As the title of this thesis indicates, this thesis relates to interpret or explain the spiritual and psychological warfare of abuse pertaining to trauma. This thesis will present an overview of all the different forms of abuse that is destroying the family unit as such. Chapter One will be a discussion on Abuse by making use of historical recordings as case studies to show that Abuse does not exist since the first official diagnosis in psychology of fifty years ago. Biblical case studies were exposed to show that sexual abuse existed since the beginning. This chapter further discuss statistics in South Africa according to police stations across the country. Chapter Two examined and defines cults across the world to expose them for abusing the Bible by calling themselves Christians. Cults share characteristics that could not be overlooked by this thesis and are discussed. Active cults were compiled in a xiii compendium that is under radar at this point in time. Reports of cult leader or member abusers are exposed. Chapter Three is an understanding of the mental state of the abused and the abuser. Both were psychologically clarified to give an explanation of the origin of the abusive behaviour and the psychological trauma the abuse inaugurates. Chapter Four expose the causes and consequences of abuse. This thesis discovered the consequences of Incest and the role it plays in the child’s adulthood. This chapter construed on children who murder their own parents. Abuse in all its forms were examined to discover the impact it has on the health of the abused. Chapter Five interpret the law protecting women in the case of domestic violence. This leads to the thought of investigating cyber bullying and sexting, and its legal implications for a child. Chapter Six investigated the evil supernaturalism of the enemy’s objective behind all forms of abuses. The image of God is under attack by the enemy, and this chapter interpret its motive. With the elderly population ever-growing, however, so too does the incidence of elder bullying. Bullying behaviors often occur in small group settings with members who interact regularly, such as in schools. Senior living communities also fit this description. Bullies in senior communities may engage in verbal and even physical abuse; in the worst cases, bullying can be fatal. Instances of bullying among older adults are likely to increase in frequency as this population grows. This Note evaluates current federal and state laws that bullying victims might use to seek redress. It argues that current state laws should be amended to include seniors by aligning laws with research-based definitions of bullying. This Note also recommends providing a private right of action and implementing research-based programming in communal living centers. I. This particular study is unique in its examination of bullying among elderly residents from independent and assisted living communities. This action-oriented study collected surveys from 98 residents of a Midwest senior residential community to determine levels, location, and responses to bullying by residents as well as to inform administration of appropriate responses. Results indicated that approximately one in four residents responded that they had seen or heard another resident being bullied at some point. Residents also reported their experiences with social, physical, verbal, and electronic bullying within the past six months.

    Visual Theologies in Graham Greene’s ‘Dark and Magical Heart of Faith’ by Dorcas Wangui MA (Lancaster) BA (Lancaster) Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2017 Wangui 1 Abstract Visual Theologies in Graham Greene’s ‘Dark and Magical Heart of Faith’ This study explores the ways in which Catholic images, statues, and icons haunt the fictional, spiritual wasteland of Greene’s writing, nicknamed ‘Greeneland’. It is also prompted by a real space, discovered by Greene during his 1938 trip to Mexico, which was subsequently fictionalised in The Power and the Glory (1940), and which he described as ‘a short cut to the dark and magical heart of faith’. This is a space in which modern notions of disenchantment meets a primal need for magic – or the miraculous – and where the presentation of concepts like ‘salvation’ are defamiliarised as savage processes that test humanity. This brutal nature of faith is reflected in the pagan aesthetics of Greeneland which focus on the macabre and heretical images of Christianity and how for Greene, these images magically transform the darkness of doubt into desperate redemption. As an amateur spy, playwright and screen writer Greene’s visual imagination was a strength to his work and this study will focus on how the visuality of Greene’s faith remains in dialogue with debates concerning the ‘liquidation of religion’ in society, as presented by Graham Ward. The thesis places Greene’s work in dialogue with other Catholic novelists and filmmakers, particularly in relation to their own visual-religious aesthetics, such as Martin Scorsese and David Lodge.

