The rising and popular fi eld of meditation research or contemplative science as it is called has a much larger impact on modern science and on our society as we assume at the fi rst glance. This is because meditation is not only a fascinating research object but also quite a challenge for our current scientifi c practice. The content of this volume, which summarizes presentations and discussions of an expert meeting in Freiburg, Germany, documents the many facets and implications of meditation research. In this introduction we will touch on a few of them. The fi rst challenge meditation research brings to the established scientifi c para- digm is that it is pointing to the neglect of experience . Our personal fi rst person experience, which, by the way, is our primary access to the world, cannot be shared with others directly. You cannot explain how chocolate tastes. In order to get the experience of the taste of chocolate others have to taste it themselves. Even worse, scientists are not even able to explain the phenomenal experience (qualia) using the current predominant approach in consciousness research (Chalmers 1995 ). The pragmatic solution taken so far was that personal experience was mainly devalued in comparison with third person approaches. And this scientifi c practice is also related to our cultural and social practice, where scientifi c beliefs often predominate personal experience. Classical examples are: Patients who have been told for many years that they cannot possibly have back pain because there is nothing to see on their x-ray; people having unwanted telepathic experiences being told that they are S. Walach having illusions and being advised to seek psychological help because no scientifi c explanation is available; or people being shut away into psychiatric hospitals for no other reason than for hearing voices. The investigation into the practice of meditation has made a decisive difference here. The debate about including fi rst person perspec- tive into science had started already at the end of the 1990s (Shear and Varela 1999 ), and successively we were able to demonstrate that this is a feasible position which is also deeply rooted in the history of our

In regard to Buddhism, however, there have been several attempts to show that the Buddha did not deny the exist- ence of the authentic åtman, the self.2 Only one of these attempts seems to have been taken seriously by scholars3; namely, the work of Kamaleswar Bhattacharya. His book on this subject, written in French, L’Åtman-Brahman dans le Bouddhisme ancien, was published in Paris in 1973; and an English translation of this work, The Åtman-Brahman in Ancient Buddhism, was published in 2015.4 It is here that he set forth his arguments for the existence of the Upanißadic åtman in early Buddhism.     CHAPTER 1 Buddhist Psychology Andrew Olendzki THEORY AND PRACTICE ince the subject of Buddhist psychology is largely an artificial construction, Smixing as it does a product of ancient India with a Western movement hardly a century and a half old, it might be helpful to say how these terms are being used here. If we were to take the term psychology literally as referring to “the study of the psyche,” and if “psyche” is understood in its earliest sense of “soul,” then it would seem strange indeed to unite this enterprise with a tradition that is per- haps best known for its challenge to the very notion of a soul. But most dictio- naries offer a parallel definition of psychology, “the science of mind and behavior,” and this is a subject to which Buddhist thought can make a significant contribution. It is, after all, a universal subject, and I think many of the methods employed by the introspective traditions of ancient India for the investigation of mind and behavior would qualify as scientific. So my intention in using the label Buddhist Psychology is to bring some of the insights, observations, and experi- ence from the Buddhist tradition to bear on the human body, mind, emotions, and behavior patterns as we tend to view them today. In doing so we are going to find a fair amount of convergence with modern psychology, but also some intriguing diversity. The Buddhist tradition itself, of course, is vast and has many layers to it. Al- though there are some doctrines that can be considered universal to all Buddhist schools,1 there are such significant shifts in the use of language and in back- ground assumptions that it is usually helpful to speak from one particular per- spective at a time.

    OBITUARIES CHESTER GORMAN Dies at 43 * Chester Gorman, an archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania who was known for his excavations in Thailand, died June 7, 1981 at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Sacramento, California. Gorman, who was 43, had been suffering from cancer for about two years. His illness prevented him from returning to Thailand in early 1981, as he had planned. He had been at the University of Pennsylvania since 1974 and was an associate professor of anthropology as well as associate curator-in-charge of the South and Southeast Asia section of the University Museum. Gorman and Pisit Charoenwongsa of Thailand were co-directors of the Ban Chiang project and in 1974 they excavated bronze items possibly dating back to 3600 B.C. That is about 600 years prior to the oldest bronze artifacts from the Middle East, where scholars have believed the Bronze Age began. Some scholars have said that Gorman's discovery altered some of their basic ideas about the history of technology and human development in general. "The tragic death of Chester Gorman just as he was completing the proof of one of the world's greatest archaeological discoveries is a blow not only to his friends and colleagues at the University Museum in Philadelphia, but to everyone in this field of research," said Dr. Froelich Rainey, emeritus professor of anthropology and former director of the University Museum. "His good friends on both sides of the Pacific will complete his work in the years to come but it will never be quite the same.

Piyatissa received the Prachina Pandit Diploma with awards from the department of education of Sri Lanka, a Bachelor of Arts General Degree from Vidyodaya University of Sri Lankan, a B.A. with honors from the University of London, and a Master of Arts from Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.. Service in Sri Lanka and Europe: Before coming to England as a Dhammaduta Monk, he was a teacher at the Bodhigupta Pirivena in Denagamuwa, Polgahawela, deputy principle at the Sri Gnaneswara Pirivena in Hunupitiya, in Colombo, deputy principle at the Government Central College in Polgahawela, and a teacher at the Ananda College, Colombo 10. His career in the field of education lasted over 21 years. During this time, he wrote and published many articles in newspapers and magazines in Sinhala and English. He won the title of “Radio Poet” in 1953, and the Pali essay prize in island‐wide contest held by the department of cultural affairs. Also, he acted as an examiner of books at the Education Publication Board of the department of education.
