The objective of the study was to identify the potential and problems for Manga culture and its future in the international market. Also I try to examine the potential of Manga to establish its academic status. This research will be based on the analysis of the transition and features of Manga related with Japanese culture, and a case study of Urasawa Naoki’s works from a feminist and postmodernist points of view. The research method is basically the analysis of literatures, interviews with Manga artists and my own observation. The first chapter starts with the analysis of comic book features from visual cultural point of view, a historical overview of Manga and Japanese cultural introduction in a relation to Manga. The second chapter will analyze Naoki Urasawa who is said to be one of the best contemporary Manga artists in Japan, or the reincarnation of Osamu Tezuka, well-known as the father of Manga. The third chapter focuses on the comparative study of Manga in Japan and Sweden in order to evaluate Manga’s potential and to identify the problems using the interviews of those who work in Manga industry, and finally the last chapter contains the feminist perspectives on Manga. -

WENDY SIUYI WONG Globalizing Manga: From Japan to Hong Kong and Beyond Many modern societies produce a form of visual and narrative art that con- tains a series of printed pictures, usually though not always with text.¹ In English, readers may call it sequential art, comics, comic books, cartoons, cartoon strips, or graphic novels. Th e French term is bande dessinée (BD), lit- erally, “strip drawing.” In Chinese, commonly used terms are manhua, lian- huantu, and car-ton. Th e written Chinese characters for manhua are the basis for both the Japanese and the Korean terms for comics, which are, respec- tively, manga and manhwa. No matter what it is called, this visual art form in various countries and languages has similarities and diff erences. Scott McCloud points out that this art form is a communication medium able to convey information and to pro- duce aesthetic pleasure for readers.² As a part of the globalization of media, American comics and animation have a long history of exporting such works. Studies fi nd that American comics played an important role in introducing modern comics to Asia, as in Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s.³ In Japan, the great comics artist Tezuka Osamu openly acknowledged the infl uence of early Walt Disney and Max Fleisher animation in his work.⁴ Japan’s comics 23 and animation industry was the most developed among countries in Asia in the early 1960s. -

Os guerreiros não são retratados como indivíduos heróicos, mas, mais como bandos de servos da Família Imperial. Esta abordagem sugere que o pergaminho foi criado na segunda metade do século 13, por e para pessoas que desejavam esse retrato da figura do samurai como leal ao imperador em uma época em que a influência e o poder da classe guerreira prevalecia sobre a Corte Imperial e a aristocracia. Through ethnography fieldwork in Indonesia, I focused on the popularity of manga in Indonesia media, publications and event to observe its impact to the hobbyist and professional artists. Manga Bibliography Unlike Western Graphic Novels which generally follow the narrative tradition found in written literature, Manga stories are written because the authors (or Manga-ka) have a targeted audience they would like to reach and some stock characters they would like to present. In Manga, the characters are created first for a specific audience. Those characters are then used to tell stories which (the Manga-ka hopes) are of interest to the targeted audience. Therefore, a good way to divide the broad world of Manga into manageable genres is to first determine the audience type, then establish the theme of the stories or the special characteristics of the protagonists. Because of this focus on the intended audience, the most common launching platform for manga stories is in periodicals intended for specific audiences. The bibliography which follows will highlight some of the leading magazines aimed at each type of audience as well as give examples of some of the more popular stories which have gained enough of a following to take on a life of their own and be published as stand-alone (often serialized) works called “tankobon”.
