From the desk of Mark Wederell, General Manager… As we head towards the Christmas/New Year period, activity at the track is slowing down. Through the month of November and December we have scheduled six of the ten quiet weekend days we must now have over the October 31st to March 31st period. We also can have no activity on the track over the Christmas/New Year holiday period. It’s our first year under the new rules and to date, we are manging it incredibly well. We’ve had to schedule the odd Friday without a test day, so that we don’t run out of test days when we need them, but we’ve done that around days when there are no race events on our circuit. We still have the odd person turn up to test when we’ve scheduled a test day off, so it pays to check our website or phone the office. We schedule these days’ months in advance, so there is plenty of notice for those people that take the time to check.

I’ve just come back from a week away on the Silver Fern Rally where I was part of a finish crew with Allan Coker and Nic Jones. It was a fun and dusty week travelling around the lower half of the South Island. What I enjoyed the most, was the scenery. You get sent to roads that you just wouldn’t go down when you stick to the main highways. I was lucky enough to be on the flying finish line of all the stages we did. I’d get to go up to the finish line 3040 minutes before the rally cars came through. Just sitting out in the middle of paradise all on my own, enjoying the peace and quiet and admiring the view…… absolutely awesome………… then the silence was broken by the sounds of a BDA Escort coming in the distance, simply perfect!

The track will be closed from Friday 23rd December, just a reminder that Friday 23rd will not be open for testing. We reopen on Wednesday 4th January, with a test day for race cars and race bikes on Thursday, as the NZ Motorcycle Grand Prix starts on Friday 6th. The following week we have the Motorsport Championship round, with TRS competing for the Lady Wigram Trophy.

For those of you wanting to test your cars before the SKOPE Classic, these are the only days available before the event: Thursday 5th January Friday 20th January Friday 27th January Friday 3rd February is the official practice day for the event

We do not want to offend anyone, so please do not ask to test outside of these dates, as we won’t be able to accommodate you. Remember; we now operate under a completely new set of rules and the risk of letting race cars test outside of these dates, puts future test days in jeopardy. There will be absolutely no chance of anyone taking a race car around the track on Thursday 2nd February. I don’t want to sound like a grumpy old man, but it’s my job to make sure we comply with the noise rules, it’s no longer ok for individuals to think they are more important than other members and assume it’s their right to test outside of our test days. Things have changed as a result of the Environment Court Decision and we need everyone to respectPage 4 the new rules and how we manage our time on the track. Canterbury Car Club Inc

By the time you read this bulletin, we should have installed a new set of start lights, along with the control system and pit exit lights. Early next year, we will be installing trackside lights at every flag point. This is a project I have wanted to see happen from the day I started, but with bucket loads of cash being spent on lawyers and experts throughout the Environment Court Hearing, it had to be put on hold. With that all behind us, we can start to look to the future and the Management Committee’s first big project to be approved is the trackside lights. I am really excited knowing that these are going to be installed, it’s a huge step forward in track safety and I’m sure will be appreciated by all of you who race.

Thank you to all the volunteers for helping us run many successful events throughout 2016, also thank you to the Management Committee for all their support and guidance over the year and a special thank you to Noela, Chris, Bryce, Paul and Doug for all their hard work and support, also thanks to Vanessa for all her hard work as the Volunteer Coordinator and thank you to Tony for all the great photo’s he has taken over the year.

This will be the December and January edition of Adrenaline, the next one will be published after the SKOPE Classic. On behalf of the Canterbury Car Club Management Committee, I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and enjoyable new year.

Great Christmas present for Hubby, Father, Son, Grandad!!

Page 6 AVAILABLE at the Office now. Canterbury Car Club Inc CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE?

It is a bit of a long shot, but thought I would contact you.

In 1967 I qualified in Auckland for the Teenage Better Driving Contest national finals in New Brighton. On my return to Auckland on the train, my camera and all my pictures of the event was lost. In 1969 I went to work in Australia then in 1970 continued my OE through Canada. Meeting and marrying a Canadian girl, has me living in BC ever since. Although lots of trips to NZ to see my parents, who are now both gone.