Stark* ABSTRACT This paper develops a notion of manipulative gaslighting, which is designed to capture something not captured by epistemic gaslighting, namely the intent to undermine women by denying their testimony about harms done to them by men. Manipulative gaslighting, I propose, consists in getting someone to doubt her testimony by challeng- ing its credibility using two tactics: “sidestepping” (dodging evidence that supports her testimony) and “displacing” (attributing to her cognitive or characterological defects). I explain how manipulative gaslighting is distinct from (mere) reasonable disagree- ment, with which it is sometimes confused. I also argue for three further claims: that manipulative gaslighting is a method of enacting misogyny, that it is often a collective phenomenon, and, as collective, qualifies as a mode of psychological oppression. The term “gaslighting” has recently entered the philosophical lexicon. The literature on gaslighting has two strands. In one, gaslighting is characterized as a form of testi- monial injustice. As such, it is a distinctively epistemic injustice that wrongs persons primarily as knowers.1 Gaslighting occurs when someone denies, on the basis of another’s social identity, her testimony about a harm or wrong done to her.2 In the other strand, gaslighting is described as a form of wrongful manipulation and, indeed, a form of emotional abuse. This use follows the use of “gaslighting” in therapeutic practice.3 On this account, the aim of gaslighting is to get another to see her own plausible perceptions, beliefs, or memories as groundless.4 In what follows, I develop a notion of manipulative gaslighting, which I believe is necessary to capture a social phenomenon not accounted for by epistemic gaslight- ing.

RAJA RAO’S “CROCODILE TEARS” ROHIT K DASGUPTA Established academic debates surrounding representation of queer identities in India have time and again illuminated the relationship between sexual (and gendered) subjectivities and the state. More often than not queer individuals themselves have fixated on heteronormativising their queerness. For many, such articulations of “fitting in” with the rest evidence a social/cultural and even political progress, but for radical queer activists and scholars this signifies a backward trend of servicing the neo- liberal agenda. Lisa Duggan (2002, 179) has called this homonormativity and has argued that it is “a politics that does not contest dominant heteronormative assumptions and institutions but upholds and sustains them while promising the possibility of a demobilized gay constituency and a privatized, depoliticized gay culture anchored in domesticity and consumption”. This essay therefore is a mediation of and an argument against this neo-liberal progress which assumes a universal queer identity (see Massad 2007 and Altman 1997) structured around normative family structures (through same sex marriages and adoption) and a de-essentialising of the queer body through hyper masculinity/femininity (Dasgupta and Gokulsing 2014). As recent research has suggested,there are newer ways to understand queerness beyond the state sponsored homonormativities (Puar 2006). Scholar and activist Judith Halberstam’s recent work on Gaga feminism (2012) sifts through popular cultural artefacts to uncover how these media artefacts contain within them a blueprint of dominant (heteronormative/mainstream) culture with its emphasis on stasis, norms and conventions.

In all other aspects of modern policing, from traffic enforcement to homicide investigation, policing technique relies heavily upon the recognition and identification of an agent as an officer of the law. Though coming under question in recent years, it has long been professed that highly visible police have a deterrent effect on crime simply by their presence. Simply stated, the belief is that a criminal intent on breaking the law will likely refrain from doing so should he or she encounter, or have a high likelihood of encountering, a uniformed police officer just moments prior to the intended crime. Such presence certainly has its benefits in a civilized society. If to no other end, the calming and peace of mind that highly visible and accessible officers provide the citizenry is invaluable. The real dilemma arises when attempting to justify and fund this police presence that crime ridden neighborhoods and communities continually demand. Particularly when the crime suppression benefits of such tactics are questionable and impossible to measure. After all, how do you quantify the number of crimes that were never committed and, if you could, how do you correlate that to simple police presence? In polar opposition to the highly visible, readily accessible, uniformed officer, we find the undercover officer.
