Journal of IT and Economic Development 10(1), 1-10, April 2019 1 Huawei: An Information and Communications Technology Company Walaa Alkhawajah Central Michigan University, USA [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This research paper gives an account of Huawei, a global leader in the provision of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices. Huawei has grown from a company that offered cheap smartphones in order to appeal to customers to a global leader in the smartphone industry by providing a brand that can compete with Apple and Samsung. The success of Huawei has been linked with the company’s capability to convert the world into a digital globe by providing safe, flexible, and open ICT infrastructure platform to industries and organizations. The company has therefore been able to attract customers from various countries worldwide. Huawei changed its business model of flooding the globe with unbranded and cheap phones and now produces high-quality and branded phones. Politics have hampered the company's growth in the US. However, in Sub-Saharan Africa, its growth has been remarkable as Africa is a high-quality network provider at a low cost. The Middle East is an imperative market as both a region and a growth driver. The massive growth has been attributed to the ambitious projects undertaken by Huawei. It has improved its competitive advantage by outsmarting the current technology by the development of 5G networks. The company has also achieved viable leadership through the rotation of its CEOs. It has been offering the best phones in the market through the provision of phones with high-quality cameras. -

Alheadary All Rights Reserved 4 ABSTRACT Free Space Optics for 5G Backhaul Networks and Beyond Wael G. Alheadary The exponential increase of mobile users and the demand for high-speed data services has resulted in significant congestions in cellular backhaul capacity. As a solution to satisfy the traffic requirements of the existing 4G network, the 5G net- work has emerged as an enabling technology and a fundamental building block of next-generation communication networks. An essential requirement in 5G backhaul networks is their unparalleled capacity to handle heavy traffic between a large number of devices and the core network. Microwave and optic fiber technologies have been considered as feasible solutions for next-generation backhaul networks. However, such technologies are not cost effective to deploy, especially for the backhaul in high-density urban or rugged areas, such as those surrounded by mountains and solid rocks. Addi- tionally, microwave technology faces alarmingly challenging issues, including limited data rates, scarcity of licensed spectrum, advanced interference management, and rough weather conditions (i.e., rain, which is the main weather condition that affects microwave signals the most). -

Experimental evidence has shown that adult birds can correct for such displacements and return to their goal. However, the nature of the cues used by migratory birds to perform long distance navigation is still debated. In this experiment we subjected adult lesser black-backed gulls migrating from their Finnish/Russian breeding grounds (from >60°N) to Africa (to < 5°N) to sensory manipulation, to determine the sensory systems required for navigation. We translocated birds westward (1080 km) or eastward (885 km) to simulate natural navigational challenges. When translocated westwards and outside their migratory corridor birds with olfactory nerve section kept a clear directional preference (southerly) but were unable to compensate for the displacement, while intact birds and gulls with the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve sectioned oriented towards their population-specific migratory corridor. Thus, air-borne olfactory information seems to be important for migrating gulls to navigate successfully in some circumstances. Migrating birds fly over thousands of kilometres to return to previously visited breeding or non-breeding grounds. -

It is important to understand the roots of the success of HACCP, because it is not just a constraint to be complied with. If well understood, HACCP is an opportunity for Filipino farmers to take the lead in the highly competitive context of the 21st century’s global economy. With the globalization of trade, the geographical and cultural gaps between food producers and food consumers have never been larger. Filipinos eat imported rice and Europeans eat imported shrimps. But the growing distance between producing and consuming areas is also a factor that breeds misunderstanding and sometimes distrust, whether justified or not. -

ETSI Workshop on M2M STANDARDIZATION 4th and 5th of June 2008 Speakers’ biographies Marylin ARNDT leads a research group working on Wireless Sensors Networks at Orange Labs R&D center, Meylan, France. She Graduated as engineer from the 'Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Télécommunications', Paris, and obtained a phD in microelectronics from the University of Languedoc at Montpellier in 1982. She developed a first experience at CNET, working on Telecom Circuits Design in the newly created research lab dedicated to Microelectronic Technologies Studies. From 1990, she managed successively two research groups working on Modem system design and more closely on RF front end and digital baseband design. She conducted personally a research activity, leading PHD students. In parallel, the laboratory moved from telecom circuit design to system design. Since 1998 her topics of interest moved towards Wireless RF interfaces embracing the Cellular domain, then WLAN and WPAN. Capillary Networks for M2M applications, is her main topic of interest at the moment. Luis BARRIGA, Ericsson is a Senior Specialist at the Communications Security Lab of Ericsson Research, Sweden. He holds an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University and a Ph.D. in Computer Systems from the Royal Institute of Technology. From 1986 to 1997 he worked in academia as systems administrator and research engineer in operating systems and parallel computing. After finishing his Ph.D., he joined Ericsson in 1997 where he has worked mainly in the security field and related topics such as e-commerce, identity management, network security and mobile multimedia services. Within Ericsson, he has worked in research projects, customer projects and standardization bodies IETF, WAP, Liberty Alliance, 3GPP, W3C and OMA. -