Over the years I have unsuccessfully tried looking for a connection to see if I could recapture any images of the event. If you are able to help or direct me to some one who might be able to help, I appreciate in advance anything you can do.

Growing up in the North Island trips to the South Island were not frequent, although I was in Christchurch before all the current ground movement (http:// www3.telus.net/nowland/site/photo/body/06nzchristchurch01.htm). . I looked through my pictures and have 450 of Christchurch and surrounding area, I could sent them through ‘wetransfer’ if you or anybody would like them for personal use. If anyone wants them for commercial use, I just need to hear from them so I could understand how they were going to use them so I could provide them with a letter for that use.

I can only imagine the devastation and hope all are coping well with the conditions.

Regards Robert

2016 FIA MASTERS HISTORIC F1 CHAMPION TO RACE IN TAUPO HISTORIC GP

The recentlycrowned FIA Masters Historic F1 Champion, Englishman Michael Lyons, headsup the first ever visit by Historic Formula One cars to Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in January. Described by the prestigious and authoritative MotorSport magazine as “The versatile Michael Lyons”, the 25yearold Englishman won this year’s FIA title with two race victories in the final round at Spain’s Jarama circuit in October. Driving the 1977 Hesketh 308E that used to take the FIA title, Lyons is seen by many as the oddson favourite to claim the inaugural Taupo Historic GP Trophy on 28/29 January. Awarded to the winner of the Race of Champions Revival that will windup the Sunday programme on 29 January, the Taupo Historic GP is set to become an annual fixture on the international historic motor racing calendar. The Race of Champions Revival recreates the fascinating battles between the F1 and F5000 brigades that were held annually at England’s Brands Hatch circuit in the late 1960s and early 1970s. While the F1s are lighter (575kg from 1973) and with lower centres of gravity, slightly wieldier in the corners, the larger and torquier Chevrolet V8 engines of the slightly heavier F5000s (600kg plus by the mid1970s) may have the edge onto the two long straights at Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park. It was at Brands Hatch on March 18 1973, a day that F1 still playsdown, that double European F5000 and later champion, Englishman Peter Gethin, did the unthinkable, beating the F1 grandées to win the Race of Champions in an F5000 Chevron B24. Briton Greg Thornton, the 2013 FIA Masters Historic F1 champion, is bringing that very car to Taupo and no doubt will hope to emulate the historic victory of his countryman. However, he will first have to overcome Michael Lyons and his Hesketh F1. With an astonishing race win average of 28 percent and podium average approaching 50 percent, Lyons has enjoyed success in an impressively long list of cars since his racing debut in 2007 – Historic Formula Ford, Formula Renault, British, Spanish and Italian GT, FIA and Blancpain GT3, Le Mans GTE, , European Le Mans LMP2, Classic Group C Sports Cars, Le Mans Legends, and of course, Masters Historic Formula One.

