  • 30 Odd Years
30 Odd VIC GODARD Years 1976 2014 The Monkey and Debussy’s Cat but we went on to record what was to be released as the End of The Surrey People LP and the collaboration with Edwyn continued ( and still does, he’s producing 1979 Now) with him producing Long Term Side Effects as well. Common Thief was one of the first songs I tried out on my own 4 Track. Sansend was recorded in Sands End Fulham, basically a collaboration with old friend Nick Brown and was quite a challenge as I played nearly all the instruments and it was a step into the unknown technologically speaking as we were using a lot of computer programming. It took a long, long time to finish. Getting together and singing with the Bitter Springs in the ‘90’s led to a busy period with lots of gigs, the set list occasionally stretching to 28 songs!!. Towards the end of the decade we started recording the Ir- vine Welsh Blackpool Musical songs - still haven’t finished but do have a few that were completed includ- ing Blackpool and The Wedding Song. Our live version of Ambition quickly evolved from punk to a Maggie’s Farm inspired, slow ‘’boogie’’ and is a refreshing change (for me at least) from the original. The ‘Wet Dog’ Subway Sect with Paul ‘Trigger’ Williams and Leigh Curtis was fairly short lived, we did several gigs over about a year and recorded a few demos in a rehearsal room in Denmark St with The Rebel and his four track, including That Train which really captures the spirit of the group at the time.

Race and Performative Historiography in the American Theatre, 1991-2014 Rosa Elizabeth Schneider Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2019 Rosa Elizabeth Schneider All Rights Reserved Abstract Race and Performative Historiography in the American Theatre, 1991-2014 Rosa Elizabeth Schneider The history play is among the United States' oldest theatrical forms, and since its inception the genre has been used to represent and interrogate questions of identity and citizenship. Over the last quarter of the twentieth century until the present day, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of history plays that focus on questions of race and representation. “Race and Performative Historiography in American Theatre, 1991-2014” provides an explanation for this surge, revealing that theatre-makers (playwrights, directors, actors, and designers) drew on a long tradition of metatheatrical techniques on the American stage to make race central to their representation and creation of history. This dissertation scrutinizes some of these techniques, which I have termed Performative Historiography, as these techniques rewrite the way the audience understands our national and racial past. Combining extensive performance analysis, archival work, race theory, and American theatre history, "Race and Performative Historiography" expands the discipline's understanding of the role of the theater in representing America’s racial past, present, and future. Each chapter of “Race and Performative Historiography” describes one of these techniques: sedimented time, historical synecdoche, and revision and repetition. These techniques provide theater-makers new ways of making vivid the past, exposing embedded power structures and forms of prejudice, as well thinking through and against national myths and structures of thought.

Romance offers a structure to moblilize emotion and fantasy to deal with traumatic events. Focusing on the experience of amazement and its effect on literary content and form allows the critic to see the connections between romance and tragedy, and specifically between Renaissance romance and ancient tragedy, comedy, and romance. The three parts of this project provide a reading of amazement that is historically grounded in the period between 1550 and 1640. Although modern psychoanalytic theory and trauma studies are engaged in a limited way, the methodology of the thesis is to use the explicit, detailed, and ancient traditions available to Cervantes and Shakespeare as interpretive tools.
