Erf 513 (Site A2) can provide for affordable, publicly assisted housing for the foreseeable future and plans are in place to cluster public facilities near the Napier Community Services Centre and Site A2. NAPIER SDF Cape Agulhas Spatial Development Framework 2017-2022 75 3.5.3 Struisbaai Struisbaai is the largest coastal settlement in CAM, and sought-after retirement/ second home area and holiday destination. Key proposals in the SDF are to: Explore expanded tourism and day visitor recreational facilities on the coast west of Struisbaai North (subject to detailed precinct planning). Focus new tourism related facilities (including day visitor, accommodation, and commercial uses) in the general area of the caravan park, business district and harbour (subject to detailed precinct planning for the area bounded by Protea Road, Church Street, Cinneraria Street, and Harbour Road with a view to maximise tourism related facilities, rationalise vehicular movement and parking (including boat trailers), improve pedestrian and NMT movement ensure efficient harbour use, and manage visitor impact on private residences). A continuous NMT route linking Struisbaai North – and focal public places in between – to the Lighthouse precinct in L’Agulhas (this will require dedicated implementation and negation with developers over an extended period of time). Although planning has commenced for Site A (west of and abutting the R319) it would be preferable to accommodate part of demand on the municipally owned land off Adelle Street (Erf 1256).     ABNORMAL WAVES ON THE SOUTH EAST COAST OF SOUTH AFRICA by J. K. M allo ry Master M ariner, Captain, S. A. Navy (Rtd.), Professor of Oceanography, University of Cape Town Much has been said and written recently about the abnormal waves which have been experienced over the years along the eastern seaboard of South Africa. Many theories have been put forward as to the probable causes of these waves which have incurred considerable damage to vessels when steaming in a southwesterly direction down the east coast between Durnford Point and Great Fish Point. It would therefore be of interest to examine the details concerning the individual occurrences as far as they are known. Unfortunately it is not always possible to obtain full details after a period of time has elapsed since the wave was reported, hence in some instances the case histories are incomplete. It is safe to say that many other ships must have experienced abnormal waves off the South African coast between Durnford Point and Cape Recife, but because the speed of the vessel at the time had been suitably reduced, the ship sustained no damage and hence there was no specific reason for reporting such an occurrence other than as a matter of interest. This is unfortunate because so much more could have been learnt about these phenomena if more specific reports were available, especially if they were to include details on wind and waves, meteorological data, soundings, ship’s course and speed. A list of eleven known cases of vessels either having reported encountering abnormal wave conditions or having foundered as a result of storm waves is given in Appendix A.

The area is of high conservation, cultural and historical value and significance, not only locally but also globally. The Park was officially proclaimed on September 23 1999. Nineteen years later the park stretches over 21,971.0161 ha of land. Revisiting the Southernmost Tip Icon structure - Richard Williams, Senior Project Manager, Infrastructure and Special Projects The Southernmost Tip of Africa is one of South Africa’s most visited tourism destinations. The design, development and construction of an iconic structure marks the geographical and spiritual significance of the Southernmost Tip of Africa to enhance the status of the area as a prime national and international tourist destination. An Iconic Ideas competition was launched in 2010. The most important message of this concept was that visitors will experience a heightened sense of awareness when they stand in silence at the point (A. Winde). A panel of judges, from various backgrounds with different levels of expertise in their specialist fields, selected four different artists as winners. These artists were asked to combine their concepts and come up with one combined concept. In 2014 heritage indicators for the southernmost point (Foot of Africa) were prepared for submission to Heritage Western Cape. In addition, an environmental impact assessment (EIA) was also prepared.

First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries. The enormous challenges — but also the vast opportunities — of acting on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary year. Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable. At the end of 2020, nations will be expected to increase their national commitments to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. The time is now for citizens to call for greater global ambition to tackle our climate crisis. Unless every country in the world steps up – and steps up with urgency and ambition — we are consigning current and future generations to a dangerous future. Earth Day 2020 will be far more than a day.