Achieving such a record requires versatility and the ability to jump from one type of car to another and back again on the same day. By way of example, in July this year, Lyons won four races in one weekend at Brands Hatch hopping between a Super Touring Volvo S40 and an F1 Surtees, then did the Le Mans Classic in a 3.5 litre Gebhart DFR, and finished off the month by contesting the Spa 24 Hours in Belgium. In the previous year’s Spa 24 Hours, after spending his opening stint fighting with Kiwi, Shane van Gisbergen, Lyons’ race was brought to a premature halt after a mistake by one of his codrivers at the 6 hour mark. “I got a phone call from my dad asking what’s going on. I told him we were out and he said: ‘Well, Page 8 Canterbury Car Club Inc do you want to drive the Group C [Le Mans sports car] at Silverstone tomorrow?’ So I did…”. Versatile indeed. A regular at the biannual Monaco Historic Grand Prix, Lyons has driven all the F1 cars that will run at Taupo in January under the Lyons Racing banner including the McLaren M26 and Surtees TS9 being brought out to NZ for the summer by father Frank and mother Judy. “The Surtees is like an old friend,” says the youngest member of the Lyons family. “I did Monaco with it a few years ago but it’s usually my mum’s car so it was nice to have a bit of crack in it. The McLaren is a very special car, but I never seem to have any luck in it.” “The Hesketh (308E) is probably my favourite to drive,' though. I’m really looking forward to seeing what it can do around Taupo.“ The Volvo S40 Super Touring driven with such success by Lyons at Brands Hatch in July is owned by Christchurch’s Lindsay O’Donnell and is also expected to appear at the Taupo Historic GP meeting in the four races being held over the weekend for Historic Touring Races from the 19801994 era. “The Super Touring cars are incredibly well developed” says Lyons. “Although they are frontwheeldrive, the base impression of the car is quite similar to a modern GT car. The damping is fantastic, they have proper brakes and a bit of downforce. It will be great to see them on the Taupo circuit for the first ever time.”

Recentlycrowned FIA Masters Historic F1 Champion, Englishman Michael Lyons, in the 1977 Hesketh 308E he will drive at the Race of Champions Revival meeting at Taupo's Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park on Sunday 29 January. Page 9 Canterbury Car Club Inc Ramblings From The Captains Chair…..

Report from the Club Captain

Where has the year gone? Hard to believe we are already in December and waiting for the jolly fat man to come down the chimney . Unfortunately I’m starting to disbelieve in his existence as every year I keep writing to him asking for more race car parts (can never have too many!!) but they never seem to come, one year I even tried my hardest to be good and still nothing, maybe this year?

November was a quite month for Motorsport on track with only one speed event and the running of the Oldtimers race day. I didn’t make it to the latter but have been told there was a better than expected turn out which is good news.

We have a busy December which by the time you read this will be will be well through, hopefully everyone gets a good day or two of motorsport in before the Xmas break. Our next Club race day isn’t till March but we have plenty of speed events and with the Tier 1 meeting in January including OSCA and the SKOPE Classic in early February there will still be plenty to do and see!

At the last Drift South day we decided to jack all cars during auditing and have a quick check over suspension systems, this is something that will end up being more common place at events now the auditing team is run out of the FMRDC sheds and we have nice new super low heavy duty jacks. It was surprising how many cars had a little (or a lot) of play in suspension joints, which is a good reminder to all that a day on the circuit is hard on the cars so regular checks of these components is a must.

Wishing you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year, Travel safe and looking forward to catching up in 2017

see you at the Church of Motorsport Jason S #22 Club Captain.

A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce and asked, "What are the grounds for your divorce?" "About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property with a stream running by." "No," he said, "I mean what is the foundation of this case?" "It is made of concrete, brick, and mortar," she responded. "I mean," he continued, "what are your relations like?" "I have an aunt and uncle and 12 cousins living here in town, as well as my husband's parents." The judge took a deep breath and asked, "Do you have a real grudge?" "No, we have a twocar carport and have never really needed one 'cuz we don't have a car." "Please," he tried again, "is there any infidelity in your marriage?" "Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don't necessarily like the music all that hip hop and rap tap but we can't seem to do anything about it." "Ma'am, does your husband ever beat you up?" "Yes, he gets up every morning before I do and makes the coffee." The judge asked, "Is your husband a nagger?" "Oh, hell no, he's as white as you and me!" Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, "Lady, why in hell do you want a divorce? "Oh, I don't want a divorce," she replied. "I've never wanted a divorce. My husband does. The damn fool says he can't communicate with me."

