Strategy 2020-2025 Date Version Change Feb 2020 1.0 Initial Public Issue March 2020 1.1 Terminology update in Section 4 December 2020 1.2 Terminology update in Section 4 1 Introduction The 2020-2025 Squash Wales Strategy The staff and board of Squash Wales are pleased to introduce our strategy for the period 2020-2025. The strategy has been developed over approximately 1 year and has included board vision and mission sessions, public consultation as well as a thorough review of the current “state of the nation” of squash and the wider sporting landscape in Wales. The result is a strategy that will lead Squash Wales through a challenging financial period for Welsh sport which will require increased partnership working, collaboration with others and an ever-increasing focus on the health benefits of regular participation in physical activity. Building on previous work The 2020-2025 strategy builds on some work strands that first appeared in the Squash Wales 2014- 2019 strategy, which identified the themes shown below ▪ Maintaining and improving existing standards ▪ Expanding and developing community partnerships ▪ Developing and supporting elite players The 2020-2024 iteration is the first time that a strategy incorporates feedback directly from Squash Wales members, parents, supporters, officials and the welsh sporting public. The 2020-2025 strategy also incorporates some major changes that have occurred within and beyond squash in the intervening period - notably the ministerial review of Sport Wales, the release of a new Sport Wales strategy, a third failure for squash to be included in the Olympics and perhaps most importantly the rapid rise of Welsh senior players on the World stage. -

Squash Wales – Return to Play Roadmap
RETURN TO PLAY ROADMAP Return to play: The starting point “The coronavirus will remain a serious risk to us until a vaccine or an effective treatment is available. So, as we start to consider moving out of the rigid but effective control measures that we first put in place, we are clear that this is a process of managing, not eliminating risk. Much as we might want it to, ‘normal’ life will not be possible for many months – possibly years”. Welsh Government - Unlocking Our Society and Economy The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives and our sport drastically. Training and competition venues across the world closed, and our sport’s activities were suspended. With a view to the future, Squash Wales has developed a roadmap for returning to play. These guidelines are intended as recommendations for all members of the Squash community to continue to enjoy and participate in our sport during the current global health emergency, and to return to a shared enjoyment of it in the future. The guidelines are our proposed ‘traffic light’ approach to returning to play with further guidance to complement as we move through the return to play. We are closely monitoring and continuously evaluating the situation in relation to the pandemic. Being aware of the current situation, following Welsh Government guidelines and adjusting our habits accordingly will enable us to continue to practice our sport and gradually return to regular training and com- petition. Squash Wales continues to work in collaboration with other National Governing Bodies and our partners Sport Wales, Welsh Sports Association and Welsh Government to understand how these changes will take effect in our Sport. -

It has been produced with the help of other organisations including: Penarth Youth Project CLIC Online Young People's Partnership (YPP) 14-19 Network Vale Learning Network Sports Development Unit (Vale of Glamorgan Council) Libraries Service (Vale of Glamorgan Council) Vale Volunteer Bureau Barry College Learning & Development Directorate (Vale of Glamorgan Council) The aim is to provide a comprehensive source of information on all services and organisations that are accessible to young people, aged 11-25 years, and living in the Vale of Glamorgan. It is important to note that our major stakeholder, C Sport England, have continued to be supportive of actions taken. I am grateful to the Executive Team, Keir Worth, Mark Williams, Darren Bernstein and Tom Duggan for their dedication and professionalism under difficult circumstances. The Board also faced challenges. Sport England funded a consultancy to carry out a study of the Board’s skills and effectiveness. -

Despite a particularly challenging period, which has included a further reduction in staff numbers, the team has continued to develop successful participation campaigns such as Squash Girls Can and Squash 101 across an increasing number of facilities, attracted major events to the country (including the upcoming 2017 World Championships), implementing a new commercial strategy, made wide-ranging and significant improvements in governance “THIS STRATEGY MARKS A and continued to achieve junior and senior success on the world stage. TURNING POINT FOR ENGLAND Furthermore, we have entered into an exciting collaboration with US Squash that will make a step change in our technological capabilities. Monday 21st September 2020 Dear Prime Minister, Today we are calling on you to commit to positioning sport and physical activity at the heart of our nation’s post-Covid renewal. This appeal comes from a broad range of organisations that include governing bodies and those who represent hundreds of thousands of sports clubs and facilities. Our sports engage millions of children, young people, and adults every year. Our sector drives economic prosperity and social change in the UK, contributing over £16bn to the UK economy and employing more than 600,000 people. A report published by Sport England and Sheffield Hallam University this month showed that every £1 spent on community sport and physical activity generates nearly £4 for the English economy, providing an annual contribution of more than £85bn, with a social value – including physical and mental health and wellbeing, individual and community development – of more than £72bn. Grassroots sport, fitness, and wider recreational activity is proven to improve physical, mental, and social wellbeing. This makes our sector an essential service as our nation recovers from the damage caused by Covid-19. Prime Minister – you’ve long been a champion of the benefits of a physically active lifestyle and we were heartened to hear that commitment renewed this summer with the launch of the Government’s obesity strategy. Our combined sector is delighted to be showcasing its reach into the heart of communities this week as part of the inaugural Great British Week of Sport. However, we are united in our concern that at a time when our role should be central to the nation’s recovery, the future of the sector is perilous. -

Highlights of this term have been our wonderful production of Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’, national success in the Young Enterprise scheme and the news that we have once again been placed in Band 1 by the Welsh Government’s school rankings.
