1 WWOR – Secaucus, NJ This report covers the time period November 1, 2005 to October 31, 2007 (except where otherwise specifically noted). I. PROGRAMMING: a. Local Newscasts: WWOR‐TV airs seven hours of local news each week, at the following times: Monday – Sunday: 10 p.m. ‐11 p.m. b. Breaking News Updates: WWOR broke into and/or preempted regularly scheduled programming on numerous occasions during the period covered by this report in order to bring its viewers breaking news or disaster information. This coverage included extended reporting on severe weather warnings, amber alerts, school closings, and other emergencies. A comprehensive list of cut‐ins and crawls is attached as Exhibit 1 c. Local News Stories: WWOR’s Investigative and Special Projects Unit (“I‐ Team”) dedicates itself to providing the public with important consumer stories as well as investigations that are aimed at assisting the public. Over the last few years, the dedication of this unit has provided its viewers with valuable information and resources that together have helped to protect and inform the community. Provided below are some important news stories that were aired during the report period: o Bad Contractor: During this report, a serially bad long Island contractor who has left homeowners in the lurch is exposed. As a result of the report, Suffolk county officials seized the contractor’s truck and equipment under a new law. The contractor was also sentenced to jail time. (Air Date: 9/30/05) o Text Spam: A channel 9 viewer contacted the station about concerns over receiving SPAM text messages. She had no control over what she was receiving and was charged hundreds of dollars. As a result of WWOR’s report, Verizon changed its policy regarding text messaging. (Air Date: 10/21/05) o Minority Eating Disorders: A report about an increasing number of African American women battling anorexia. My 9 reported on this disturbing trend and gave the viewing audience resources that they could use if they were suffering from the disorder. (Air Date:‐ 11/23/05) 2 o Phone Card Scam: The I‐Team uncovers a scheme by phone cards companies who were “shorting” consumers of air time and charging hidden usage fees. (Air Date: 2/17/06) o Bad Medicine: Dr. Jose Lopez was sent to jail after an exclusive undercover investigation in 2005 discovered him performing cosmetic surgery without a valid medical license.. (Air Date: 3/9/06) o Dangerous School: My 9 went undercover and followed school buses through Brooklyn, revealing dangerous driving with area school children on board. The story prompted school officials to make changes in their driver program. (Air Date: 3/15/06) o Towing Wars: This was a 3 part series that brought to light the sometimes illegal business practices used by towing companies. (Air date: 3/28/06) o Landlord Olefemi Falade was jailed following a WWOR expose of the deplorable conditions in his buildings. (Air date: 4/21/06) A comprehensive list of the station’s local news stories is attached hereto as Exhibit 2. d. Public Affairs Programming: WWOR produces and airs two public affairs programs, New Jersey Now and Real Talk. Each program consists of two 14‐minute segments embracing two program topics, and air in the 8:30 a.m. – 9 a.m. time period on Sunday mornings, for a total of 30 minutes of public affairs programming per week: Some of the key topics covered on the programs during the time period covered by this report are: • Real Talk: AARP Governor’s Forum, Part 1 and Part 2. A discussion with New Jersey gubernatorial candidates Jon Corzine (D) and Douglas Forrester (R) • New Jersey Now: A discussion with State Senator Loretta Weinberg and challenger Clara Nibot • New Jersey Now: A discussion with State Senator Ellen Karcher (D) and challenger Jennifer Beck (R) about the race and the upcoming election. Political Programming: : WWOR‐TV airs a 30‐minute program each week, Ask Congress, featuring members of the New Jersey congressional delegation, to discuss issues of importance to the state, including: • Senator Frank Lautenberg: A discussion with the Senior Senator from New Jersey about the anniversary of September 11th. 3 • Congressman Bill Pascrell: A discussion with the New Jersey Congressman about Homeland Security and Immigration. • Congressman Frank Pallone: A discussion with the New Jersey Congressman about Education and the Economy. WWOR‐TV also airs a 30 minute public affairs program each week, New Jersey Now (formerly Real Talk). PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY WWOR's on‐air newscasters and behind‐the‐scenes employees have made a commitment to participate in the North Jersey community. The station's employees take part in a variety of events in and around the city, such as: o MDA and the MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon o March of Dimes o Hoboken Italian Festival o Supersonic UltraFantastic Kids Day Weekend o Gospelfest o African Diaspora Festival o Action Against Hunger Food Drive o Greek Parade o NJ Performing Arts Center o Three Doctors Foundation WWOR’s on‐air newscasters and behind‐the‐scenes employees have made a commitment to participate in the New Jersey community. WWOR communicates with its community on a regular basis, both formally and informally. It is in close touch with the African American and Hispanic communities in New Jersey.
