St. Bridget Skenfrith St.Mary Llanfair St. Nicholas Grosmont St. Cadoc 1 The Parish Magazine for the St. Cadoc Grosmont Group of Parishes Llangattock St. Bridget Lingoed Skenfrith St.Mary Llanfair St. Nicholas Grosmont MARCH 2020 No.246 2 01981 541 307 07794 569 284 3 It is my great pleasure later in the month to be able to welcome the new Bish- op of Monmouth, Bishop Cherry Vann, to Grosmont, to meet the folk who live in the area of Abergavenny. She is to lead a service for all who wish to attend and socialise at a buffet lunch in the Nave after the service. It is an honour for us to hold this service as it is not a common occurrence for a small rural village to be hosting such an event. Unfortunately, the service could not happen in Abergavenny and Grosmont was the only available venue in the deanery that is big enough. I appreciate this has caused disruption for the Market planned for the same day, and I wish to offer my heartfelt thanks to the Market organisers and stall holders for seeking an alternative date. I also offer my apologies for the disruption, but unfortunately the date had been advertised before Grosmont became the venue. However, I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to come and meet our new Bishop, and hope you will enjoy the opportunity to be part of this historic gathering. Bishop Cherry has come to Monmouth Diocese with a vast experience of some of the big challenges facing our society today. Issues around equality and discrimination. Issues, that in some form, appear in the news on a daily basis. Personally, I think we are fortunate to have as our new spiritual leader someone who has obviously come to terms with these challenges in a quiet and respectful manner, and who can bring that wisdom to the role of leading a spiritually diverse community. Some would argue she is a somewhat controversial choice being firstly a woman, secondly in a loving same sex relationship and thirdly being from England. I found myself asking the question should any of all these facts exclude her from doing the job of Bishop and leading a life that can be held up as an example of good and godly living. I found the answer to be no. I believe God is able to, and does, use both men and women in his service, in the same way as he uses people regardless of their sexuality or the country of their birth. Sadly, for some both in and out of ‘the Church’, just one of these factors would have been a prohibition to her election, let alone all three! And even more sadly there are some who feel it is perfectly acceptable to voice their opposition in the most vitriolic and poisonous way, particularly on the web. In the word respectful I think we have found the root to the solution of many of the discriminatory challenges society faces. Yes, we are all entitled to hold an opinion, and we have a right to express our opinions, but surely the very least we should do is base our opinion on fact and not supposition, and express it in a manner that does not denigrate or dismiss who or how another person is. The church in Wales is being very courageous in taking a lead in the appointment of the first Bishop in a same sex relationship, and my hope and prayer is that we will all support her in her work of serving the people of Monmouth and not make a premature judgement on her abilities or effectiveness until we have evidence to base our opinion on. Then, if we wish to make comment let us do it in an appropriate and respectful way to those who need to hear, and not just throw our comments into the aether of like minded bloggers where our opinion is regurgitated by others but makes no positive difference to the situation. So, please come and join us in welcoming Bishop Cherry. You will find details further on in The Church Link. 4 STEVE LUMPKIN Specialises in Stonework, blockwork, lime pointing, brickwork and plastering Can also undertake tiling, patios and more …. In my work as a florist I look forward to the arrival of the Spring blooms and the freshness and promise that they signify. As I write this (in early Feb), it’s blowing a gale outside and the rain is lashing down, so a little clump of bright daffodils that are growing just outside the window is a very cheerful sight! I love flowers and gardening and by the time that you read this, I hope to have begun making more of a garden at our new home and perhaps to have joined the Gardening Club for inspiration. Looking out now at the grey expanse of concrete and crazy paving, I must admit that I am somewhat daunted– but ever hopeful. Happy Spring! The Old Post Office Abergavenny NP7 8PL £550,000 .0 A SYMPATHETICALLY RESTORED 5/6 BEDROOMED STONE BUILT HOUSE OCCUPYING A CENTRE OF VILLAGE SETTING WITHIN EASY COMMUTING OF ABERGAVENNY, MONMOUTH AND HEREFORD, YET ONLY MINUTES AWAY FROM A WELL REGARDED PRIMARY SCHOOL. Particulars. The village of Cross Ash is located about midway between the two market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth, both having good shopping facilities, the latter perhaps better known for its public schools. The former has a well used rail link with connection to Newport, Cardiff and Hereford and stations North. While the village retains its historic layout, it does pride itself in a modern primary school which lies a few minutes walk away, which draws its pupils in from quite a wide area. The community is also served by an Inn. The Old Post Office ceased to trade early in this century having commenced about 100 years earlier when it supplied the main essentials to this community and anyone visiting the wheel wrights opposite! Our Client/Vendors purchased the property in 2005/2006 and in about a year later installed uPVC double glazing virtually throughout. Since then they have capped off all the chimneys, have redecorated the house, tidied the outbuildings which according to information passed to our Clients, had at an earlier date Planning Consent to be used as an annex, but which has subsequently expired! The accommodation which is in our opinion well presented is ideal as a multi generation house, or even as a Bed and Breakfast establishment (subject to Planning Consent), it affords the following:- 'THE BREAD OVEN' 15' 8'' x 11' 4'' (4.77m x 3.45m) overall, now used as an Entrance Hall, providing for the storage of coats, footwear etc.
