Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. Bridges ABSTRACT Laurel Wilt Disease (LWD) has caused severe mortality in native Persea species of the southeastern United States since it was first detected in 2003. This study was designed to document the range-wide population impacts to LWD, as well as the patterns of mortality and regeneration in Persea ecosystems. I used Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the U.S. Forest Service to estimate Persea borbonia (red bay) populations from 2003 to 2011 to see if any decline could be observed since the introduction of LWD causal agents. -

Classification of Tropical Vegetation by Dominica Elaine Harrison A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Science Earth and Atmospheric Sciences University of Alberta © Dominica Elaine Harrison, 2016 Thesis abstract The increasing anthropogenic pressure on biodiversity in the tropics is resulting in changes to ecosystem structure and increasing species extinction rates (Collen et al. 2013). These issues are heightened in the tropics where 50% of the world’s biodiversity is held in 7% of the world’s terrestrial landmass (Urquhart 2001). The biodiversity of vegetation has been used as an indicator of the overall health and processes occurring in a biological system. This thesis explores ways to quantify the biodiversity of vegetation using different avenues of vegetation classification. In the second chapter of this thesis the leaf economic spectra (LES), a vegetation classification that attempts to provide a general framework to assess plant functional diversity, is used to explore the relationships between the conventional plant functional traits with the newly applied anatomical traits (Wright et al. 2004). This system uses economic principles to help understand plant ecology trade-offs and performance strategies. The LES was used to discern two plant functional groups (PFG), lianas and tree species, at two different Panamanian tropical sites, a tropical wet forest and a tropical dry forest. This was accomplished by examining the interactions between commonly used whole-leaf traits from the LES and newly applied anatomical traits. The addition of anatomical traits to the LES is a new approach (Reich 2014). The findings of this investigation support the hypothesis that trees are resource conservative when compared to their liana counterpart, which are thought to be resource acquisitive (Schnitzer 2005; Asner and Martin 2012). -

Box 279 East Montpelier, VT 05651 For: New England Wild Flower Society 180 Hemenway Road Framingham, MA 01701 508/877-7630 e-mail: [email protected] • website: www.newfs.org Approved, Regional Advisory Council, 2002 SUMMARY Aristolochia serpentaria L., commonly known as Virginia Snakeroot, is a perennial herb in the Aristolochiaceae. Several varieties have been described in the past, but they are no longer recognized in most taxonomic manuals. Aristolochia serpentaria occurs in 26 eastern states and is common in the southern and central part of its range, while becoming rare along its northern periphery. It is listed as a Division 2 species in Flora Conservanda (Brumback and Mehrhoff et al. 1996). Connecticut is the only New England state in which it is found, where it occurs at 12 known sites in ten towns. It grows in a variety of upland forest communities, but is more likely to be found in dry, somewhat rich, rocky, deciduous or mixed deciduous-coniferous woods in Connecticut. Farther south, it also has broad environmental requirements, occupying many upland soil and forest types. Population trends for the species in Connecticut are unclear. One new population was discovered in 2001. Monitoring in 2001 of eight extant sites found that two populations had decreased, three had increased, and one had stayed the same. Several known populations are threatened by habitat modification, invasive species, or site fragility. Two extant populations have not been surveyed for several years. -

The RoC contains a list of identified substances (i) that 3 either are known to be human carcinogens or are reasonably be anticipated to be human 4 carcinogens and (ii) to which a significant number of persons residing in the United 5 States are exposed. The Secretary, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), has 6 delegated responsibility for preparation of the RoC to the National Toxicology Program 7 (NTP), which prepares the report with assistance from other Federal health and 8 regulatory agencies and nongovernmental institutions. 9 Nominations for (1) listing a new substance, (2) reclassifying the listing status for a 10 substance already listed, or (3) removing a substance already listed in the RoC are 11 reviewed in a multi-step, scientific review process with multiple opportunities for public 12 comment. The scientific peer-review groups evaluate and make independent 13 recommendations for each nomination according to specific RoC listing criteria. [email protected] ABSTRACT Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) ecosystems exhibit high species diversity and are major contributors to the extraordinary levels of regional biodiversity and endemism found in the North American Coastal Plain Province. These forests require frequent fire return inter- vals (every 2–3 years) to maintain this rich diversity. In 2009, a floristic inventory was conducted at the Lake Thoreau Environmental Center owned by the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Center is located on 106 ha with approximately half cov- ered by a 100+ year old longleaf pine forest. When the 2009 survey was conducted, fire had been excluded for over 20 years resulting in a dense understory dominated by woody species throughout most of the forest. The 2009 survey recorded 282 vascular plant species. Prescribed fire was reintroduced in 2009 and reapplied again in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. A new survey was conducted in 2019 to assess the effects of prescribed fire on floristic diversity. The new survey found an additional 268 species bringing the total number of plants species to 550. This study highlights the changes in species diversity that occurs when fire is reintroduced into a previously fire-suppressed system and the need to monitor sensitive areas for changes in species composition.
