Cooperative management is a model that involves Indigenous peoples in the planning and management of national parks without limiting the authority of the Minister under the Canada National Parks Act. What is the objective? To respect the rights and knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples by incorporating Indigenous history and cultures into management practices. How is it done? The creation of an incorporated Cooperative Management Board establishes a structure and process for Parks Canada and Indigenous peoples to regularly and meaningfully engage with each other as partners. 5 TORNGAT MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK CO-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT BOARD 6 BASECAMP 7 EVOLUTION OF BASE CAMP 8 VALUE OF A BASE CAMP 9 10 ACCOMPLISHMENTS An emerging destination Tourism was a foreign concept before the park. It is now a destination in its own right. Cruise ships and sailing vessels are also finding their way here. Reconciliation in action Parks Canada has been working with Inuit to develop visitor experiences that will connect people to the park as an Inuit homeland. All of these experiences involve the participation of Inuit and help tell the story to the rest of the world in a culturally appropriate way. -

DESGRANGES2 and J. NEGRO3 (Received 26 October 1994; accepted in revised form 8 December 1994) ABSTRACT. We report the observation of four gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) nests and several adults south of the previously recognized southern limit of the species’ breeding distribution in eastern North America. Our southernmost observation extends the known breeding range approximately 400 km to the south. The northern forest tundra biome could delineate the southern limit to the breeding range of the gyrfalcon. Key words: gyrfalcon, Falco rusticolus, nesting, distribution, Hudson Bay, Quebec. RÉSUMÉ. Nous rapportons la découverte de quatre nids de faucon gerfaut et la mention de quelques adultes au sud de la limite connue de l’aire de reproduction de l’espèce dans l’est de l’Amérique du Nord. Notre observation la plus méridionale étend l’aire de répartition quelques 400 km plus au sud. Les limites sud de la toundra forestière septentrionale pourraient coincider avec celle de l’aire de reproduction du faucon gerfaut. The gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) is a circumboreal breeder the eastern side of Hudson Bay from 1989 to 1992 (Fig. 1). which occurs in the arctic and subarctic regions of North Basins of the Great Whale, Little Whale and Nastapoka America and Eurasia (Brown and Amadon, 1968). In Canada Rivers, as well as some smaller catchments farther south and the species has been reported breeding sparsely north of 59˚ the Hudson Bay coast down to Long Island were covered, of latitude in the arctic tundra (Godfrey, 1986). -

The Glaciers of the Torngat Mountains of Northern Labrador By © Robert Way A Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Department of Geography Memorial University of Newfoundland September 2013 St. John 's Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract The glaciers of the Tomgat Mountains of northem Labrador are the southemmost m the eastern Canadian Arctic and the most eastem glaciers in continental North America. This thesis presents the first complete inventory of the glaciers of the Tomgat Mountains and also the first comprehensive change assessment for Tomgat glaciers over any time period. In total, 195 ice masses are mapped with 105 of these showing clear signs of active glacier flow. Analysis of glaciers and ice masses reveal strong influences of local topographic setting on their preservation at low elevations; often well below the regional glaciation level. Coastal proximity and latitude are found to exert the strongest control on the distribution of glaciers in the Tomgat Mountains. Historical glacier changes are investigated using paleomargins demarking fanner ice positions during the Little Ice Age. Glacier area for 165 Torngat glaciers at the Little Ice Age is mapped using prominent moraines identified in the forelands of most glaciers. Overall glacier change of 53% since the Little Ice Age is dete1mined by comparing fanner ice margins to 2005 ice margins across the entire Torngat Mountains. Field verification and dating of Little Ice Age ice positions uses lichenometry with Rhizocarpon section lichens as the target subgenus. The relative timing of Little Ice Age maximum extent is calculated using lichens measured on moraine surfaces in combination with a locally established lichen growth curve from direct measurements of lichen growth over a - 30 year period. -

In exposures, relict glacier ice and intrasedimental ice often coexist and look alike but their genesis is strikingly different. This paper aims to present a detailed description and infer the origin of a massive ice body preserved in the permafrost 15 of Bylot Island (Nunavut). The massive ice exposure and core samples were described according to the cryostratigraphic approach, combining the analysis of permafrost cryofacies and cryostructures, ice crystallography, stable O-H isotopes and cation contents. The ice was clear to whitish in appearance with large crystals (cm) and small gas inclusions (mm) at crystal intersections, similar to observations of englacial ice facies commonly found on contemporary glaciers and ice sheets. -

The Ice Age in the North American Arctic
THEICE AGE IN THENORTH AMERICAN ARCTIC Richard Foster Flint” Significance of glacialand interglacial ages RCTIC North America’, incommon with the rest of theworld, is now emerging from the latest of the series of glacial ages which, as a group, haveA characterized the last million years or more of geological time. During the glacial ages, each of which was a hundred thousand years or more in length, the mean temperatures at the earth’s surface were markedly lower than today. In consequence theproportion of snowfall to rainfall increased, melting diminished, and the accumulated snow formed glaciers. These great ice masses spread outward, slowly flowing under their own weight, until they covered one quarter to nearly one third of the land area of the world, principally of course in high and middle latitudes. In North America and Greenland alone, the area covered by ice amounted to seven million square miles. Between the cold glacial ages, warmer times intervened. The record of the soils formedin temperate latitudes during the warmer, interglacial ages shows that those ages were longer than the glacial ages-one of them probably lasted 300,000 years. The record of the fossil animals and plants entombed in the deposits of interglacial times establishes that one or more of those times was warmer than today; from this the inference follows that the interglacial ages probably witnessed a more extensive disappearance of ice fromthe arcticregions than is nowthe case. Infact for the world as a wholethe present is a time transitional from glacial to interglacial. The great ice sheets 1 that formerly blanketed much of North America and Eurasia have disappeared, but more than ten per cent of the world’s land area still remains covered by glacier ice. -
