Here are a few of the key stories of the year. December 30 The War in Iraq: • Toledo Gospel Rescue Mission: Annual Christmas Dinner; 5 pm: 419-241-6579 Nothing quite sums up what happened during our War in Iraq, other than the death tolls, than a statement of President George Bush last week in which he admitted that we weren’t January 1 winning the war. Just several days before the election, he had said we are “absolutely Happy New Year!! winning” the war. The Sykes’ loss • Amazon Lodge #4 Fish Fry: 11 am to 5 pm; Deliveries available on orders of 3 or more: to Taylor was a surprise in light of the polls and the fact that, in general, Democratic 419-531-7079 candidates, such as Marc Dann – who many would have thought would lose to Betty Montgomery in the Attorney General contest, were surging in the last moments before Election Day. • Damian Marley and Nas Bring Reggae, Hip-Hop to Gathering Of
Damian Marley And Nas Bring Reggae, Hip-Hop To Gathering Of The Vibes Duo performed material from their joint album, Distant Relatives, at this year's sum- mer festival. Aug 2 2010 12:01 PM EDT 1,305 By James Dinh BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut — It was an unexpected move, but adding Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Nas to this year's Gathering of the Vibes bill couldn't have made for a sweeter end to the four-day festival in Seaside Park this weekend. Before Marley and Nas lit up the stage on Sunday, a series of acts earlier in the day kept the crowd moving. Groups like the Ryan Montbleau Band turned the green lawn into a dance floor extravaganza, featuring groups of skilled hula- hoopers and ribbon twirlers. Jimmy Cliff treated the crowd with his flavorful reg- gae as he bounced from side to side of the stage in his head-to-toe yellow en- semble. At 62, Cliff proved that age really is nothing but a number with his vibrant energy and ear-to-ear smile. Vibes was never about age or looks, though. It's about the free spirit and carefree attitude that performers like Cliff embody. And as the sun began to set, anticipation grew before the Vibes main stage. "Are you ready for hip-hop and reggae?" asked DJ Green Lantern, as he stood before a flowing five-curtain backdrop. Nas and Damian Marley perform at the Gathering of the Vibes festival in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Saturday Photo: James Dinh/ MTV News In what seemed like just a few seconds, Damian Marley, his hype crew and duo of backup singers rushed the stage to the retro-sounding intro of their first single, "As We Enter." Soon after, Nas joined them onstage, where they delivered a high-energy opener, keeping up the Bob Marley tradition with a waving Ethiopian flag.

Phat Beats, Dope Rhymes Hip Hop Down Under Comin' Upper Ian Maxwell A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Performance Studies University of Sydney July 1997 Abstract This thesis is my attempt to understand the processes by which social agents negotiate belongingness and being across vast geographical, temporal, ethnic, cultural and historical discontinuities. In Sydney, Australia, m mid 1994, two middle class, educated white boys argue about something that they are calling their culture; a culture they call Hip Hop, most often associated with the rap music of dominantly African-American post-industrial inner cities of the United States. A breach of Hip Hop etiquette has lead to a conflict, to be resolved in a radio studio, live to air, by a rap battle. At stake are a number of questions about appropriate practice: whether it is permissible, or even necessary, in Sydney, in 1994, to be disrespectful of other rappers, and thereby to reproduce what are understood to be the historical conditions of emergence of North American Hip Hop Culture, or whether the Hip Hop Community in this place needs to be nurtured, to be protected from such divisive, potentially harmful practices. Laying their improvised rhymes over a slamming instrumental beat, the boys swap verses until one, beset by technical problems and hamstrung by his own deficiencies as a freestyler (he prefers to carefully compose his raps in the comfort of his bedroom) cedes, defeated by the weight of words and the ferocity of their delivery. The victor is able to assert, through his victory, the correctness of his account of just what Hip Hop is.
