It fills me with enormous pride to reflect on what we have achieved together as a conservation charity over the past 60 years, and how vitally important our work continues to be. With the climate and ecological crisis, our work is more important than ever. There is much to do. 6 | Essex Wildlife Trust Impact Report 2019 WORKING TOGETHER FOR WILDLIFE WORKING TOGETHER FOR WILDLIFE Essex Wildlife Trust Impact Report 2019 | 7 Demonstrating wildlife gain One of the many new projects we developed in 2019 was Share Our Shores, a partnership project with the RSPB, which you’ll be hearing a lot more about in the coming years. As the human population of Essex grows, we must protect our breeding wildlife. Share Our Shores is one of our first ‘behaviour change’ projects at the Trust. The aim is to increase the populations of important and iconic beach-nesting birds, such as the tiny little tern, the ringed plover, and the brightly beaked oystercatcher, by creating ideal nesting sites and reducing recreational disturbance. Among the most exciting projects to come to fruition in 2019 has been the Essex Barn Owl Conservation Project. In the project’s final year of monitoring, we recorded 207 nesting sites, 51 of which were active sites (one or more eggs) compared to 39 in 2018, with a mean brood size of 3 chicks and a nesting success rate of 24%, the highest recorded by the project. Barn owls are one of Essex’s most iconic birds. To see their numbers increasing is fantastic. 2019 was a significant year for planning casework, one of the most important ways that we influence wildlife gain across the county. We have been involved in green infrastructure planning for the Dunton Hills development in Brentwood, we engaged in the consultation process for Middlewick Ranges in Colchester, and we contributed Protecting to the masterplanning of two strategic housing sites in Chelmsford. We negotiated with the developer of a new housing scheme adjacent to Blue House Farm, the outcome of which was a more sympathetic lighting strategy, and we began work with the Environment Bank on a biodiversity project for Cherry Orchard Jubilee Country Park. A significant amount of work was involved in investigating the planning history that led to habitat damage at Salary Brook in wildlife Colchester, as well as subsequent negotiations. When the Club first came into being it might not have been that inappropriate to regard its activities as encompassing ‘hunting, shooting and fishing’, the collection of dead voucher specimens of everything living in Essex being one of the Club’s primary objectives. Today however, our members would regard themselves as anything but, members of an organization that might be misconstrued as indulging in ‘field sports’ . Our Club is surely primarily a natural history society, with a present-day emphasis an recording, conservatian and natural history education. Your Council had a special meeting on the 31 January to look at the present and potential future role of the EFC in Essex, debating just how we could give the Club a new attractive image that would give us a steadily increasing membership, and how best we might interrelate to such organisations as the Essex Wildlife Trust, English Nature, the National Biological Records Centre and the local county natural history societies. Particularly in view of our proposed partnership in a new museum on Epping Forest. As a result of this meeting Council will be proposing at the next AGM that the Club should change its name to the ESSEX NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY, and redefine its objectives, and rules, in line with its modern image. We propose subtitling the new name with ‘formerly the Essex Field Club’ for a few years, and retention of our ‘speckled wood on blackberry leaf logo’ , to give us continuity.

Constructed in the late 1930’s on the course of Limit of E.W.Co Land Layer Brook, which runs into the Roman River, it covers an area of 1210 acres, holds 26,000 mega Layer Brook litres (5,700 million gallons) of water and has a B1026 top water level of 17.8m AOD. To Maldon It was constructed to store water from winter rainfall for summer use as part of the water supply network for the southern half of Essex. Water is abstracted from the river Stour at Stratford St Mary and pumped 16 kilometers (11 miles) into the reservoir through 34” and 36” steel pipelines.

ECC and SBC are working jointly to produce a Replacement Waste Local Plan as required under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act (2004). Once adopted the Waste Local Plan will provide the framework for where new waste development should go and determining planning applications for new waste facilities, and changes to existing waste facilities. The Stort Navigation is of particular historical significance and its characteristics make it unique in the Thames Region. The objective of the NRA TR is to conserve and, wherever possible, enhance the value of this resource. This will be achieved through appropriate direct management of the water environment, including the provision of appropriate standards of urban flood protection, and partnership with the riparian local authorities, British Waterways Board and other interested organisations. A central part of this objective is to secure the designation of the corridor of the Lower Stort Valley and the Stort Navigation as a ’Special Heritage Area* in the statutory development plans. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Aim of the Catchment Management Plan Under the 1989 Water Act the National Rivers Authority (NRA) is required to conserve and enhance the water environment. Such an important role requires a multi-disciplinary approach; catchment management planning seeks to provide a multi-disciplinary strategy for each catchment.
