•INTRODUCTORY RITES•

Prelude Prelude on ‘Down Ampney’ Henry George Ley (1887-1962) a setting of the Come Down, O Love Divine (The Evening Hymn, page 5 of this booklet)

Ralph Vaughan Williams took inspiration from his birthplace at the Old Vicarage in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, England, when he composed and named his hymn-tune DOWN AMPNEY. It was published anonymously in , the 1906 landmark of which Vaughan Williams was editor, along with Percy Dearmer, a priest, liturgist, and fellow Englishman.

The hymn text comes from the Catholic Italian hymn, Discendi, amor santo, written by the 15th Century mystic Bianco da Siena. The opening phrase of the hymn is sung as an (‘Come down, O love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing’). The original is in the form of a laude, a sacred song written in the vernacular - hence, Italian, not Latin. It was translated into English in 1867 by R.F. Littledale for The People’s Hymnal.

“No soul can guess Love’s grace, Till it become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.”

Cantor intones part one of verse: • THE WORD OF GOD • A reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 We were all baptized into one body. Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Lector: The word of the Lord. Assembly: Thanks be to God.

O beautiful morn when we gather in prayer, O beautiful morn when the rushing of wind sweeps Our silent hearts waiting God’s word, Upon us from heaven’s gate. A rushing of wind comes, a new breath of air, The Spirit of God is a gift e’er renewing Our dreams now a vision stirred. For those who believe and wait. O beautiful morng when the angels are singing With tongues of God’s flaming powe’r. From earth unto heaven our hearts now are ringing The coming of God’s own hour! -Henrick Ibsen (1828-1906) tr. and new text by Rev.
