    Landscape Character Area 13: THE BLACK MOUNTAINS LANDSCAPE CHARACTER AREA 13: THE BLACK MOUNTAINS Broad Landscape Type: MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS Description Location and Context This large LCA includes the highest land associated with the Black Mountains. It is located on the eastern edge of the National Park, and its character extends beyond the National Park boundary into England. To the north is the Wye Valley Foothills LCA, to the west the Eastern Usk Valley LCA and to the south Skirrid and Sugar Loaf LCA. Summary Description This LCA is largely defined by its topography: a series of broad ridges running north-south and separated by narrow, steep-sided valleys. It contains some of the highest land in the National Park- the summit of Waun Fach is over 800m above sea level. The higher moorlands are empty and remote, contrasting with the more pastoral and settled valleys between them. This is a rich archaeological landscape, with a concentration of surviving prehistoric features on the higher land, as well as the Medieval Llanthony Priory in the Vale of Ewyas. The valleys contain a network of ancient farms, fields, woodland and winding lanes. View south-west from Twmpa, showing the ridges of the Black Mountains Historical Development of the Landscape This landscape has been shaped over several millennia, with features surviving from many phases of human occupation. The earliest monuments are prehistoric cairns and barrows representing an extensive ritual landscape, and there are also early defensive sites including the prominent surviving Iron Age hillforts at Table Mountain. Surviving Medieval landscape features include Llanthony Priory, Cwmyoy church and many of the lanes and farms.

January Meeting Review: Helen Ball: “The Lords Tredegar in Breconshire”. The New Year got off to an excellent start, with Helen’s illustrated talk. She spoke of the history of the Morgan Family of Tredegar and their marriages to local families, their land holdings and political involvement in both the County of Breconshire and the town of Brecon. Through this medium, she gave the audience three valuable tips applicable to their own family research: 1. Draw up an historical timeline for your ancestors, so that their lives can be understood within a wider historical and social context 2. Trace every available reference to an event such as a death in order to find every bit of information about the individual and family context and finally 3. There is no such thing as infallibility in genealogy – double-check everything and if it still does not make sense, research afresh. The talk was very well received and many follow-up questions and comments were received from the floor. The sound recording and slideshow of Helen’s presentation are available on our website.     Annual 100 Mile Challenge Walk Saturday 23rd – Monday 25th May 2020 “Y 100 Sir Fynwy” Organised by South Wales LDWA The Background The Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) is an association of people with the common interest of walking long distances in rural, mountainous or moorland areas. The Association has 43 Groups in the UK and they organise social and challenge walks throughout the year including the flagship event, ‘The Hundred’. The South Wales Group is honoured to be organising “Y 100 Sir Fynwy” in 2020. The Route The route will start and finish at Chepstow Comprehensive School and follow a clockwise route around the county. It is 101 miles long with approximately 14,000 feet of ascent. Y 100 Sir Fynwy will visit Black Rock, Rogiet, Wentwood, Usk, The Bryn, Abergavenny, Cwmyoy, Llanthony, Longtown, Pandy, Treadam, Monmouth, Redbrook, Trellech and Tintern before returning to Chepstow. In order to identify where the checkpoints are and when they will be open please refer to the table on the reverse of this newsletter. The Entrants Whilst the entrants will pass through checkpoints, they will not stop to sleep and will walk through at least one full night. The fastest walkers and runners will complete the challenge in approximately 25 hours whilst the last person to return to Walk Headquarters will probably take close to 48 hours to complete the route. In the early stages of the event, the entrants will pass through the checkpoints within a short time period, but some of the checkpoints in the last 10 miles are open for nearly 24 hours.

'!I The Later Parliamentary Enclosures of South Wales By JOHN CHAPMAN Abstract Parliamentary enclosures under the I845 General Enclosure Act formed a substantial proportion of the total in South Wales. They were overwhelmingly of waste, and thus contributed to a net increase in the size of the existing holdings, in contrast to some early English enclosures. Though the number of allottees per enclosure was normally relatively small, few individuals received very large acreages, and this was reinforced by the pattern of purchases of sale allotments, with little evidence of large-scale buying by large landowners. Much of the newly-enclosed land appears to have undergone little improvement in the formal sense, but, at least in the view of contemporaries, sheep-farming became much more profitable when freed from the problems associated with common usage of the waste.     THE CHURCH BELLS OF MONMOUTHSHIRE. By ARTHUR WRIGHT, B.Sc. VIII. THE CHEPSTOW FOUNDRY. T h e craft of bell-founding appears to have been carried on at Chepstow in the Elizabethan period, if not earlier, and it is quite possible that some of the unassigned bells in the county, such as those of R.P. and G.P. (1598) may have their origin here. The foundry is, however, first mentioned in the will of Richard Cleyton (1630) husband of Margaret Cleyton, whose tomb, dated 1605, is in the chancel of Chepstow Church. He leaves money “to build a school-house at the end of the bell-liouse in Chepstow.’’ [This was in Welsh Street, and the school-house later became an inn, “The Three Cranes,” and was in 1936 the residence of a doctor.] In 1670 it belonged to Charles and George Green, who conveyed.it to John and Margaret Evans in that year. In 1674 it passed to Thomas and Joan Turbett, and their daughter, Joan Turbett, sold it to Evan Evans and Lydia his wife for £25 7s. Od., on July 5th, 1710. It remained in the Evans family until June 17th, 1772, when Mrs. Elizabeth Rudhall, widow, devisee of the wall of Elizabeth Evans of Chepstow, only daughter and heir-at-law of her father, William Evans of Chepstow; gentleman,1 conveyed the property to Thomas Davies. In 1785 it passed to William Williams, and in 1809 was conveyed by him and his wife to Richard Williams in trust for Lewis Williams, who in 1820 mortgaged it*for £2,000.
