    Yael Dayan speaks (45 years after 6 Day War) Yael Dayan Moshe Dayan’s multi-talented daughter, Yael–the author of seven books (including five novels), editor of one, former Labor Member of Knesset for over ten years, a one-time deputy mayor of Tel Aviv and currently chair of the city council of Tel Aviv (the latter two as a member of Meretz)–appeared in Manhattan on June 3rd, at an event organized by B’Tselem USA, the US office of the Israeli NGO working for human rights in the occupied territories, and co-sponsored by Partners and Americans for Peace Now. I remember Uri Zaki, B’Tselem USA’s director, from his days as head of the youth section of Israel’s Meretz party. Prior to listening to the great singer/activist David Broza perform and Ms. Dayan speak, I was approached by a young publicist on whether I’d write about the event. She mentioned coverage in connection with “the anniversary,” but I had to be reminded that June 5th marked 45 years since the beginning of the Six Day War; she referred to it as the beginning of “the occupation.” I don’t disagree, but while I look upon the resulting occupation as a great misfortune for both Palestinians and Israelis, I know that the military victory was absolutely necessary (a subject I will return to shortly).     Israeli Petition on EU Labeling of Settlement Products by "Indication of Origin" Contributes Significantly to the Future of Israel and to Peace We, Israelis who care deeply about the future of our country, now more than ever, welcome the European Union’s decision to label products from Israeli settlements with correct indication of origin, and hope that other countries will follow suit. The international community distinguishing between Israel and the settlements is a step that could help promote a peace agreement, and it will also strengthen Israel’s overall status in the world and will undermine attempts to delegitimize Israel. This kind of distinction can also serve to reduce the current levels of tension, fear and despair, among both Israelis and Palestinians. This is an important first step. We call upon the EU and other world governments to take further steps in this direction, in order to differentiate between Israel within the 1967 borders and the occupied territories. Millions of Israelis and Palestinians may now hope for a better future if the International community continues to be involved, helping both sides to achieve a fair two-state solution, which will make possible the existence of both nations, the Israeli and the Palestinian, side by side, in peace and security. Furthermore, it will elaborate on the promotion of particular performances and conceptions of Jewish as well as national (Israeli) constructions of identity. In addition, I will define the scope of “the other” in Yael Dayan’s prose: firstly, the construction of “one people” will be analysed, secondly I will investigate the construction of a woman within the Jewish Community, and thirdly the construction of a non-Jew will be highlighted. As these issues will not be investigated separately, I will focus on interdependencies and mutual conditions instead. This is to say that I will try to explain the kinds of narratives that the texts serve in relation to dealing with “one people” as well as the impact of gendered fixations and break downs in the literary representation of constructions of nation, nationality and nationhood in Yael Dayan’s work. The method of Close Reading will be employed for the analytical part of this piece of writing, in the course of which I will discern “hidden” or subversive elements, which are only marginally treated by critics and the scientific community. I argue that it was the ambiguous play between Greek music’s discursive value (its “image”) and the semiotic potential of its sound and music-adjacent practices, that allowed for its double-reception by Euro-Israeli elites and Working-class immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries (Mizrahim).     Yael Dayan Speaks Out Moshe Dayan’s daughter, Yael, is now older than her father was when he died at the age of 66 in 1981. This is not to say that she’s old, but that she’s mature and accomplished. She has authored over a dozen books, including half a dozen novels, but has focused most of her energy since 1992 on politics. She served as a Labor party Member of Knesset for three terms before losing favor with that party, along with Yossi Beilin in 2003, for being too dovish, and moved with him to Meretz. She led the Meretz electoral slate for the Tel Aviv city council to a plurality of the votes and as a result, became Tel Aviv’s deputy mayor in charge of its social welfare portfolio. She has since visited Meretz USA in New York on a variety of occasions, after or before heading west for urban affairs conferences and speaking engagements. We hosted her again two days ago at a public forum in New York and met with her privately last night at the monthly meeting of the Meretz USA executive committee. These appearances have helped us understand the mess that Israel finds itself in today, following the summer war with Hezbollah. Ms. Dayan publically opposed Israel’s war weeks prior to the point that Meretz officially opposed it. Meretz as a party raised questions, abstained from votes of no confidence and called for negotiations and an expanded peace process, but actually opposed military operations only during the ground offensive in the closing days of the war.