On a bitterly cold winter morning a husband and wife in Dublin were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snow ploughs can get through". So the good wife went out and moved her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snow ploughs can get through". The good wife went out and moved her car again. The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park...." Then the electric power went out. The good wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, "I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow ploughs can get through?" Then with the love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married to blondes exhibit, the husband replied, "Why don't you just leave the bloody car in the garage this time." Stella year for Kiwis on the international stage It’s has been a top year for Kiwi drivers on the international stage in 2016. We have had Kiwi drivers competing in the Verizon IndyCar Series, the Virgin Australia Supercars Champion- ship, the FIA World Rally Championship, the FIA World Endurance Championship, GP2 Series, FIA European F3 Championship, Super GT, various other GT categories including the Blancpain Endurance Series and a number of Porsche competition, world rounds and international kartsport in Europe and America.

Hayden Paddon’s maiden win at Rally Argentina in his first full WRC season is right up there. This included nine top five finishes in 13 different WRC events. After ten years of competing in Australia, Shane van Gisbergen won the Virgin Australia Supercars Champion- ship with fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin third.. With van Gisbergen now at Red Bull Racing Australia, it will be no surprise to see more championship titles. It will also be interesting to see McLaughlin perform with his new Team Penske in 2017 after switching from GRM.

While Nick Cassidy won the second FIA European Formula 3 race at Zandvoort, he rates his second place in the Super GT 1000km round at Suzuka as the highlight of his career so far. Cassidy was firmly focussed on the Japanese series while the F3 single seater racing was merely more seat time for him. Given this, a F3 win in Europe and seven other podium placings is no mean feat. We now wait to see his next career move which will probably be in Asia and could well involve Super Formula, one of the quickest single seater catego- ries. Cassidy successfully tested in the series in November but he may well be retained by the Lexus factory team in Super GT for another season.

2015 World Endurance Championship Brendon Hartley had an uncertain start to his 2016 title defence with team mates Mark Webber and Timo Bernhard. It took until the fourth of nine rounds before the team won. They then went on to win three in a row and even a fourth win in Shanghai couldn’t secure them the drivers title which went to their #2 sister car driven by Marc Lieb, Neel Jani and Romain Dumas. Their only win came at the 24 Hours of Le Mans but it was a round that offered double points. With Mark Webber retiring we will see two Kiwis in the same Porsche LMP1 team with joining Hartley for the 2017 season. This is going to be very exciting to follow, and great history making stuff..

We have had a good number of kartsport drivers travelling to Australia, the Americas’ and competing in Europe. Daniel Bray finished third overall in the US SKUSA Pro Tour S1 Pro Class, a category he has previously won. Christchurch’s Matthew Hamilton successfully defended his S1 stock moto class title at this year's big Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix kart street race meeting in California. Marcus Armstrong has had a difficult season in Europe but made the final of the World KZ Champs in Sweden. He now returns to NZ and will compete in the 2017 Racing Series. This is a championship we look forward to with the return of last season’s champion Lando Norris, runner up Jehan Daruvala, Brazilian Pedro Piquet and now the announcement that Ferdinand Habsburg will compete for his third consecutive season. This is top talent for Armstrong to gauge where he is at as he contemplates returning to Europe to compete this time in a top single seater category in 2017.

In drifting Mad Mike Whiddett won the Ebisu round of the Formula Drift World Series, winning against some of the best Japanese drivers on their home turf. So plenty to be proud of in 2016 and plenty to look forward to in 2017 with a good mix of Kiwi drivers competing across the globe in many motorsport categories.

