FROM CHANEL TO REVES: LA PAUSA AND ITS COLLECTIONS AT THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART D Giles Ltd, United Kingdom, 2016. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 211 x 175 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. Wendy and Emery Reves purchased the Villa La Pausa in 1953 from the fashion icon Gabrielle Coco Chanel, and retained the majority of furnishings, souvenirs, and books owned by the acclaimed fashion designer. The Mediterranean villa was originally built in 1927 by architect Robert Streitz under the direction of Chanel. Throughout her time at La Pausa, she decorated and remodelled the home with austere style, including 16th- and 17th-century furniture from the Duke of Westminster s collection. Along with the furnishings, new owners Wendy and Emery Reves acquired Chanel s personal library, which included numerous novels by contemporary writers of the time and some first editions by her friends, among them Jean Cocteau. The Reves continued to fill their home with their private art collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern works (including Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Edouard Manet, Honore Daumier, Auguste Rodin). In 1983 the whole collection was donated to Dallas Museum of Art. This is a fascinating insight into both a remarkable art collection and a remarkable house - Winston Churchill was a frequent guest aer the Second World War. Moreover La Pausa has just been acquired by the House of Chanel, with plans to restore it to its original decor and spirit. 2020/2021 1 Foreword When I started this piece in early March, the number of confirmed Coronavirus infections worldwide had just passed 100,000. Today, as some museums in the UK re-open, the number of confirmed cases worldwide is nearly 11 million, with over half a million deaths across 188 countries. Early March seems like a distant world, with countless lives now ended prematurely, and many families, households, and businesses facing an uncertain future. Phrases like “the new normal”, “socially-distanced”, “Zooming”, “online learning”, “shielding” and “household bubbling” have all now entered our lingua franca. We’ve also learned more about the effects of this terrible disease, how it seems to affect certain communities and age groups more than others, and how it may have existed undetected for many weeks, even months, before the first recorded cases emerged in January. This much still seems certain: the number of reported infections will rise, and it’s likely that all of us will have to keep on changing the way we live: in travel, work, shopping, education and business. The publishing world has seen the shuttering of bookstores, a decline in books sales, short-notice movements in production from the Far East to Europe and back again, and the cancellation of the Bologna, London and Paris book fairs. While Frankfurt Book Fair is officially set to happen in October, it’s unclear how many of us will physically visit it. But we can, and must, build some collective head-space away from Head Office and General Enquiries the seeming unstoppable narrative of anxiety-inducing events, and look D Giles Limited 66 High Street forward to a better place, where difficult truths are confronted, discussed Lewes and debated, and resolved.

FEB.SUP_ma.nov.coop/plaz.pp.corr 16/01/2013 12:48 Page 141 Recent acquisitions (2005–12) at the Dallas Museum of Art THIS SUPPLEMENT PRESENTS some of the most important objects acquired by the Dallas Museum of Art during the last seven years. Twenty-two objects have been selected from more than fifteen hundred to highlight the quality and diversity of the Museum’s collection. Founded in 1903, and since 1984 an anchor of the down- town Dallas Arts District, the Dallas Museum of Art is housed in a modernist building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. From its beginnings, the Museum acquired American art, with a strong accent on South-western artists, and has slowly evolved into a museum of world art through the generous donations of individual works and entire collections. Soon after the Second World War, the Museum initiated a progressive policy of acquiring contemporary art through donations, including Jackson Pollock’s Cathedral in 1950, and purchases, such as David Smith’s Cubi XVII in 1965. A gift from the Hoblitzelle Foundation added important European old-master paintings and English and Irish silver. In the 1980s, the Wendy and Emery Reves Collection brought to the Museum an impressive ensemble of Impressionist paintings and drawings and spectacular marbles by Rodin, together with the decor and furniture from Coco Chanel’s villa, La Pausa. A series of formidable acquisitions and promised gifts in the contemporary domain culminated with the 2005 exhibition Fast Forward, putting the Museum at the forefront of contemporary art I.
