lives of the women Volume 1 On Stage/ Off Stage Edited by Jerry Pinto Sophia Institute of Social Communications Media Supported by the Laura and Luigi Dallapiccola Foundation Published by the Sophia Institute of Social Communications Media, Sophia Shree B K Somani Memorial Polytechnic, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Mumbai 400 026 All rights reserved Designed by Rohan Gupta be.net/rohangupta Printed by Aniruddh Arts, Mumbai Contents Preface i Acknowledgments iii Shanta Gokhale 1 Nadira Babbar 39 Jhelum Paranjape 67 Dolly Thakore 91 Preface We’ve heard it said that a woman’s work is never done. What they do not say is that women’s lives are also largely unrecorded. Women, and the work they do, slip through memory’s net leaving large gaps in our collective consciousness about challenges faced and mastered, discoveries made and celebrated, collaborations forged and valued. Combating this pervasive amnesia is not an easy task. This book is a beginning in another direction, an attempt to try and construct the professional lives of four of Mumbai’s women (where the discussion has ventured into the personal lives of these women, it has only been in relation to the professional or to their public images). And who better to attempt this construction than young people on the verge of building their own professional lives? In learning about the lives of inspiring professionals, we hoped our students would learn about navigating a world they were about to enter and also perhaps have an opportunity to reflect a little and learn about themselves. So four groups of students of the post-graduate diploma in Social Communications Media, SCMSophia’s class of 2014 set out to choose the women whose lives they wanted to follow and then went out to create stereoscopic views of them.

Its founder members were Joy Michael, Rati Bartholomew, Sushma Seth, Roshan Seth, Kusum Haidar , Nigam Prakash, Marcus Murch, and Sneih Das . Yatrik has many ‘firsts’ to its credit. It was the first to establish and maintain weekend repertory theatre and the first to produce plays for children. With the aim of promoting theatre in education, Yatrik began holding workshops in schools and colleges and staging its plays in education institutions. Yatrik was also among the very first to enter the formidable world of musicals, the staging of which has always been a deterrent to most amateur groups. Yatrik has from the outset sponsored original Indian plays both in Hindi and English, and has also encouraged translations of regional Indian plays and adaptations of foreign plays, bringing to the Delhi stage several classics of Western and regional drama and, most recently, some of modern India’s finest plays. Yatrik has produced over 300 plays in English, Hindi , Urdu and Punjabi since 1964, surely living up to

  • Film Financing and Television Programming: a Taxation Guide
Now in its eighth edition, KPMG LLP’s (“KPMG”) Film Financing and Television Programming: A Taxation Guide (the “Guide”) is a fundamental resource for film and television producers, attorneys, tax executives, and finance executives involved with the commercial side of film and television production. The guide is recognized as a valued reference tool for motion picture and television industry professionals. Doing business across borders can pose major challenges and may lead to potentially significant tax implications, and a detailed understanding of the full range of potential tax implications can be as essential as the actual financing of a project. The Guide helps producers and other industry executives assess the many issues surrounding cross-border business conditions, financing structures, and issues associated with them, including film and television development costs and rules around foreign investment. Recognizing the role that tax credits, subsidies, and other government incentives play in the financing of film and television productions, the Guide includes a robust discussion of relevant tax incentive programs in each country. The primary focus of the Guide is on the tax and business needs of the film and television industry with information drawn from the knowledge of KPMG International’s global network of member firm media and entertainment Tax professionals. Each chapter focuses on a single country and provides a description of commonly used financing structures in film and television, as well as their potential commercial and tax implications for the parties involved. Key sections in each chapter include: Introduction A thumbnail description of the country’s film and television industry contacts, regulatory bodies, and financing developments and trends.

  • Ethnic Media and Identity Construction: the Representation of Women in the an Ethnic Newspaper in South Africa
E-ISSN 2281-4612 Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies Vol 2 No 8 ISSN 2281-3993 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy October 2013 Ethnic Media and Identity Construction: The Representation of Women in the An Ethnic Newspaper in South Africa D. Lecturer and HOD: Department of Public Relations Management Faculty of Management Sciences Durban University of Technology Tel: +27 (0) 31-3736826, e-mail: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/ajis.2013.v2n8p697 Abstract Media are powerful agents of socialisation. Through representation, media helps in constructing and reproducing gender identities. The representation of how women are constructed by the media has travelled due to globalization. The 2006 Global Media Monitoring Project reveals that women are under-represented in news. The media are therefore construed as constructing gender subjectivity. For example, women are literally absent in news, politics and economics and hardly ever appear as spokespersons or as field experts. These subjective representations are often framed though the lenses of the media producers and are influenced by the political economy of the media. Media are therefore seen as representing a distorted version of women. Gallagher (2004), however states that in South Africa, the process of changing gender in the newsroom has started and media audiences, texts and institutions have changed, largely due to the persistent gender advocacy. Based on this, this paper sets out to investigate how Indian women are represented in a South African newspaper targeted at a cross-national ethnic readership.
