2011 Programme Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2011 WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2011 Welcome and Thank You for visiting our 56th Annual Exhibition. Last year we celebrated our 80th Anniversary of the formation of our club in 1930 and enjoyed visits from many previous members of the club, some who had travelled considerable distances. The earliest recorded ex-member in the victors book was 1946. With an increased attendance the show was deemed to be a success and this year we have made every effort to repeat the quality of the layouts exhibited. We have layouts in all popular scales and have two that have not been seen in public before ; hopefully something for everyone. Model Railways is an inspirational hobby, and caters for all of the different skills that bring a completed model railway layout together. Whet her your interest is just in a particular aspect - History, Construction, Electronics, Wood and Metal work, Collecting, or just running trains - you will find membership of a club and being part of a team can provide a lifetime’s enjoyment. Take time to relax with some Drinks and Refreshments in the restaurant area where you could get more information from members meeting between exhibition duties by asking them about us. Maybe try your luck in our 2011 Exhibition Raffle , or our special CLOSED BID AUCTION for a limited edition "Imperial Railways" Hornby DCC Train Set. (See our Club Information Stand, No. 9.) If you would like to consider getting involved in the club, please visit our Club Information Stand (No. 9), check out our website at www.iwemrc.org.uk or contact the club’s Hon. Secretary: Charlie Nelson, 4,Great Gardens Road, Hornchurch, RM11 2BB. Tel. 01708 450424. Charlie will be on our 7¼” Gauge Section Stand (No. 2). The club runs Steam/Open Days at Chadwell Heath Station, first Sunday in ever y month, April to September. As well as rides on our 7¼” Gauge Railway, the club house is open to the public on these days, with several of the layouts running. The various club sections meet at the club at least four days per week, so why not come and see us? Peter Pulham Frank Roberts President Chairman Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the contents of this guide are correct , Railway modelling is essentially an amateur hobby and we rely on the goodwill of a very large number of people to stage this exhibition. Consequently the Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club cannot be held responsible for any error or omission, nor failure for any exhibitor to appear. 5 Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2011 Brian Baker All aspects of Model Railways Books & Videos H & M Controllers Quality second-hand goods bought & sold All gauges catered for Fair prices paid for whole & part collections ℡ 020 8508 4040 Local trader established 30 years 6 Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2011 Entrance Stands 1-2 Ride On Railways 01708 708768 1 5” Gauge Electric Railway www.rideonrailways.co.uk We are delighted to welcome back exhibition regulars, Garden Railway specialists Ride On Railways, who will once again be providing indoor train rides on their 5" Gauge electric miniature railway. It was hoped that this would promote tourist and visitor business for the branch to Gosport from Fareham Goods on the line was mainly agricultural, indeed Wickham station was once known to provide a whole train full of strawberries. The line was known as the Strawberry line. During the First World War, the line was used for troop movements to Portsmouth and Southampton, for embarkation to the continent. After the First World War, the line faced increasing competition from road services. However, during WW2, the line was famed for hosting the train that housed the War Cabinet in June 1944. The cabinet visited the area for final discussions with Winston Churchill prior to D-Day. The tunnel at Droxford was earmarked as an air raid shelter for Churchill and his staff. In 1955 the line closed for passenger services and goods services ended in 1968. The line was used by in 1967-9 for testing of the Sadler Pacerailer, a type of railbus and forerunner of the bus based designs such as the LEV (Leyland Experimental Vehicle) and ultimately the class 140 family (Pacers). Track on the branch was lifted by 1975. Fiction – or a little bit of politics: Instead of failing and closing, it is assumed that the branch to Gosport prospered and the town grew along the lines of Worthing. The resulting passenger revenue led to the Meon Valley line being electrified in the 1960’s. In addition, with the increasing demand for housing (mainly led by commuter employment), the Conservative Government of 1970 allowed limited development of some of the villages along the Meon Valley line. The station of Meon Combe benefited from the increased passenger traffic. The layout is set in autumn 1971. In order to increase the layout’s traffic with a greater variety of the trains and stock used, it has been assumed that there is a diversion of services due to a landslip on the Portsmouth direct line that runs via Guildford. 9 Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2011 Norvic Junction Erith MRS 7 N Gauge, BR Southern www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/erithmrs Norvic Junction was conceived even before the battle of Fearlessness and represents an area of the Southern Region providing for the village, local coal and a service for commuters into the city. Norvic Junction is a club layout and was purchased from the N Gauge society (North West Kent Area Group) having previously been exhibited as ‘St Mary's’ in another era. It is intended to be a family layout, so during the show you will see steam, diesel and maybe even Thomas, James and Percy, running depending on which operators are at the exhibition. The layout is 12ft by 3ft and has a twin track running line together with sidings and a branch line. Track work is Peco code 80 and most of the buildings are scratch-built (using card). Cheerio Charlton Richard Moules 8 7mm scale, Trams [email protected] Cheerio Charlton represents, in 7mm scale, a very short but fairly typical length of London's ‘1st generation’ tramways. It is a representation of a few yards of Woolwich Road, Charlton, as it was until the trams ceased to run on the 5th July 1952. This was the location of the tramways Central Repair Depot, accessed by a siding off the double track "main line" which carried 3 of the last tram routes to operate, Nos.36, 38 & 40. The trams collected current from the underground "conduit" system, so there are no overhead wires, and the model trams represent the various types that operated on these routes (although they all bear a strong family resemblance!) There are also a few "works" cars and one or two "oddities". Woolwich Road and the buildings modelled still exist, only the trams have gone! The layout is designed to be automatic in operation, so giving me time to answer any questions you have, or just chat about trams! 10 Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2011 I & WEMRC Information www.iwemrc.org.uk & Sales Stand 9 Why not come and have a chat at the club information stand, where you can find out about the club, its activities and details of membership, and see the range and depth of the interests the Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club caters for.

