    President Benjamin Harrison, Who Took Office on March 4, Issued the Proclamation on March 23, 1889, Opening the Unassigned Lands

    President Benjamin Harrison, who took office on March 4, issued the proclamation on March 23, 1889, opening the unassigned lands. It is rumored the opening on the lands would be Saturday, April 20, 1889. Being a religious man, Harrison was afraid claimants would be too tired to attend church on Sunday so the opening was reset for Monday, April 22, 1889. A cannon blast at noon and 50,000 men and single women over 21, rushed to stake a claim of up to 160 acres of land. At the beginning Norman, Guthrie, Oklahoma City and Kingfisher were to be the only four towns in the Unassigned Lands. By August there were 27 towns in the Oklahoma district with about 50,000 citizens. Congress passed the Organic Act in December, 1889, setting up a Bill of Rights, a three-part government and appointed executive and judicial officials for the seven counties formed by the Land Run. Legislative officials would be elected by the voters. The 500 plus square miles in this area became Third County. It was bordered on the west and south by the South Canadian River. The northern border was what is now SW 59th Street in Oklahoma City and the east boundary was the Pottawatomie Indian Treaty line, located near present-day 132nd Ave SE in Norman. The bounda- ries were changed in 1891. The other six counties formed by the Land Run of 1889 were Logan, Oklaho- ma, Canadian, Kingfisher, Payne and Beaver. Ten townships formed in the new county after the Run with many smaller communities and crossroads.

More than 10,000 prehistoric sites are recorded for the state, and they are estimated to represent about 10 percent of the actual number, according to archaeologist Don G. Wyckoff. Some of these sites pertain to the lives of Oklahoma’s original settlers—the Wichita and Caddo, and perhaps such relative latecomers as the Kiowa Apache, Osage, Kiowa, and Comanche. In 1793, some of the Shawnee Tribe's ancestors received a Spanish land grant at Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The 1803 Louisiana Purchase from France, brought this area under American control. In 1825, Congress ratified a treaty with the Shawnees living at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, due to encroaching colonial settlement. Shawnees ceding their Missouri lands for a 1.6 million-acre reservation in eastern Kansas. However, several years before this treaty was introduced, a group of Shawnees left Missouri to begin a journey south that led them into the territory of what is now the state of Texas, under the control of Spain.

Jazz pianist and Philadelphia native Kenny Barron kicks off the Annenberg Center’s jazz series (Philadelphia, September 14, 2012)—Nine-time Grammy®-nominated hometown jazz legend Kenny Barron will kick off the 12/13 jazz series at the Annenberg Center. An inductee in the Jazz Hall of Fame, Barron’s piano skills have led him to be called “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” by the Los Angeles Times. Barron will be joined by Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass and another Philadelphia native, Johnathan Blake, on drums. This performance will take place on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 8 PM. Tickets are $20-$55 (prices are subject to change). For tickets or for more information, please visit AnnenbergCenter.org or call 215.898.3900. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Annenberg Center Box Office. “The most lyrical piano player of our time” (Jazz Weekly), Philadelphia native Kenny Barron has been on the jazz scene for over 50 wildly successful years. Barron’s recordings have earned him nine Grammy® nominations beginning in 1992 with People Time, an outstanding duet with Stan Getz, followed by the Brazilian influenced Sambao and most recently for Freefall in 2002. Other Grammy® nominations include Spirit Song, Night and the City (a duet recording with Charlie Haden) and Wanton Spirit, a trio recording with Roy Haynes and Haden. Barron consistently wins the jazz critics and readers polls in Downbeat, Jazz Times and Jazziz magazines. In 2005, he was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame and won a MAC Lifetime Achievement Award.
