WAB Studies Department (2020/2021) ES Celebration To continue the traditional of celebrating the Chinese New Year via a series of cultural activities, the EY will have making, Chinese traditional games, paper cutting, calligraphy, lantern making and Chinese tangram puzzle board cards making this time.

ES Students Celebrating Chinese New Year without a fair Students will do many types of cultural learning to celebrate the Chinese New Year within their classes.

Junior Grade 1: Friday, Sept. 18th Students are learning the Unit of Who We Are, they visited the Chinese Five Elements Exhibition and did the activities to learn how Chinese people see the world.

Grade 1 UOI: How the World Works Inquire about light: Shadow Puppet Show at ES on campus for students to learn and practice.

Grade 1 UOI: Where We Are in Place and Time – By sharing our stories we can connect to other people. Mr. Michael Crook did a presentation to G 1 students and shared the WAB founding stories at the old factory.

Grade 3 UOI: How the World Works Transdisciplinary theme: How the world works An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment. Central idea: The surface of the earth has formed over time and is still changing.

Grade 3 UOI: Sharing the Planet Human behavior and natural events affect the balance an ecosystem Field trips coming up for students to explore Heiqiao Park where via re-allocation of villages, a national park with eco-system balance was created for the people nearby. Trip dry runs are done, will do the trip next year.

Organic farmers will be invited to WAB to share their experience of organic farming, while a trip to the Organic Farmer Market is in the planning stage.

Grade 4 Day Trip for UOI Monday to Friday, Oct. 19 to 23 In combination of two UOIs, a new field trip is developed this year for G 4 students to learn in the real world about sustainable development and environmental protection. Visit Velux.

Grade 4 UOI: How the World Works - The design and constructions of structures is dependent on many factors. Day Trip Planning to visit: Water Cube, Bird Nest, Parkview Green, Drum and Bell Tower.

Grade 5 Visited Chinese Five Elements Exhibition Tuesday, Oct. 6th All five Grade 5 homerooms came to the ES lobby to learn about the Five Elements. They were divided into 3 small groups to rotate among three workshops to learn about the Chinese Five Elements from different aspects.

Grade 5 China Studies Guandi Village Residential Trip Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 14th-Oct.16th All Grade 5 students will join the Guandi Village trip for three days to engage with Chinese local community with WAB Mission as the trip focus.

New Project:Bring the Outside World In Grade 4 UOI Exhibition at WAB In combination of two UOIs, a new museum style exhibition is developed this year for G 4 students to learn about the city development. The location is ES Lobby. The contents include a big map of Beijing 1949, and lots of data from Beijing City Planning Museum. This is the new project this year to try to bring the outside resource into WAB when students cannot go on day trips to visit various museums in this special time.

New Project:Bring the Outside World In Grade 4 UOI: Who We Are Central Idea: Our body relies on interdependent systems to function properly. China Studies will set up three workshops at ES campus for Grade 4 students to learn and explore: Chinese Tea Culture; Traditional Chinese Medicine; Chinese Taiji, all led by China Studies staff and experts.

New Project: Bring the Outside World In Grade 5 Performing Arts UOI: How We Express Ourselves Learning Chinese National Tangible Cultural Heritage “Beige Drumming” Grade 9 students group initiated this project and recommended it to Grade 5. Grade 5 students are learning it and will perform this at the WS assembly.

New ES Exhibition for Multi-Grade Levels: SG1, G 3, G 4 and G 5. Theme: Sustainable Development The exhibition includes grand date of China Development, and a special focus on the sustainable development of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

MS students Making Moon Cakes Monday, Sept. 28 117 students MS students participated in the moon cake making during Chinese Language time.

MS: MS Students Science trip to Zoology Museum Students of all three grade levels joined the science trip to China Science Academy Zoology Museum led by Chinese scientists with hands on experience, such as dissecting insects and making specimens of samples.

New China Engagement Unit: MS Grade 6 PHE Classes and :

Starting from Nov. 18th, all Grade 6 PHE students will start a new unit on Lion Dance for three weeks.

Grade 6 PE finished their Lion Dance Unit and students learned quite a lot about the tradition and each group performed their own lion dance performance for the assessment.

New China Engagement Initiative Grade 6 Drama Planning on a two-day shadow puppet workshop on campus for G 6 drama. Planning on a shadow puppet exhibition at HUB for G 6 drama

Grade 6 Performing Art: Shadow Puppet Exhibition and Workshop A special shadow puppet group will set up a two-day workshop at WAB, working with G 6 students together to learn about this cultural heritage. Students will develop their own plays based on the learning.

New Project Bring the Outside World In Grade 7 PE New Unit: Planning to learning Chinese Powerful Drumming and Boat competition For the first time, Grade 7 PE students will learn Chinese Powerful Drumming Dance and Boat Competition on campus for China Engagement.

