, you'll discover how easy it can be. You can also send him an email at [email protected]. For starters, you may just want to ask for a brochure that spells out some of your options. Jim's help is absolutely free and pressure-free. Although he is working for Whittier College, he has professional and ethical obligations to the prospects he is working with to make sure the gifts they make are right for everyone involved. As you will see in a chart elsewhere in this Honor Roll, our grand total for 2002-03 was significantly below our 2001-02 total ($6.2 million versus $9.7 million). This is the result of both major library contributions and major bequests being received in the earlier year. These fluctuations are common, and in fact the current year will experience a similar fluctuation, this time upward. In any event, the dollar amounts are really the secondary story. The real story is what we do with your support: we give Whittier College students the great educational experience that has been the hallmark of the Poet Campus. For that, and on their behalf, Ithank you. /1 Bedford McIntosh Vice President for Advancement The ROCK HONOR ROLL SPECIAL ISSUE WHITTIER COLLEGE HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 2002-2003 The Honor Roll of Donors acknowledges those who made gifts from July 1, 2002 to June 302003 TRUSTEES Leadership, vision, and financial support are among the important contributions made by members of the Whittier College Board of Trustees each year.
