Contact: [email protected] Journal of Jazz Studies vol. 11, no. 2, pp. 29-77 (2016) Flamenco Jazz: An Analytical Study Peter Manuel Since the 1990s, the hybrid genre of flamenco jazz has emerged as a dynamic and original entity in the realm of jazz, Spanish music, and the world music scene as a whole. Building on inherent compatibilities between jazz and flamenco, a generation of versatile Spanish musicians has synthesized the two genres in a wide variety of forms, creating in the process a coherent new idiom that can be regarded as a sort of mainstream flamenco jazz style. A few of these performers, such as pianist Chano Domínguez and wind player Jorge Pardo, have achieved international acclaim and become luminaries on the Euro-jazz scene. Indeed, flamenco jazz has become something of a minor bandwagon in some circles, with that label often being adopted, with or without rigor, as a commercial rubric to promote various sorts of productions (while conversely, some of the genre’s top performers are indifferent to the label 1). Meanwhile, however, as increasing numbers of gifted performers enter the field and cultivate genuine and substantial syntheses of flamenco and jazz, the new genre has come to merit scholarly attention for its inherent vitality, richness, and significance in the broader jazz world.

The keyboardist, composer and bandleader is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, as well as the fourth- most nominated artist in Grammy Awards history with 63 nods – and 22 wins, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career since playing with the genre-shattering bands of Miles Davis in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Yet Chick has never been more productive than in the 21st century, whether playing acoustic piano or electric keyboards, leading multiple bands, performing solo or collaborating with a who’s who of music. Underscoring this, he has been named Artist of the Year twice this decade in the DownBeat Readers Poll. Born in 1941 in Massachusetts, Chick remains a tireless creative spirit, continually reinventing himself through his art. At first glance these are two worlds that have nothing to do with each other. At a closer look there emerge numerous striking parallels. Jazz is considered by many to be the music of the 20th century. Although it has seldom been a music for the masses, it has contributed to and had a lasting influence on virtually every form of popular music. Flamenco has had a similar influence on Iberian music. They say that the cradle of jazz lies in the hot and humid climate of the Mississippi Delta, in the mystery-shrouded city of New Orleans. When you separate jazz's various forms, you find rhythms and melodies from Africa and the Caribbean, Old World harmonies, even syncopation from the Scottish Highlands. Flamenco is one of the oldest known forms of folk music in Europe. Within it are a mixture of old Iberian, Jewish, Moorish, Arabic, Byzantine and last, even Indian colors; the Gypsies or Gitanos, as they are called in Spain, acknowledge their origins to be within the enormous Asiatic realm. They came to Spain in the 15th century where they had a lasting influence on the culture, although they remained a hunted and oppressed minority. In its present form flamenco is approximately 100 years old, as is jazz. Their emotional similarities are easy to detect: neither music functions without passion, without inner fire.

    CHICK COREA: AN EXPLORATION OF HIS SPANISH HEART by Eric Myers _____________________________________________________________ The Chick Corea Concert Peter Stuyvesant International Music Festival Regent Theatre, Sydney Sydney Morning Herald, February 27, 1982 ______________________________________________________________ losing the Peter Stuyvesant International Music Festival on a high note on Wednesday, the 40-year-old American Chick Corea gave the C audience a generous serving of his rich Latin-oriented compositions. Featuring, along with Corea, Steve Kujala (flute and saxophones), Carlos Benavent (electric bass), Tom Brecktlein (drums) and Don Alias (percussion), the evening was an extended exploration of Corea's LP My Spanish Heart - just one aspect of this extraordinary musician's many-faceted talents. Corea (left), pictured here with his saxophonist/flautist Steve Kujala… The compositions ranged widely through Corea's now enormous repertoire, including selections from an LP yet to be released, plus old favourites like Night Streets, from the LP Spanish Heart, and Dear Alice, from his LP The Mad 1 Hatter. Generally, the music featured dense and rhythmically complex Latin feels, with long and powerful solos floating over the top, provided chiefly by Corea himself and Kujala, who predominantly used flute. Apart from high energy Latin-jazz-rock music, there were pleasurable contrasts. In the first show, Corea did solo versions on the acoustic piano of Thelonious Monk's Trinkle Tinkle and Round Midnight. In Corea's own words - "a tribute to a great classical composer in jazz" - this was a stunning exercise in impressionistic solo piano and a touching gesture so soon after Monk's untimely death about a week ago on February 17, 1982.

Ho appena avuto la tragica notizia. Dopo una breve malattia che lo aveva costretto ad abbandonare le scene se n'è andato tre giorni fa (ma la notizia è stata data soltanto stanotte) uno dei pianisti jazz e non solo più importante della storia della musica . Non solo jazz nelle sue dita, ma anche fusion e musica classica, in particolare Scarlatti e Maurice Ravel, che ne hanno chiaramente influenzato il gusto e il fraseggio. È impossibile in poche righe ripercorrere la carriera di un gigante della musica come Chick Corea nato nel 1941 a Chelsea e cresciuto a pane e musica. Importantissimi i suoi incontri, primo tra tutti quello con il trombettista Woody Shaw col quale, nel 1966, firma il primo disco da leader, “Tones For Joan's Bones”. La collaborazione che gli cambia la vita è quella iniziata verso la fine degli anni sessanta con Miles Davis, col quale firma dischi importanti e due pietre miliari come “In a silent way” del 1969 e “Bitches brew” dell’anno successivo. Nel 1971 fonda il gruppo sperimentale di jazz-fusion "Return to forever" (indimenticabile l’omonimo disco di esordio del 1972 con il flauto e la voce suadente della grande Flora Purim e la copertina, magnifica, che ritrae un uccello che plana sull’acqua del mare).
