Clarke Abstract: The Silver-studded Blue is often considered to be a sedentary species, not moving more than 50 m during its life. However, based on recent research and my own experience from Surrey, this is not the case. Males can easily move 200 m when relocated away from ant nests, and new sites can be colonised within a few years from source sites at least 3 km away, probably a year or so after the ants Lasius niger or Lasius alienus have colonised. Silver-studded Blue is a butterfly of early successional habitat, so it needs to be mobile in order to find suitable habitat for the next generation. If it was very sedentary, then colonies would soon die out as habitat matures and becomes unsuitable to support the ants and the butterfly. Introduction This article has been prompted by the statements that Silver-studded Blue (Plebejus argus) is sedentary, barely moving more than 20 m, with 50 m considered exceptional, and breeding populations of 100 m or more considered isolated, based on three mark-release-recapture studies (Thomas, 2014) and (Eeles, 2019). However it has been abandoned as an area of lepidopterological studies for a long time. A total number of 80 butterfly species were recorded during inventory studies (2005-2008), which proved the occurrence of 80 species (81.6% of species recorded in the Mazovia voivodeship and about half of Polish fauna), including 7 from the European Red Data Book and 15 from the national red list (8 protected by law). Several xerothermophilous species have probably become extinct in the last few decadesColias ( myrmidone, Pseudophilotes vicrama, Melitaea aurelia, Hipparchia statilinus, H. alcyone), or are endangered in the KNP and in the region (e.g. Maculinea arion, Melitaea didyma), due to afforestation and spontaneous succession. Higrophilous butterflies have generally suffered less from recent changes in land use, but action to stop the deterioration of their habitats is urgently needed. -

These rugged mountains rise steeply from Turkey’s Black Sea coast and are an extension of the Caucasus mountains which are considered by the World Wide Fund for Nature to be a global biodiversity hotspot. The Kaçkars are thought to be the richest area for butterflies in this range, a hotspot in a hotspot with over 160 resident species. The valley of the River Çoruh lies at the heart of the Kaçkar and the centre of the trip explored its upper reaches at altitudes of 1,300—2,300m. The area consists of steep-sided valleys with dry Mediterranean vegetation, typically with dense woodland and trees in the valley bottoms interspersed with small hay-meadows. In the upper reaches these merge into alpine meadows with wet flushes and few trees. The highest mountain in the range is Kaçkar Dağı with an elevation of 3,937 metres The tour was centred around the two charming little villages of Barhal and Olgunlar, the latter being at the fur- thest end of the valley that you can reach by car. The area is very remote and only accessed by a narrow road that winds its way up the valley providing extraordinary views that change with every turn. -

The official California listing of Endangered and Threatened animals is contained in the California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Section 670.5. The official federal listing of Endangered and Threatened animals is published in the Federal Register, 50 CFR 17.11. The California Endangered Species Act of 1970 created the categories of “Endangered” and “Rare”. The California Endangered Species Act of 1984 created the categories of “Endangered” and “Threatened”. On January 1, 1985, all animal species designated as “Rare” were reclassified as “Threatened”. Animals that are candidates for state listing and animals proposed for federal listing are also included on this list. A state candidate species is one that the Fish and Game commission had formally noticed as being under review by the Department for addition to the State list. A federal proposed species is one for which a proposed regulation has been published in the Federal Register. A beta version of these data records will be made available on the OSAC server (http://osac.oregonstate.edu/IPT) at the time of this publication. The beta version will be replaced in the near future with an official release (version 1.0), which will be archived as a supplemental file to this paper. Methods Basic digitization protocols and metadata standards can be found in (Shepard et al. 2018). Identifications were confirmed by Jon Shepard and Paul Hammond prior to digitization. Nomenclature follows that of (Pelham 2008). Results The holdings in these two families are extensive. Combined, they make up 25,743 specimens (24,598 Lycanidae and 1145 Riodinidae). -

In this study, we asked whether the decline in butterfly populations near the copper-nickel smelter in Monchegorsk in northwestern Russia is accompanied by phenotypic stress responses to toxic pollutants, expressed as a decrease in body size and an increase in fluctuating asymmetry. We measured the concentrations of nickel and copper, forewing length, and fluctuating asymmetry in two elements of wing patterns in Boloria euphrosyne, Plebejus idas, and Agriades optilete collected 1–65 km from Monchegorsk. Body metal concentrations increased toward the smelter, confirming the local origin of the collected butterflies. The wings of butterflies from the most polluted sites were 5–8% shorter than those in unpolluted localities, suggesting adverse effects of pollution on butterfly fitness due to larval feeding on contaminated plants. However, fluctuating asymmetry averaged across two hindwing spots did not change systematically with pollution, thereby questioning the use of fluctuating asymmetry as an indicator of habitat quality in butterfly conservation projects. Guppy, Stephen M. Spomer, and B. Chris Schmidt Abstract. New diversity is reported and discussed among North American butterflies. Several dozen new taxa are named. A new "sibling" species has been found to occur throughout the Rocky Mts., introducing a new butterfly species to most states in western U.S. and to southern Alberta and BC. Several taxa of Colias, Euphydryas, Lycaena, and Plebejus are raised to species status. Many nam.e changes are made, and many taxa are switched between species to create several dozen new combinations. The relevance of species concepts to difficult groups of butterflies is explored. Introduction This paper consists of miscellaneous taxonomic studies on North American butterflies, some in the northeast, but mostly in the west. Most of the diversity of butterfly fauna in North America is in the western mountainous areas, where the human population is lower, so it has taken longer to study western butterflies, and a lot more study is needed. We have made new findings on many wes.tern butterflies, and this progress is reported below. And Scott recently moved his collection out of old dermestid-infested drawers into fine very-tight ones that those beetles cannot enter, and in the process of resorting them found a dozen unnamed subspecies, which are named below. As we study our butterflies and learn more and more about them, a disturbing pattern has emerged. -

Next, after a little confusion, we managed to rendezvous with the minibus representative and were led to our vehicle. We were then soon on our way on the motorway, skirting the city and heading west towards Corinth. We pulled off at Isthmia to stretch our legs, have a coffee or ice cream and admire the engineering wonder of the Corinth Canal. The sheer sides of the cutting through the rocks of the very narrow channel were quite a sight! A Blue Rock Thrush was spotted landing on the rough rock face of the canal walls as we waited to see if there were any passing ships. Butterflies at this stage were few to zero, but we could at least enjoy the scenery and expect plenty to come in the trip ahead. Moving on, we next turned north-west to head alongside the western flank of the Gulf of Corinth on the now finally completed upgraded motorway of the E65. This made for a much less stressful, rapid and relaxing drive. -

Alaska Natural Heritage Program Conservation Status Report Plebejus idas – (Linnaeus, 1761) Common Name: Northern Blue ELCODE: IILEPG5010 Taxonomic Serial No.: 777920 Synonyms: Lycaeides argyrognomon (Bergstrasser, 1779), Lycaeides idas (Linnaeus, 1761) Taxonomy Notes: Specimens from Alaska correspond to Plebejus idas alaskensis F. Chermock, 1945 (Philip & Ferris 2016). NatureServe (2017) indicates this taxon is extremely variable and in some regions it is almost indistinguishable from P. melissa (which does not occur in Alaska), except in genitalia and that it is possible some of the subspecies should be recognized as full species. The majority of butterfly records were determined only to species. We therefore only treat this butterfly at the species level for conservation assessment while recognizing that currently Alaskan specimens are considered to fall under (name of subspecies) - as treated by Ferris 2016.
