Debating News………….…………….

Debating The College debating teams continue to do well in the Wellington Speaking Union’s Intercollegiate competitions. Our Junior Certificate teams, in particular, are doing very well in their grade, with Mrs Ryan’s team (Elisha Prasad, Merhawit Gebremikal and Shaynell Barboza) winning all four of their debates so far. Ms Walsh’s team (Jasmine Arora, Raisham Dahya and Zakiya Nowicki-McCulloch) and Ms MacIver’s team (Tabatha Billington, Clare Lewis, Chaveaunielle Aizpuru, Amy Campbell and Terena Federico) have won three out of four debates.

Recently, eight girls took part in the annual Impromptu Cup competition, held on Saturday, 9th June. The girls debated in two-person teams, with all the teams taking part in four debates, for which they had five minutes preparation (for seniors) and ten minutes for juniors. Amy Campbell and Terena Federico enjoyed the most success, winning three out of four debates. Grace Jansen and Julie Vidal won two out of four, with a narrow loss to the eventual winners, Wellington College. Julia Ryan and Ella Jansen also won two out of four debates, competing against a number of Senior Premier A debaters. The final junior team was Zakiya Nowicki-McCulloch and Elisha

Trip to Samoa 2013 As a result of a very successful trip to Samoa in July 2011, we are planning to again take a group in July 2013. This trip will be to collect data for two Level 3 standards in Geography.

The trip will go in the first week of the July school holidays (end of Term 2). We intend to do this trip only every two years as there is a lot of organisation involved. Because of this, I am offering to take the students who will be doing Year 12 Geography in 2013 as well as those doing Year 13 Geography. They must have met the requirements for that subject by passing at least 12 credits in 2012 with The Go Wellington bus was our mobile dressing room some being from an external Geography examination. The course was over rolling terrain with a couple of steep inclines. It was soft and the ground was heavy-going in some of the really muddy sections.

In the junior girls, Josie was outstanding. She got out to a fast start with the leading bunch of six runners. By the mid-point of the 3km race she was leading. She held off all challenges and took out 1 st place in a field of 150 runners from all over NZ. An awesome effort as she ran over a minute faster than at the Wellington champs.

Having been injured a week before last year’s cross country, Jean could not defend her Junior girls title in

2011. It was her first year in the senior grade this year Ten senior students attended a morning with Buddle and she performed admirably. She was in a bunch of four Finlay .