With Christmas around the corner it was time to see out the last DriftSouth meet of 2016 with round 2 taking place November 26. With the much anticipated D1NZ stadium opening round looming it was a chance for a number of our local lads to shake out the cobwebs or any midseason gremlins that may have moved in before heading down to appear on the big stage. With a new season comes a new format. In place of qualifying, organisers have come up with a random draw 3 battle format seeing judges split focus on a lead and chase performance for each driver to get maximum seeding points. Bringing its own bonus and pitfalls to drivers under pressure. Ranking positions then lead to a standard tree style elimination to decide overall placings. Mitch Gibbs was seen with a tidy wide body S15 dressed to impress. Using the round to diagnose a few issues with a surge tank not playing ball. Such issues led to an off at the last corner during the top 8 battle, after a split rerun with Sheldon Kneale, and bail out during the 2nd pass. Former DS champion Joel Counter is stepping down this season to chase bigger fish in the pond, while other newcomers make the jump to the ProDrift seat from Development. We can now claim our own Female face to the series with Anna Kempt competing a number of Drift Schools, tweaking that knowledge and impressing judges with her first appearance at Rnd1. Unfortunately not to be the case for her second appearance, with steering issues bringing an early end to her day out before a battle was run. Round 1 winner Callum Gooding (AE86) was thrown into the shark tank with Josh ‘Snoop’ McMillan, and like a little car that could he peddled his heart out. Josh with the advantage held off Callum with creating a huge power gap. Josh also took out best chase award, all over the tail of Shannon Hall, power advantage and the infamous Btrack rise switch thrusting him forward to a near miss and off with need to avoid incident. Still stoked with the occurrence Page 16 Canterbury Car Club Inc

Josh drove off, later securing 3rd place with a large lead on Sheldon Kneale. Top spot for the round (and top seeding) went to the West Coasts’ man of few words Dan Currie. The now finely tuned 2JZ powered Silvia making his way through the tree with the need to often lift off during his chases, beating newcomer Scott Welsh, Sheldon Kneale and Shannon Hall to secure his placing. Shannon battling with grip, or lack of, sliding out on the last corner to slot into 2nd. Results for the round a pleasing mirror of the seeding results paying tribute to the new formats hoped outcome. Goodbye 2016! That leads us into January 28th 2017 for the 3rd round. We again thank everyone for their continued support. And wish everyone an awesome holiday season, DS Team.

The Memorial Trophy Navigation Rally CCC Round 5

Round 5 – The November Memorial Trophy Navigation Rally It was a wet day for the organisers again but the nights are lighter longer, except when there is torrential rain and we drove past 2 checks and cost us a third and our crew of Michael, Annie and myself were back in 5th.

Dwight and Peter F had a better run in the Mini and they commented – “With nothing out of the ordinary in the CCC Memorial Navigation Rally’s SR’s other than some extra check codes we left The Talbot and headed off down the Old West Coast Road. Once we passed the ODO the overriding instruction telling us to go left at crossroads took effect. The overriding instruction along with the extra check codes turned what seemed to be a straightforward trial into something busier. The overriding instruction kept us on our toes for the half dozen instructions it was in force. After a tour through the well trialed roads of rural West Melton we went for a dizzying blat around the new roundabouts at the Waterloo Road Business Park before returning to The Talbot for desserts, hot chocolates and results.

Thanks to Chris and Mark for an enjoyable Navigational Rally with a bit of everything and a lot of roundabouts!” Winners, Peter and Lyndall Monro, contribute: Brilliant fun, well organised. Thanks team.

Next event is the Santa Lee Christmas Tree Navigation Rally on December 15th starting at the Talbot @ Yaldhurst, but run around the ? area. DON’T FORGET – Dinner at 6pm and 30 booked in @ $20 each – Entry is $10 for the car and a $6 gift per person.

21st November 2016 Report 14 – Final Results

IT RAINED ON AUTOSPORT’S PARADE, well Autocross paddock and that was the end of the Interclub series for 2016. The Dave McCahon Trophy has moved into the custody of Canterbury Car Club for the next 12 months.

The planning of the 2017 series is now underway and the dates will be notified as soon as confirmed.

It would be great to see 5 plus competitors from each club at each of the 2017 events. What a competition it would be.

The Lupp Cup for Navigation Rallies, Round 4 had a RATEC winner but Canterbury took 24 points to RATEC’s 21. This means that Canterbury wins by 20 points for 2016. Next year may see some changes designed to tighten up the Lupp Cup points structure and the results. More news on that if it comes to fruition. Meanwhile, practice is available every 3rd Thursday starting at the Talbot @ Yaldhurst at 7pm. Navigation Rallies also offers members of other clubs the opportunity to hone their night driving skills and improve the communications between driver and navigator.
