Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells Nhs Trust Consultant Rheumatologist Job Description MAIDSTONE & TUNBRIDGE WELLS NHS TRUST CONSULTANT RHEUMATOLOGIST JOB DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION This is an appointment to the Specialty Medical Directorate which provides clinical services at both the Maidstone Hospital and the Tunbridge Wells Hospital. Job share applicants are welcome. The new consultant will have responsibilities for participating in and developing a Trust-wide service. This post has sessions at Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury. There may be out-reach clinics required locally. Supervision of registrars and nurse specialists is an important part of the job. Ward referrals at Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells hospital will be shared with Consultant colleagues. MAIDSTONE & TUNBRIDGE WELLS NHS TRUST The Trust was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the Mid Kent Healthcare Trust and the Kent & Sussex Weald NHS Trust. It provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 460,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. Its major hospitals are the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Maidstone Hospital. The Trust’s Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital. The Trust’s Chairman is Mr David Highton, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the Medical Director is Dr Peter Maskell. The Clinical Director for Specialist Medicine, which encompasses rheumatology, is Dr Paul Blaker. Laurence Maiden is the chief of medicine and the Lead for rheumatology is shared by Drs Keough, Waller and Szeto. MAIDSTONE HOSPITAL Maidstone Hospital is a 410 bed hospital situated at the western edge of Maidstone, two miles from junction 5 of the M20. It provides general hospital services to a catchment population of around 220,000. The Accident & Emergency Department has approximately 50,000 attendances per year. The hospital has a full range of diagnostic services, including multi-slice CT and MRI scanners. The Kent Cancer Centre is based at the Maidstone Hospital, with a second centre in Canterbury, also managed by the Trust. Acute medicine and elective in-patient surgery is provided on this site. This includes specialist upper GI, colorectal and gynae-oncology and urology. A state-of the-art laparoscopic theatre was completed in 2010 and enabled the development of the Postgraduate Centre into a world-class laparoscopic training centre. THE TUNBRIDGE WELLS HOSPITAL The Tunbridge Wells Hospital is located in Pembury adjacent to the A21. After a three year building programme, Tunbridge Wells now has a superb new hospital. Costing £230 million, the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury welcomed its first patients in January 2011 when the Women & Children's department transferred from the old Pembury Hospital. The second phase saw the transfer of Kent & Sussex Hospital at Mount Ephraim to the new location in September 2011. It is the first NHS hospital where all main wards are comprised entirely of single en suite bedrooms. These enable patients to have greater privacy, sleep and reduce the chances of infection. Most rooms have plenty of natural daylight and views over the surrounding forest which further aid a good recovery. Rheumatology Consultant Job Description Page 1 of 10 Author: Alex Keough, Rheumatology Lead MAP THE RHEUMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT The successful candidate will join the team of seven LTFTE Rheumatologists who currently provide local services across the Trust. The post-holder will undertake five out-patient clinic sessions in Rheumatology across the sites. The Rheumatology department runs dedicated early synovitis, biologic treatment, lupus and osteoporosis clinics. Currently c.1600 new referrals are seen in the clinics each year along with c. 7400 follow-up appointments. There is access to an ultrasound machine at both sites. Dual training in General Medicine and contributing to the medical on call rota would be welcome. A Rheumatological special interest is encouraged and would be an advantage. The successful candidate will ideally contribute to and collaborate in research and will be active in nurse and junior doctor education/development. Active participation in audit and clinical governance is expected. The department delivers a high-quality audited biologic program that has published outcomes and also an early synovitis clinic to which the candidate would be expected to contribute. The department has seven specialist nurses across both sites to help run the unit. They are managed by their own lead Rheumatology nurse. The department has two specialist registrars. Drug Monitoring We operate a shared care policy of drug monitoring with most of the GPs within our catchment area backed up by the RHEMOS automated software. Biologic Therapy We have ready access to biological therapy. We have a dedicated treatment room at Maidstone where relevant infusions are administered. There are almost 600 patients in the Rheumatology department on biologic treatments. Rheumatology Consultant Job Description Page 2 of 10 Author: Alex Keough, Rheumatology Lead Osteoporosis A part-time osteoporosis nurse attends the unit to provide an osteoporosis service for primary osteoporosis. Links also exist with the Falls service. There is a DEXA scanning machine at Pembury Hospital. Further developments are anticipated with progress of the National Service Frameworks and local health improvement plans. Acute Back Pain Service We have an extended scope physiotherapist who runs an acute back pain fast track service in close association with the Radiology department and our Chronic Pain Clinic run by Consultant Anaesthetists.     