This session will be devoted to the cultural impact of films that explore Jewish and Holocaust subjects. Hosted in cooperation with the Warsaw Jewish Film Festival, the webinar will feature two universally acclaimed filmmakers Agnieszka Holland (In Darkness) and Roberta Grossman (Who Will Write Our History). For over a century, films have influenced and shaped public opinion about historical events and social issues. Our speakers will share their experiences as creators of influential films particularly in the context of the complexities of the Polish Jewish narrative. They’ll discuss what motivated them to take up the camera and what they hope their films bring to the public forum. Her first film, Provincial Actors — a staple of Polish "cinema of moral unrest" — earned her the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980. Later, facing persecution from the Communist government, Agnieszka Holland emigrated to France and continued her work on groundbreaking movies, such as Europa, Europa, which won a Golden Globe in 1990. She also received three Academy Award nominations for Angry Harvest, Europa Europa, and In Darkness, a film about a Catholic man from Lwów who saved Jews hiding in sewers during the Holocaust. Holland’s body of work often reflects her Jewish and Catholic roots, dealing with issues of faith, mysticism, and human choices. Roberta Grossman is an internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Through insightful and visually captivating movies, she explores important issues of Jewish history and social justice. Roberta’s credits include, among others, Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh (2008), Hava Nagila: The Movie (2012), Above and Beyond (2015) and Seeing Allred (2018). Her 2018 film Who Will Write Our History — executive produced by Nancy Spielberg — became an international box office hit in the documentary genre. Roberta Grossman recently received the Taube Philanthropies Jewish Peoplehood Award for her contributions to global Jewish culture. Citation: Jakub Lysiak.
