THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY and MISSION STATEMENT The International School of Luxembourg (ISL) is an independent, non-profit, university-preparatory day school situated in the City of Luxembourg, capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. ISL offers a quality English-language education for children of both international and local families living in Luxembourg and the surrounding area. The school is divided into two divisions of similar size: the Lower School and the Upper School which includes Middle School and High School sections. Total school enrolment is 1118 with 305 students in the High School (Grades 9-12). Forty-nine nationalities are found in the student population and the majority of students come from Continental Europe. The with the largest enrolment are the USA (16%), the UK (12%), Sweden and Luxembourg (both 7%), Italy (6%). The remaining 52% of the students come from 44 other countries throughout the rest of the world. ISL’s mission is to provide an outstanding education in a caring international environment, inspiring all our students to reach their true potential and to act as responsible participants in a global society.

ACCREDITATION AND MEMBERSHIPS ISL is accredited by the Council of International Schools and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Memberships are held in the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), and the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC).

SCHOOL CALENDAR The academic year runs from late August to late June and is divided into three trimesters. - 1st Trimester: 29 August-30 November, 2nd Trimester: 3 December-8 March, 3rd Trimester: 11 March-28 June. - High School Graduation date: 8 June 2013.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS – DIPLOMAS AWARDED ISL offers a standards-based university preparatory curriculum leading to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or IB Diploma Courses and the ISL High School Diploma.

International Baccalaureate Diploma The objectives of the IB are to provide students with a balanced education, to facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding through a shared academic experience. The International Baccalaureate is a two-year program offered in Grades 11-12 which consists of six subjects, an extended essay, a Theory of Knowledge course, and a Creativity, Action and Service component. The successful completion of all these requirements results in the IB Diploma, which is an internationally recognized credential for university entrance.

IB Diploma Courses Students who do not opt for the full IB Diploma may elect to sit IB examinations for selected subjects. They are awarded a grade based on their level of achievement for each subject taken.

ISL High School Diploma All students must earn a minimum of 20 credits which include the following subjects: English: 4, Social Studies: 3, Mathematics: 3, Science: 3, Modern Languages: 3, other subjects: 4. Each credit comprises the successful completion of a full year’s course. Community service is also required for graduation to include a minimum of 15 hours in each grade 9 to 12.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE & CLASS RANK POLICY Due to the transient nature of the ISL community and diversity of educational backgrounds of students entering the school during the high school years, class rank and cumulative grade point averages (GPA) are not computed at ISL.

ISL GRADING SYSTEM The ISL grading system complies with the assessment scheme of the criterion-referenced International Baccalaureate (IB) whereby student performance is measured against specific learning outcomes. IB assessments are scored from 7 (excellent) to 1 (very poor). Students enroll in courses for the full school year and academic achievement is evaluated on a trimester basis in November, March and June. Academic credit for high school diploma purposes is granted for all courses in which the student’s achievement level ranges from 3 to 7. No credit is awarded for grades of 1 or 2. Grades are not weighted.

Grade Student’s Performance 7 Excellent 6 Very Good 5 Good 4 Satisfactory 3 Mediocre 2 Poor (failing) 1 Very poor (failing)