  • Metro-Cammell Diesel-Electric Pullman Trains by R
Metro-Cammell Diesel-Electric Pullman Trains By R. P. Bradley On 24 June 1960 a demonstration run of BR's diesel-electric Pullman train took place between Marylebone and High Wycombe. The six and eight-car trains were designed and built by the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage & Wagon Co. for the Pullman Car Company, to be operated on the LMR and WR respectively. The Railway Gazette used an interesting phrase as it reported the new arrivals; "The term de-luxe applied by the British Transport Commission to the new diesel- electric Pullman multiple- unit trains which begin operations shortly in the London Midland and Western Regions of British Railways suggests an over-abundance of rare but desirable qualities which are not necessary for life." The British Transport Commission’s Press Release for 23rd June 1960 described them as: “These 90 mph de-luxe diesel expresses - there are five of them altogether-are of an entirely new type designed to bring a fresh conception of main-line railway passenger travel to Britain, with superior standards of comfort, and a personal service of' meals and refreshments for all passengers.” A brief look at the internal appointments of these trains certainly lends weight to those ideas. One of the 8-car Western Region units on the Bristol Pullman. The reasoning behind the introduction of these units was basically to attract the businessman to rail travel; or perhaps to return to rail travel, for BR had by 1960 to be on a competitive footing with air transport. The new Metro- Cammell pullmans were prestigious trains, and turned out in a striking blue and white livery.

2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020.

Photo by Andrew Tucker. MODERNISATION TO PRIVATISATION, 1968 - 1997 by John Chalcraft – 8 May On the 8th May we once more welcomed John Chalcraft as our speaker. John has for many years published railway photographs and is well known for his knowledge on topics relating to our hobby. He began by informing us that there were now some 26,000 photographs on his website! From these, he had compiled a presentation entitled 'From Modernisation to Privatisation', covering a 30-year period from 1968 (the year of the Fraternity's founding) until 1997. His talk was accompanied by a couple of hundred illustrations, all of very high quality, which formed a most comprehensive review of the railway scene during a period when the railways of this country were subjected to great changes. We started with a few photos of the last steam locomotives at work on BR and then were treated to a review of the new motive power that appeared in the 20 years or so from the Modernisation Plan of 1955. John managed to illustrate nearly every class of diesel and electric locomotive that saw service in this period, from the diminutive '03' shunter up to the Class '56' 3,250 hp heavy freight locomotive - a total of over 50 types.

Colin Stone Visiting the SR courtesy of Ian Riley Engineering, and undoubted star of the Gala was "Black 5" No 44871. In this shot she is departing Corfe Castle with the demonstration Freight Train. Usually these freights contribute nothing to the railway's coffers, but on this occasion brake van rides were on offer at £5 per head. The Evolution of British Railways 1909-2009 Britain’s Railways and The Railway Study Association 1909-2009 previously published in 2009 as part of A Century of Change 2019 Introduction to Second Edition Mike Horne FCILT MIRO This book was originally published by the name of ‘A Century of Change’ to commemorate the centenary of the Railway Study Association (RSA) in 1909; the Association is now the Railway Study Forum of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Plenty has already been written about the railways of Britain. When the time came to celebrate the activities of the RSA, it occurred to this author that there was something missing. I felt that although it is self-evident that the railway today is very different to that of a century ago, the real point was that railways have been in a state of constant evolution, in part to respond to the changing conditions of the country and in part because of technological change. More importantly, this change will continue. Few people entering the in- dustry today can have much conception of what these changes will be, but change there will be: big changes too. What I wanted to highlight is the huge way the railway has altered, particularly in its technology and operational practices. This has happened, with great success, under diffi cult political and fi nancial conditions. Although the railway has lost much of its market share, the numbers of people carried today have recovered dramatically, and the fact this has been done on a much smaller system is an in- credible achievement that needs to be promoted.
