Snow-white. Cool. Water means momentum. Speed. Flowing. The nature of water is to flow. To keep flowing. To keep moving forward. To seek something new always. To discover new paths. To traverse new geographies. To conquer the newer, unknown lands by taking newer twists and turns. Perhaps with the knowledge of this nature of water, the word ‘jeevan’ in Sanskrit, meaning ‘life’ has been accepted symbolically for the human life and the overall dynamics of life. A human life too, like water, seeks novelty all the time. That’s the nature of life. Life becomes full of spirit when new paths are found, new geographies are traversed, new twists and turns are taken, new lands are discovered and new, unknown areas are conquered. It remains full of spirit as a result of it. The creative literature that is an expression of life is therefore also like the flowing water. It leaves the beaten paths and takes newer turns.

lives of the women Volume 1 On Stage/ Off Stage Edited by Jerry Pinto Sophia Institute of Social Communications Media Supported by the Laura and Luigi Dallapiccola Foundation Published by the Sophia Institute of Social Communications Media, Sophia Shree B K Somani Memorial Polytechnic, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Mumbai 400 026 All rights reserved Designed by Rohan Gupta be.net/rohangupta Printed by Aniruddh Arts, Mumbai Contents Preface i Acknowledgments iii Shanta Gokhale 1 Nadira Babbar 39 Jhelum Paranjape 67 Dolly Thakore 91 Preface We’ve heard it said that a woman’s work is never done. What they do not say is that women’s lives are also largely unrecorded. Women, and the work they do, slip through memory’s net leaving large gaps in our collective consciousness about challenges faced and mastered, discoveries made and celebrated, collaborations forged and valued. Combating this pervasive amnesia is not an easy task. This book is a beginning in another direction, an attempt to try and construct the professional lives of four of Mumbai’s women (where the discussion has ventured into the personal lives of these women, it has only been in relation to the professional or to their public images). And who better to attempt this construction than young people on the verge of building their own professional lives? In learning about the lives of inspiring professionals, we hoped our students would learn about navigating a world they were about to enter and also perhaps have an opportunity to reflect a little and learn about themselves. So four groups of students of the post-graduate diploma in Social Communications Media, SCMSophia’s class of 2014 set out to choose the women whose lives they wanted to follow and then went out to create stereoscopic views of them.

Its founder members were Joy Michael, Rati Bartholomew, Sushma Seth, Roshan Seth, Kusum Haidar , Nigam Prakash, Marcus Murch, and Sneih Das . Yatrik has many ‘firsts’ to its credit. It was the first to establish and maintain weekend repertory theatre and the first to produce plays for children. With the aim of promoting theatre in education, Yatrik began holding workshops in schools and colleges and staging its plays in education institutions. Yatrik was also among the very first to enter the formidable world of musicals, the staging of which has always been a deterrent to most amateur groups. Yatrik has from the outset sponsored original Indian plays both in Hindi and English, and has also encouraged translations of regional Indian plays and adaptations of foreign plays, bringing to the Delhi stage several classics of Western and regional drama and, most recently, some of modern India’s finest plays. Yatrik has produced over 300 plays in English, Hindi , Urdu and Punjabi since 1964, surely living up to

Political activist, actor, playwright and poet, Safdar had been deeply committed, like so many young men and women of his generation, to the anti-imperialist, secular and egalitarian values that were woven into the rich fabric of the nation’s liberation struggle. Safdar moved closer to the Left, eventually joining the CPI(M), to pursue his goal of being part of a social order worthy of a free people. Tragically, it would be of the manner of his death at the hands of a politically patronised mafia that would single him out. The spontaneous, nationwide wave of revulsion, grief and resistance aroused by his brutal murder transformed him into a powerful symbol of the very values that had been sought to be crushed by his death. Such a death belongs to the revolutionary martyr. 6 PUBLICATIONS Safdar was thirty-four years old when he died.