New China Engagement Initiative Grade 7 PHE Grade 7 PE students will learn Chinese Powerful Drumming Dance and Chinese Dragon Boat Competition on campus for China Engagement. Planning in progress, starting from May 2021. Grade 7 PE: Chinese Drumming Students will start a new unit on Chinese Powerful Drumming, which is China National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

MS Grade 8 PHE Classes and Taiji: Monday, Sept. 14th to Oct. 9th Students followed the Taiji Master and studies 24 styles of Taiji Martial Art duiring their PHE classes for three weeks, some students did a Taiji performance at the WS National Day and Moon Festival Assembly.

Grade 8 Humanities: “China Studies and Me” Unit Students did trip research, planning, background knowledge inquiring and interviews to learn about China Studies Residential Trips.

New Day 9 Initiatives for MS PE: Dragon Boat Racing at WAB Learning with Chinese professionals at Duck Lake Science: Working with China Science Academy Led by China Science Academy researchers, students visited China Zoology Museum with hands on experience of insect dissection and sample making, exploring nature at Olympic Forest Park.

Drama and Acrobatic: Led by Chinese Acrobatic Experts Students enjoyed a full learning and practicing session of juggling hats, balls, plates, sticks and hulas.

WAB MS Branch of Beijing Student Press Association, Beijing Youth Daily Our WAB student journalists have done quite a lot of learning of journalism with Beijing Youth Daily experts and did a lot of interviews and writing to publish their work, including Duck Lake Interview with Mr. Michael Christiansen.

Grade 6: Chinese Shadow Puppet Exhibition and Workshop for Performing Arts Students learned the history of shadow puppets and techniques of playing shadows with Chinese traditional performing arts experts and composed their own performances.

Grade 7: PHE class started the traditional Chinese powerful drumming for their PE dance unit.

Grade 7 Chinese poetry unit: learning with Chinese scholars about poem translation and Chinese calligraphy.

Grade 8: Students organized the first WAB students dragon boat teams with the training of Chinese local experts.

HS Grade 9 and IB DP Science with Ditan Hospital Thursday, Sept. 24 HS Grade 9 students and Grade 11 and 12 IB DP Science students attended the presentation by Dr. Wang Linghang (Director of Infectious Disease Department, Ditan Hospital) about Covid- 19 and gained the first-hand knowledge of this pandemic.

New China Engagement Initiative HS Grade 9 to 11 China Studies Day Trip Week in the week of May 10-14, 2021 Planning on multiple day trips during the week led by HS teachers in groups, with students choosing different trips for each day.

New China Engagement Initiative Grade 9 Science Unit on Olympics Planning on campus presentations from Olympic athletes and/or engineers involved in the Olympic stadiums for G 9 students.

HS Dance, Chinese Classical Dance workshops Led by famous Chinese dancer, Aidi Sun, Grade 9, 10 and 11 dance students did a full day workshop of classical Chinese dance and learned a lot about this tradition.

Grade 9 HS Humanities: Trip to and Dongjiaominxiang Whole Grade 9 students will visit National Museum of Chinese History section, followed by a tour led by Mr. Michael Crook of the Dongjiaomingxiang (old legation street) to learn about Chinese modern history (1840-1949)

New Initiative: HS China Studies Trip Week May 10th to 14th In planning, Twenty New day trips initiated by HS teachers, will take place during the week of May 10 to 14, and students will sign up for trips with different themes to explore Beijing.

HS Dance Grade 9-12 focused on Chinese folk dance led by Chinese experts

HS students had dragon boat experience led by local Chinese experts.

HS Music: Grade 10 students learned traditional Chinese instruments with local musicians, including Pipa, Erhu and Chinese Zither. They also learn Beijing Opera percussion with opera experts.

Whole Grade 9 HS Humanities Trip to Tiananmen Area Led by Mr. Crook, the students and visited the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Dongjiaominxian (previous legation street) and students visited China National Museum to learn modern Chinese history.

WS New York Times for Kids China and WAB Branch Tuesday, Sept. 29th Chief Editors from New York Times for Kids China came to WAB ES Second Floor Conference Room to lead the workshop of WAB students giving feedback about the newspaper. 21 students from WAS ES/MS/HS attended. Katarina leads this project.

Hybrid WS Assembly for National Day/Mid Autumn Festival Wednesday, Sept. 30th A very successful first time hybrid WS Assembly with staff, students and teachers participated to celebrate the Chinese National day and Moon Festival.

WAB Won Two National Awards WAB MS/HS students team won the 2020 World Model United Nation Award for “Best Team”, and WAB won the “Best Organizer” award.

New China Engagement Initiative for WAB Staff Chinese Tea Culture Workshops for Staff China Studies led 6 Chinese Tea Culture workshops in English, and two tea workshops in Chinese.

Awards: MUN Awards • WAB students actively participated in the local events and won “Best Team” in World Model UN Competition organized by the Chinese government;WAB won “Best Organizer” award as a school;

Postcard-Paintings Competition • WAB students won “I love panda” International Children’s Postcards- Paintings Competition award organized by the Chinese government; WAB won “Outstanding Organization Award” as a school.
