Canterbury Car Club Inc From the desk of Mark Wederell, General Manager… As we head towards the Christmas/New Year period, activity at the track is slowing down. Through the month of November and December we have scheduled six of the ten quiet weekend days we must now have over the October 31st to March 31st period. We also can have no activity on the track over the Christmas/New Year holiday period. It’s our first year under the new rules and to date, we are manging it incredibly well. We’ve had to schedule the odd Friday without a test day, so that we don’t run out of test days when we need them, but we’ve done that around days when there are no race events on our circuit. We still have the odd person turn up to test when we’ve scheduled a test day off, so it pays to check our website or phone the office. We schedule these days’ months in advance, so there is plenty of notice for those people that take the time to check. I’ve just come back from a week away on the Silver Fern Rally where I was part of a finish crew with Allan Coker and Nic Jones. It was a fun and dusty week travelling around the lower half of the South Island. What I enjoyed the most, was the scenery. You get sent to roads that you just wouldn’t go down when you stick to the main highways. I was lucky enough to be on the flying finish line of all the stages we did. I’d get to go up to the finish line 30-40 minutes before the rally cars came through. Just sitting out in the middle of paradise all on my own, enjoying the peace and quiet and admiring the view…… absolutely awesome………… then the silence was broken by the sounds of a BDA Escort coming in the distance, simply perfect! The track will be closed from Friday 23rd December, just a reminder that Friday 23rd will not be open for testing. We reopen on Wednesday 4th January, with a test day for race cars and race bikes on Thursday, as the NZ Motorcycle Grand Prix starts on Friday 6th. The following week we have the Motorsport Championship round, with TRS competing for the Lady Wigram Trophy. For those of you wanting to test your cars before the SKOPE Classic, these are the only days available before the event: Thursday 5th January Friday 20th January Friday 27th January Friday 3rd February is the official practice day for the event We do not want to offend anyone, so please do not ask to test outside of these dates, as we won’t be able to accommodate you. Remember; we now operate under a completely new set of rules and the risk of letting race cars test outside of these dates, puts future test days in jeopardy. There will be absolutely no chance of anyone taking a race car around the track on Thursday 2nd February. I don’t want to sound like a grumpy old man, but it’s my job to make sure we comply with the noise rules, it’s no longer ok for individuals to think they are more important than other members and assume it’s their right to test outside of our test days. Things have changed as a result of the Environment Court Decision and we need everyone to respectPage 4 the new rules and how we manage our time on the track. Canterbury Car Club Inc By the time you read this bulletin, we should have installed a new set of start lights, along with the control system and pit exit lights. Early next year, we will be installing trackside lights at every flag point. This is a project I have wanted to see happen from the day I started, but with bucket loads of cash being spent on lawyers and experts throughout the Environment Court Hearing, it had to be put on hold. With that all behind us, we can start to look to the future and the Management Committee’s first big project to be approved is the trackside lights. I am really excited knowing that these are going to be installed, it’s a huge step forward in track safety and I’m sure will be appreciated by all of you who race. Thank you to all the volunteers for helping us run many successful events throughout 2016, also thank you to the Management Committee for all their support and guidance over the year and a special thank you to Noela, Chris, Bryce, Paul and Doug for all their hard work and support, also thanks to Vanessa for all her hard work as the Volunteer Coordinator and thank you to Tony for all the great photo’s he has taken over the year. This will be the December and January edition of Adrenaline, the next one will be published after the SKOPE Classic. On behalf of the Canterbury Car Club Management Committee, I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and enjoyable new year. Page 6 AVAILABLE at the Office now. Canterbury Car Club Inc CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE? It is a bit of a long shot, but thought I would contact you. In 1967 I qualified in Auckland for the Teenage Better Driving Contest national finals in New Brighton. On my return to Auckland on the train, my camera and all my pictures of the event was lost. In 1969 I went to work in Australia then in 1970 continued my OE through Canada. Meeting and marrying a Canadian girl, has me living in BC ever since. Although lots of trips to NZ to see my parents, who are now both gone. Over the years I have unsuccessfully tried looking for a connection to see if I could recapture any images of the event. If you are able to help or direct me to some one who might be able to help, I appreciate in advance anything you can do. Growing up in the North Island trips to the South Island were not frequent, although I was in Christchurch before all the current ground movement (http:// www3.telus.net/nowland/site/photo/body/06-nz-christchurch-01.htm). I looked through my pictures and have 450 of Christchurch and surrounding area, I could sent them through ‘wetransfer’ if you or anybody would like them for personal use. If anyone wants them for commercial use, I just need to hear from them so I could understand how they were going to use them so I could provide them with a letter for that use. I can only imagine the devastation and hope all are coping well with the conditions. Described by the prestigious and authoritative MotorSport magazine as “The versatile Michael Lyons”, the 25-year-old Englishman won this year’s FIA title with two race victories in the final round at Spain’s Jarama circuit in October. Driving the 1977 Hesketh 308E that used to take the FIA title, Lyons is seen by many as the odds-on favourite to claim the inaugural Taupo Historic GP Trophy on 28/29 January. Awarded to the winner of the Race of Champions Revival that will wind-up the Sunday programme on 29 January, the Taupo Historic GP is set to become an annual fixture on the international historic motor racing calendar. The Race of Champions Revival re-creates the fascinating battles between the F1 and F5000 brigades that were held annually at England’s Brands Hatch circuit in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While the F1s are lighter (575kg from 1973) and with lower centres of gravity, slightly wieldier in the corners, the larger and torquier Chevrolet V8 engines of the slightly heavier F5000s (600kg- plus by the mid-1970s) may have the edge onto the two long straights at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park.
