Hey guys! I hope you all are having a wonderful summer so far. Once again I have a trivia question for you, but this time I have changed the rules to make it a little more fair. Now you will have until August 15th* to submit an answer. Then I will randomly draw a name from all of the correct answers submitted to receive a small Circle K related prize. If you don't already know the answer, you can find it by visiting www.circlek.org or www.pnwcirclek.org, my reviewing your membership handbook, or by talking with another knowledgeable member. This issue's question has two parts so make sure you get both of them correct. Good luck!! What is the Circle K International Service Initiative? Things in our neck of the woods have been pretty low key this summer, but everyone has been keeping up on service. At UBC the club has been working with a local library to start a reading program, UVic Circle Kers have been working with their Kiwanis club on a number of different pro- jects (if you didn't know it, UVic won 2nd place in the Single Service Award at International Convention for a project they did with their sponsor- ing Kiwanis club. Much props to them!) and members of WWU's club have been volunteering at an ESL summer camp.

Planning fall rallies is going to begin in the near future. All crazy Peace Arch shinanigans will be documented in the POST, I can assure you.

International Convention 2003 It’s raining, it’s pouring, PNW’s soaring. Above the rest, ‘cause we’re the best, Pacific Northwest!

Our district cheer at opening ceremony signified the start of an exciting week at International Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana from July 2-6. More than 800 Cir- cle K and Key Club members joined together for the first combined Kiwanis family con- vention. The ceremony was shortly followed by a hip-hop dance. Of course, PNW did a great job of “backing our things up.” There was a wide range of workshops, from leadership and teambuilding to love and relationships. For example, one pick-up line to remember is— “Baby, my love for you is like diarrhea. I just can’t hold it in.” I even learned how to express “hot dog”, “popcorn”, and “what’s up?” in sign language (if interested in a demonstration, ask me at the next district conference). Candidates running for office caucused to the thirty districts for a total of six hours. All of them were well qualified. The hard part was choosing who was best fit to represent the International Board. A special congratulation goes to an avid Western Circle K member. Junior Stacey Grajczyk was elected to be one of the nine International Trus- tees. We know she will do a fabulous job next year. Dan Conrod was elected President of the organization. The Vice President position went to Ryan Toth. A dues increase of $7.00 was approved, increasing CKI dues to $25 per mem- ber. Other proposed amendments like changing “mankind” to “humankind” in the vision statement were denied due to budget constraints. Most people left on Sunday, but ten PNW Circle Kers stayed afterwards for the District Tour. We snapped pictures at the Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument, spent too much moolah at Circle Center mall, bonded with the turtles in Finding Nemo, dined in style (or not) at the Hard Rock Café, and regressed back to grade school at the Childrens’ Mu- seum. This year, I got to experience my first International Convention. Not only did I get to travel to a city I have never visited, I got to share it with my friends, both new and old. My week in Indy reenergized my spirit for service and fellowship, which is the essence of Circle K. I am already planning on attending next year’s con- vention in St. Louis and I expect even more representation from our dis- trict. Remember, no matter rain or shine, PNW is divine! ~Lulu Yu August—September Page 11
