Entrepreneurial Solutions to Online Disinformation: Seeking Scale, Trying for Profit ENTREPRENEURSHIP & POLICY WORKING PAPER SERIES Entrepreneurial Solutions to Online Disinformation: Seeking Scale, Trying for Profit Anya Schiffrin In 2016, the Nasdaq Educational Foundation awarded the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) a multi-year grant to support initiatives at the intersection of digital entrepreneurship and public policy. Over the past three years, SIPA has undertaken new research, introduced new pedagogy, launched student venture competitions, and convened policy forums that have engaged scholars across Columbia University as well as entrepreneurs and leaders from both the public and private sectors. New research has covered three broad areas: Cities & Innovation; Digital Innovation & Entrepreneurial Solutions; and Emerging Global Digital Policy. Specific topics have included global education technology; cryptocurrencies and the new technologies of money; the urban innovation environment, with a focus on New York City; government measures to support the digital economy in Brazil, Shenzhen, China, and India; and entrepreneurship focused on addressing misinformation.     Is Might Right? Boko Haram, the Joint Military Task Force, and the Global Jihad Daniel E. Agbiboa In this paper, I critically examine the ongoing religious terrorism of Boko Haram in northern Nigeria, focusing on why the group exists and its growing connection to the global jihad. I evaluate the coercive and conciliatory responses of the Nigerian government to Boko Haram, with particular reference to the Joint Military Task Force. Problematizing a security-only, killing approach to dealing with religious terrorism, I argue that countries !ghting terror abroad should learn from the Nigerian experience of !ghting Boko Haram that the war on terror begets a vicious cycle of terror and war without end. In this article, I describe communication phenomena pertaining to the war and occupation years (1939–1945), which occurred in the parts of Poland occupied by the Third Reich, called in the official nomenclature the General Governorship.1 In this paper, I do not focus as much on the description of the semantics or pragmatics of the propa- ganda language used by the Nazi authorities toward the inhabitants of the occu- pied country, but rather I try to answer the question of how a collective encounter with the brutal practice of the totalitarian power (with its war and totalitarian discourse), and in fact, in the means of mass communication subordinated to it, was reflected in the common discourse (“non-totalitarian”). Thus, I describe the narrative about the methods and means of hegemonic communication used by the Nazi authorities (texts and forms) (cf. Garlicki, Noga- -Bogomilski 2004; Fras 2006; Kamińska-Szmaj 2013), which became established in the “anti-totalitarian” discourse. Trafficking in persons affects virtually every country in the world. The largest number of victims are believed to come from Asia. The former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe are now believed to be the largest new source of trafficking for prostitution and the sex industry in Europe and North America. Thousands more are trafficked from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Most of the victims are sent to Asia, the Middle East, Western Europe and North America. INTRODUCTION The advent of the Internet has dramatically and irreversibly changed the way in which members of society interact, producing both positive and negative effects.' One of the more pernicious effects of the Internet is that it has given rise to a readily accessible, inexpensive, and ubiquitous source of pornogra- phy.2 One of the most dangerous, and certainly more alarming effects of this explosion in Internet access,3 is the availability and dissemination of child por- nography.4 This comment will analyze the current state of national and interna- I J.D.
