WELCOME! Dear friends, I sincerely hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season, it certainly was busy and joyous here at the Symphony. As we enter 2020, we are entering one of the most exciting periods in the Symphony’s 70-year history. On March 7 we will host our annual Symphony Gala. If you have attended our Gala in the past, you know what a fantastic evening it is. This year we are thrilled to welcome one of the most renowned singers in the world: Susan Graham. She was hailed by the New York Times as, “…an artist to treasure,” and Gramophone called her, “America’s favorite mezzo.” Ms. Graham has risen to the highest echelon of international stardom. © Renee Parenteau She has performed regularly at the Metropolitan Opera and at many major international venues such as the Paris Opera, the Sydney Opera House and the Hollywood Bowl. We will combine great music, food, friends and unrivaled décor for a truly memorable evening. And the piece de resistance? It is surely our trip to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. for our performance at the SHIFT: A Festival of American Orchestras. Over 100 American orchestras applied, and only four were chosen to participate. It’s a fact: our orchestra has been recognized as one of the best by the Kennedy Center and Washington Performing Arts. We will be joined by many of you, our patrons, for a fabulous excursion to the nation’s capital for a concert and much more. Making the event even more exciting is the program we bring. Courtney Lewis and the artistic team worked hard to put together a program that would bring the spirit of Jacksonville with us to Washington, D.C. Among the pieces included are two works composed specifically for and about our beautiful River City. The first, Celebration, was composed by none other than the great Duke Ellington for the City of Jacksonville’s 150th anniversary. The second was Tickets: 904.354.5547 premiered just last year when we performed 2019 Mary Carr Patton Composer- Contributions: 904.354.5477 in-Residence Courtney Bryan’s piece Bridges, which is about how Jacksonville’s Administration: 904.354.5479 many bridges unite the communities in our large city.