Maidstone Green Party Response to Maidstone Borough Council’s consultation on the Local Plan Review Preferred Approaches Firstly, we are deeply concerned about the timing and brevity of this consultation. It was launched to run from before the date of the end of the national lockdown for covid, i.e. 1st December 2020 however as the council is aware, Maidstone immediately entered Tier 3 with the tightest restriction. This is very likely to reduce knowledge of and access to the consultation and therefore the process is challengeable. Furthermore the consultation in being run in the three week run up to Christmas, a generally accepted poor time for consultation and a time that will further suppress engagement by the public. We are concerned that this poorly timed consultation will not reasonable standards of engagement, particularly from hard to reach groups, and is therefore flawed. With regard to the Local Plan Review Preferred Approaches (LPRPA) itself: Climate change and the ecological emergency Given that this is the largest emergency facing humanity and that the council has acknowledged this, it is surprising that the LPRPA does not frame itself around carbon / pollution reduction, resource reduction, and restoration / mitigation. Climate change is paid lip service to only and it is clear that the council has not understood the impacts or requirements. Policy SP15(C) Climate Change commences with the words “Adopt a strategy for growth” demonstrating the council’s fundamental lack of understanding about the connection between the environment and the economy. The building of an average home uses 100t CO2e. The LPRPA requires that 18,210 homes are built, this will require the emission of 1.8 million tonnes of CO2e which would not be in keeping with the council’s aim to be carbon neutral or that climate change is an emergency.

    Issue 10, Summer 2018 Kent Archives is set for a busy summer. In this edition of our newsletter we introduce you to our joint project with Findmypast to digitise our parish register collection. The image in our header is from the first Cranbrook parish composite register [ref. P100/1/A/1], and is just one of the thousands of registers that will be digitised. We are also in the middle of transferring the remaining historic records of the Diocese of Canterbury from Canterbury Cathedral Archives to the Kent History and Library Centre to join its probate records, which have been held by Kent Archives since 1946. At the same time, archive cataloguing of one of Maidstone’s major papermaking collections is nearly complete; further World War I commemorative activities are underway; and work continues on the Catalogue Transfer Project and Manorial Documents Register Project for Kent. Document in Detail: Diocese of Canterbury Medieval Fragments [DCb/PRC/50/5] Mark Ballard, Archive Service Officer Among many other records of great value within the records of Canterbury Diocese are the ‘medieval fragments’ [DCb/PRC/49 and DCb/PRC/50], which in the post-Reformation period came to be used as covers, or ‘end-parchments’, for the probate registers. If we can judge by the dates of the act books and wills and inventories registers they covered, this recycling became a habit during the episcopate of Archbishop Matthew Parker (1559-1575). It is perhaps ironic that at precisely the time that Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, probably both closet Roman Catholics, were still being employed to write motets for the Chapel Royal, such disrespectful treatment was being accorded at Canterbury to their medieval predecessors.

Other Rochester Charities are dealt with in the same Report (see pages 55-57, and 500-513). The Report also deals with various early legal cases concerning the Charity, and the uses to which its funds should be put, most notably the cases of the parishes of St. Margaret 's Rochester, and Strood, against the parishioners of St. Nicholas in 1680, and of the parishioners of Chatham against the Trustees of the Charity in 1808 (see L1-4B in this catalogue). The original will of Richard Watts, drawn up in 1579 and proved in the following year in the Consistory Court of Rochester, is kept in this Office under the catalogue mark, DRb PW12 (1579), with a registered copy in the volume of registered wills, DRb PWr 16 (ffl05-107). The department also benefits from an ECLO, two ophthalmology failsafe co-coordinators and a supportive senior management team within the Head and Neck Directorate. The post is based at The Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, with sessions also at the Medway Maritime Hospital. The Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is responsible for the provision of ophthalmology services for the people of Mid and West Kent. General and sub- speciality ophthalmology services are provided at the Eye, Ear, and Mouth Unit (EEMU), a modern, purpose- built facility attached to Maidstone Hospital, with outpatient facilities provided at the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, Medway Maritime Hospital and Sevenoaks Hospital in a “hub and spoke” model. The post- holder will have a timetable with sessions at Maidstone and other sites. EEMU has a busy Rapid Access department, optometric and orthoptic departments.
