MONTHLY ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULE- FEBRUARY 2016

ENTERTAINMENT PROVIDED BY: A Letter From On The Beat Music Agency:

I am originally from the Hudson Valley in Upstate New York and growing up there, Valen- tines day was always thought of as a cold and snowy holiday. Valentines day gifts often included something skiing or snowboarding related. Here in Santa Monica we’re more likely to spend the afternoon strolling along the beach and watching the sunset after a perfect seventy-four degree day. Nonetheless, we musicians tend to make the most out of the extra romanticism the month of February offers. I’m particularly excited to hear the performances of Emma-Jane Thommen, Jesse Palter, and Eva & David who join us for the very first time during the week of Valentines Day.

This month, in the “On The Record” section, we’ll take a little time to get to know singer-song- writer Lola Delon. Lola is originally from Paris, France and comes to LA by way of Rio De Janeiro and NYC. I first met Lola in Brooklyn in 1999 and she is one of the most well traveled, well read, intelligent, and musically informed people I know. A great deal of what I know about modern soul music I learned from recommendations given to me by Lola. In our conversation I think you’ll see that she is a true talent and student of the music. Lola has written songs for American Idol contestants, has a very considerable career as a pop artists in France, and currently has a single out in Korea.

In the past several months our “on The Record” interviews have featured artists who are originally from the UK, Rome, and Paris. Each of these artists have substantial careers in their home country and just by vir- tue of being here in LA, we get the unique opportunity to enjoy them in the intimate lobby lounge of Ho- tel Casa Del Mar. This is just one small example of the depth of talent Los Angeles has to offer and one of the many exclusive experiences that comes along with spending time with us here at Hotel Casa Del Mar.

As always, if you enjoy some of our performing artists, please take a moment to mention it to the artists, or better yet, tag @HotelCasaDelMar in your social media posts and tell the world to come join you for a song and a drink!

Cheers,

12 On theWITH Record

Each month in this section, we feature a different one of our On The Beat artists for an informal interview. This month we’d like to introduce you to a wonderful singer-songwriter from Paris, France: Lola Delon.

On The Beat (OTB): I know you as a multi-talented person, you sing, act, write, obsessed with hip hop and one of the reasons, aside from the rhyming, was and produce. How do you introduce yourself and describe who you are/what that it opened me up through the use of samples to a lot more music, like you do at a cocktail party? the whole P funk catalog which has been extensively sourced in east coast Lola Delon (LD): ): I’m a musician and songwriter. My first instrument is my and west coast hip hop alike. When voice, my second insrument is keys. I’ve written songs for American Idol I moved to NY after high school, I alumni and have a single out in Korea right now. landed in a very vibrant scene of young Jazz musicians and got to delve OTB: That was amazingly concise! Which came first for you, singing or writing deeper into my study of music. I fell music? in love with the standards and Mingus and Duke and Miles, Adderley and LD: Thanks! That was my intention for this interview because I’ve been known pretty much just listen to that for a to wax poetic wich is not always what’s required , unfortunately. Singing was stretch. Later, I met Toby Gad ( who first. As a vocalist I get compared to Joss Stone and Janis Joplin a lot but I wrote hits, for Beyonce, Fergie, John like to think I could be the love child of Aretha Franklin and Mick Jagger. But Legend, etc…) who took me under his actually because I started singing at 4 I was making up a lot of songs then so wing and introduced me to the ropes could be that singing and songwriting came hand in hand. of pop songwriting

OTB: Aretha, Mick, Janis, and Joss, are all so rooted in soul music, and I OTB: Where did you move to NY from? personally know how deep your knowledge of soul music is. Where and how did that start for you? LD: I was born in Paris and lived most of my life there , with a three years LD: One of the great lucks of my life is having been born in a family of music sojourn in Rio de Janeiro, before lovers. My father and step father both were delta blues aficionados and vinyl coming to the States collectors and I inherited that music nerd gene. They were also deep into classic rock and the beatles, stones, bob marley, my mother loved opera OTB: Did you move to New York straight out of high school? Did you move so I got to cast a wide net as far as musical interests. As a teen I became there just by yourself?

13 beings we stand on the shoulders of all our ancestors and that knowledge is LD: Yes, right after high school and I moved with my two best friends and we there for us, now more than ever with the internet. I am so grateful that I get to met another friend from Paris there. We all lived together in a Real World type mine that experience and expertise. And all you need is a library card! . Art is of setting. Lots of estrogen. so vital to our species, from the Lascaux grotto where the first drawings made by man were found to movies, we need to have our stories reflected back to us to assimilate them and know ourselves. To think that I may contribute to that tradition however modestly makes embracing a musician’s life all worthwhile. “I hope to inspire people to more self-acceptance that they are lovable and worthy in all their human OTB: It sounds like from very early on you were quite studious about the music imperfections and messiness” and records you were listening to, were you on that path by yourself based on your own curiosity or is it something that family, teachers, or friends were into - Lola as well?

LD: I think it was probably an innate love of music combined with a propitious access to music. Music was not just appreciated but worshipped in my household. I was left to my own devices when it came to learning about it but I had a vast vinyl collection at my finger tips and I clearly remember reading the credits. I loved Otis Redding and love to look at the line ups of his recording and then discover the same guys on another Stax record and being able to make those connections and recognize players’ individual styles was very rewarding for me.

OTB: What’s next for you as a performing/recording artist? What are you working on these days?

LD: Aside from the songwriting I do for others, I am beginning work on another album. This time I have decided to do the songwriting part on my own and then get help producing it. I feel I’m at the point where I can finally stop hiding behind technique in favor of true artistic expression. Scary and exciting. And more shows this year. I’ve converted my garage and converted it into a recording studio. That’s been very exciting.

OTB: So, we know how you describe yourself at a cocktail party, what do you hope people take away in terms of who you are from one of your performances where they haven’t had the opportunity to speak to you?

LD: I hope to inspire people to more self acceptance, that they are lovable and worthy in all their human imperfections and messiness. Because when we OTB: So something the reader should know is that we actually met in NYC love ourselves, we can extend that to others and not feel threatened by their in 1999. Since then I’ve always considered you to be one of the most well differences. read and intellectually informed people I know. Where did that part of your personallity come from and how do you feel it informs you as a songwriter?

LD: Well, my mom was a teacher and education was definitely one of the chief values I grew up with. I loved reading. Still do. As musicians and human 14 PREPARED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CASA DEL MAR BY:
