And, a special welcome to those of you who have traveled to Portland specifically for this event. We are so glad you could join us! This 17th edition of the Festival includes an array of artists spanning the full breadth of jazz; musicians, composers and producers who “take chances” with their art figure Wprominently. NEA Jazz Masters, Grammy Award Winners and DownBeat Critics Poll Winners will all take the stage during the next twelve days. We hope that in addition to seeing your favorite artists perform, that you explore the Festival offerings and venture out to catch a show by an unfamiliar artist; discovery has always been a part of tradition at the Festival. The music begins with performances by Mark de Clive-Lowe and Jaimie Branch on opening night and falls solidly into its groove with Ghost-Note and Liv Warfield on day two. If you are a fan of jazz films you will not want to miss Blue Note: Beyond the Notes, a revelatory, thrilling and emotional journey behind the scenes of Blue Note Records, the pioneering label that gave voice to some of the finest jazz artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. You can catch the film at Portland’s historic Hollywood Theatre. The first weekend sets the tone for the coming musical journey, unlocking the vast diversity of jazz including performances by Archie Shepp, Branford Marsalis, Larry Carlton and Stanley Jordon, Terry Riley, Antibalas, Mark Guiliana BEAT MUSIC, Kandace Springs, and Douyé. And, music historian and journalist, Ashley Kahn will visit with Archie Shepp and Stanley Jordan, both Jazz Conversations are free and open to the public. Additional layers unfold during the first full week with Omar Sosa & Yilian Cañizares: Aguas Trio featuring Gustavo Ovalles, David Sanborn Jazz Quartet, Tuck & Patti, Terrace Martin, Eric Gales and Ron Artis II & The Truth, Kat Edmonson and Halie Loren, Miguel Zenón Quartet, Gunhild Carling, and Aaron Goldberg. We will also honor Rebecca Kilgore as the 2020 Portland Jazz Master. And, a one-of-a-kind solo piano show debuts mid-week, pairing pianists Kenny Barron and John Medeski. You can also drop-in for a Q&A masterclass with Miguel Zenón or Aaron Goldberg, which are free and open to the public. As the final weekend of the Festival emerges the Stanton Moore Trio and NOLATET bring the “Big Easy” to Portland. Thundercat and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Harrison-Clark-Blades Trio, Dan Tepfer: Natural Machines, Kassa Overall, Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead, and Kenny Garret and María Grand provide a kaleidoscope of jazz to close the 2020 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival. Weaving the community of Portland into the fabric of the Festival continues to be an inherent element of the event. Over 15 venues across Portland will host headline shows, and Portland based artists, including Devin Phillips, Christopher Brown, Blue Cranes, Jimmie Herrod, Max Ribner, Saeeda Wright, Outer Orbit and Brown Calculus are featured on such shows; paying homage to our rich stable of local jazz talent. If an impromptu moment strikes, Al’s Den, White Eagle Saloon and over a dozen hotel and restaurant partners will be hosting live performances throughout the Festival. During the 2019 Festival, PDX Jazz proudly honored Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish with The McClendon / Makarounis Award for his significant contributions to the prosperity, preservation, and advancement of jazz music and culture in Portland. Our beloved “Jazz Commissioner” recently passed. He is respectfully in the thoughts of all of us at PDX Jazz each day. We are grateful for our community leaders, sponsors, philanthropic partners, members, donors, volunteers, colleagues in jazz and you, our audience, who have made this unique event possible. The 2020 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival represents 60 years of jazz evolution, giving voice and credence to past and present innovators. We sincerely thank you for being a part of the Biamp PDX Jazz Festival. Chris Doss Photos Courtesy of PDX Jazz of PDX Courtesy Photos Executive Director, PDX Jazz pdxjazz.com 3 02. PJF20_Welcome.indd 3 1/27/20 1:34 PM Meet Our New Artistic Director icholas Salas-Harris believes that live music is one of our last great means of social cohesion and that Jazz, in particular, is our greatest uniquely American art form. Born and raised in Illinois, he Nmoved to the Pacific Northwest in the early 2000’s where he graduated from The Evergreen State College. Starting his career as a promoter and radio host while in college, Harris has produced thousands of events across the West Coast, from Los Angeles to Seattle. His background in festivals begins with the DC Jazz Festival, where he worked his way up from a first-year volunteer position to Producer Nicholas Salas-Harris and Talent Buyer during his final year with the organization. Nicholas co-founded the Soul’d Out Festival in Portland, OR and the New Orleans Jazz Fest by Night series, serving in both events as Executive Producer. In 2017 he opened Jack London Revue in Portland, OR to help ensure that the city has the necessary platform for carrying on its long musical tradition in presenting live jazz. He sums up his mission: “In times of great social uncertainty, music and the shared live experience remain our light in the darkness that will help illuminate our way forward.” Jazz Art Exhibit During Portland’s golden WE age of jazz (1948 – 1956), Carl Henniger HAD photographed many of the era’s leading jazz JAZZ performers. His work is on exhibit at the Art Bar throughout the month of February. 4 PDX JAZZ FESTIVAL 2020 02. A priority of PDX Jazz’s mission is to provide educational outreach opportunities that communicate the music’sJ essence and cultural significance while contributing to the growth of a new audience. In addition to presenting the Biamp PDX Jazz Festival and amazing jazz talent year- round, PDX Jazz, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, offers a multi-faceted education initiative to bring jazz to students throughout the greater Portland area. We share these programs at no cost to participants thanks to the generosity of our education partners, donors and members. Resources are focused towards communities with under-served and under-represented youth, primarily Title 1A schools lacking art and/or music instruction in the urban and rural communities of Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington. Emphasis is placed on the appreciation of jazz music from a historical, sociological and cultural perspective, concepts that are relevant to every student, musicians and non-musicians alike. This allows PDX Jazz to deliver its age appropriate customized education programs to over 4,200 students annually in music, art and social studies learning settings, as well as full school assemblies.
