Wednesday, September 11, 2013 • Special sectionBrooklyn of Brooklyn Daily Eagle Eagle/Brooklyn • September 11,Record 2013 • 30 eview and Comment RDo Americans Love Their Dogs Too Much? Every few years it seems there’s a new study that shows how smart dogs are. We’re familiar with guide dogs, but now some dogs have even been found to help patients better deal with epileptic seizures. And now comes undeniable evidence of just how intelligent dogs are: They have their own cable station. DOGTV is available on Direct TV. Not programming about dogs for dog owners (the majority of whom would rather be called “parents” than “own- ers”). No, this is programming for “stay-at-home” dogs. DOGTV’s website says its pooch-friendly programming is “scientifically developed to stimu- late and comfort your dog” when left alone. DOGTV says its content helps dogs overcome stress, separation anxiety, and other behavioral problems. As a sign of our evolutionary achievement, scientists point to how much leisure time we humans have. Dogs have obviously advanced far be- yond us. They’re born into a life of retirement while we spend most of our life working toward that goal. And they say the average dog’s IQ is only 10. And now we have to work a bit more to pay for DOGTV – $4.99 per month. Which will actually be a bargain compared to what we pay for pet massage, spa days, acupuncture, doggie day care, pet sitters, and birthday gifts. Yes, 77 percent of us pet parents admit to buying our dogs birthday gifts. I guess that makes sense if 81 percent of us think of our dogs as full- fledged family members. I have lived with dogs all my life, usually two at a time. I’m tempted sometimes to think of them as wayward children. But not tempted to treat them to birthday gifts, spa days, or gourmet meals. And as far as I can tell, they don’t seem to mind. They jump on me and lick my face every chance they get. But it seems many dogs fare better than their school-age family members when it comes to spending during tough economic times. According to the National Retail Federation, back-to-school spending is expected to drop by 8 percent this year as people cite general economic un- certainty. But spending on pets as a share of household spending kept pace during the recession, according to a 2013 report by the Labor Department. And that’s not just because people’s pets still had to eat. In fact, food consti- tutes only a third of Americans’ annual expenditure on pets. During the recession, spending on pets went up as a share of income while our charitable giving went down. And even though it has started to rise again, charitable giving is still a ways below its peak in 2007. That means there’s less money to help the most vulnerable Americans: those who have no homes, let alone their own cable channels. According to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, it would take just $20 billion to end homelessness. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development spends almost $2 billion right now to ad- dress homelessness. So America only needs $18 billion more. Could some of it come from us pet parents deciding that maybe George the dog doesn’t need that new sweater? Or canceling that spa doggie treatment? I’m not naïve enough to suggest that pet owners alone can end homeless- ness. But to the extent that we consider some of our spending on pets to be dis- cretionary, we can certainly find more money to give to charity. And I bet, if our dogs are as smart as we think they are, they would happily consider going with- out that jewel-studded collar – or new cable subscription – if it meant more people could sleep under a roof tonight. After all, what are best friends for? — Jim Sollisch, Christian Science Monitor Jim Sollisch is creative director at Marcus Thomas Advertising.
