The Autobiography has therefore been re-cast and illustrated, in the hope and prayer that the Lord will use it to inspire the Boys and Girls of Christendom with a whole-hearted enthusiasm for the Conversion of the Heathen World to Jesus Christ. A few fresh incidents have been introduced ; the whole contents have been rearranged to suit a new class of readers ; and the service of a gifted Artist has been employed, to make the book every way attractive to the young. For full details as to the Missionary's work and life, the COMPLETE EDITION must still of course be referrcd to.

  • Chasing Sea Witch the Clipper Ship Had Its Heyday in the Mid
Chasing Sea Witch The clipper ship had its heyday in the mid-nineteenth century when it was profitable to move high-value cargo at a high rate of speed. The name really meant "speed" ship, as in moving "at a good clip." It is well known to sailors that the clippers were the fastest sailing ships of all time. So, why, asks Cynthia Parthemas, writing for Sites Alive, would our Rich duMoulin "want to leave comfortable Larchmont, for a 70-day trip from Hong Kong to New York, to break the speed record of Sea Witch, in a 53-foot two-man boat?" The first answer is that he is a product of Dartmouth, and this is what Dartmouth people do. But, the second answer lies with his passion for sailing, for adventure at sea, and for the opportunity to bring school kids across the country "along for the ride." But, it goes deeper than that - to the explorers who have always fascinated Rich duMoulin, including Columbus, Shackleton, and the astronauts. I, too, have had a similar fascination - and share his special admiration for Ernest Shackleton and the circumstances of his extraordinary and ill-fated 1914-17 Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition - and, against all odds, the elements of improbable success of his voyage. His purported recruitment advertisement said it all: "Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success." Historically accurate or not, his recruitment was over-subscribed. Despite having the Endurance crushed by ice, floating on ice floes, camping on Elephant Island in winter, sailing 800 miles for 16 days across the open sea in an un-seaworthy life boat, and then climbing across the forbidding peaks of South Georgia, Shackleton was able to return and bring all of his men home to safety.

In this dissertation I argue for an environmentally minded Atlantic history, one that is conscious of the ocean as both a cultural and a physical presence. The ocean shaped an early modern Atlantic vernacular that was at its essence maritime, godly, anxious and sociable. The ocean was a conduit to empire, so anything Britons imagined about the oceans, they imagined about their empire as well. Britons could never fully master their empire because they could never master the ocean; it was source of anxiety for even the wealthiest merchants. The fear of extremity – of wreck and ruin – kept those who crossed the ocean focused on the three most valuable Atlantic commodities: a sound reputation, accurate information, and the mercy of God.

The Archive of American Journalism Ray Stannard Baker Collection McClure’s Magazine September, 1898 How the News of the War is Reported WAR with Spain began, so far as the newspapers were concerned, when the “Maine” was blown up in Havana harbor. The explosion occurred at 9.40 o’clock on the evening of February 15, 1898. At half-past two on the following morning the first reports, filed by the correspondents in Havana, reached New York, and at daylight newsboys in every city in America were crying the extras which gave the details of the disaster. Before noon on the 16th, a tug steamed out of the harbor at Key West with three divers on board. In the few hurried hours after the news reached New York “The World” had telegraphed its representative in Key West, and divers had been roused out of bed, had collected their paraphernalia, and had embarked on the newly chartered tug for Havana. Early in the afternoon, “The World” correspondent in Havana received the following cabled instructions: “Have sent divers to you from Key West to get actual truth, whether favorable or unfavorable. First investigation by divers, with authentic results, worth $1,000 extra expense tomorrow alone.” But when the divers arrived, they were not allowed to make a descent, and all that the newspaper sponsors of the enterprise derived from the expedition was a bill of expense amounting to nearly $1,000. This was the beginning. During the next few days scores of correspondents were rushed into Havana, and half a hundred great newspapers began to fill with news and pictures of the wreck.

  • Mapping Topographies in the Anglo and German Narratives of Joseph Conrad, Anna Seghers, James Joyce, and Uwe Johnson
MAPPING TOPOGRAPHIES IN THE ANGLO AND GERMAN NARRATIVES OF JOSEPH CONRAD, ANNA SEGHERS, JAMES JOYCE, AND UWE JOHNSON DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kristy Rickards Boney, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by: Professor Helen Fehervary, Advisor Professor John Davidson Professor Jessica Prinz Advisor Graduate Program in Professor Alexander Stephan Germanic Languages and Literatures Copyright by Kristy Rickards Boney 2006 ABSTRACT While the “space” of modernism is traditionally associated with the metropolis, this approach leaves unaddressed a significant body of work that stresses non-urban settings. Rather than simply assuming these spaces to be the opposite of the modern city, my project rejects the empty term space and instead examines topographies, literally meaning the writing of place. Less an examination of passive settings, the study of topography in modernism explores the action of creating spaces—either real or fictional which intersect with a variety of cultural, social, historical, and often political reverberations. The combination of charged elements coalesce and form a strong visual, corporeal, and sensory-filled topography that becomes integral to understanding not only the text and its importance beyond literary studies. My study pairs four modernists—two writing in German and two in English: Joseph Conrad and Anna Seghers and James Joyce and Uwe Johnson. All writers, having experienced displacement through exile, used topographies in their narratives to illustrate not only their understanding of history and humanity, but they also wrote narratives which concerned a larger global ii community.
