73 CULL COWS 10.00am Auctioneer Simon Lamb 07815188125 Topping at 172p or £1369 For a bank holiday weekend, and all the talk of buyers unable to attend, trade today was without doubt the dearest it’s been for months. New faces were in attendance making for a lively atmosphere and real competition. It would be fair to say that the quality was slightly better than that of last week, but whatever the grade of cattle, every commodity was on fire. With averages of over £730 per life for all stock sold, I’d challenge you to beat the live weight system that we are currently experiencing. Demand continues to completely outstrip supply, can you afford not to sell your cattle on their feet at Beeston, only the live weight system, through a ring, can offer you the competition needed to market your culls to their highest value, and Beeston certainly offers you that. Please don’t forget to inform ourselves if your cattle are tested, with a real premium for feeding types, and a bag full of buyers to match. At Beeston we cater for all models, shapes, sizes and nationalities! 73 head entered (65 dairies) Black & White cows to 147ppk or £1098, averaging 119.44ppk and over £730.43 per life! Continental cows to 172ppk or £1369 Half of entry over 125ppk Please don’t hesitate to call Simon Lamb on 07815 188125. Today’s market average (mostly black and white), coming in at 121.50ppk or £741.47 per head. (Everything in, including the lean, mean, lame and loopy!) Black and white cows traded throughout the day at 125p to 150p for meated cows(135p to 160p younger models), 110p to 120p for steakers, 100p to 110p for stronger plain cows and 80p to 105p there after!

Luckily, today proved to be a ‘hit’ affair, with all buyers seemingly keen to ensure supplies for after the Easter weekend. A bit of market intelligence and a few phone calls ensured both buyers and sellers were happy!

82 New Season Lambs Overall Average 264.1p/kg Top Spot 294.0 p/kg-35 kg Texel Crosses, C Fox, Barthomley (and peaking at £122.06 per head for 41.8 kg Charollais Crosses from R and E L Blockley, ) As expected, a much smaller entry than last week’s Easter Show, combined with the usual nervousness about demand so close to the Easter weekend. Several buyers had orders to fill, however, and got stuck in to all the New lambs, with the Fox girls at 294p just pipping the Blockley’s to Top Spot this week. Plenty of quality Lambs over 260p, and although not hitting the great heights seen 12 months ago, all producers seem happy with the way the New season has kicked off at Beeston so far. 275 WEANLINGS Auctioneer: Simon Lamb 07815 188125 Steers to £690, Heifers to £655, Bulls to £610. Another bumper entry of just shy of 300 head passed through the ring in record time for Beeston’s first mid monthly sale of catalogued weanlings, making it over 500 sold in April already. A ringside packed to the gunnels once again, with over 40 different purchasers being recorded on the day. Trade was relentless from start to finish, with all the doubters over the lack of rain and the quantity of cattle in the market on one day proved wrong, as trade was without doubt dearer on the month. The sale topped at £690 for a suckler bred 6mo British Blue steer from B L Griffiths, Newtown. £670 was paid on three occations, firstly for Davenport Farming Ltd, who showed a superb group of 70 dairy bred steers and heifers on the day, with their best a 6mo British Blue. Reynold Roberts, Pen-Y-Cae sold Limousin’s to the same price twice with both just 7mo suckler types, with the best of his heifers selling to £655 for similar aged cattle. Native bred cattle dominated the shed, with the best Hereford steers selling for £610 from Messrs Davenport, Hereford heifers sold to £610 from EA & A Jones, with Angus steers selling to £610 for R Roberts. Thanks to all vendors for their continued support and purchasers for making both sale’s a great success.
