Predappio (porll) larch 3» 1962 MUSSOLINI *3 SOT »VKDS SISTER OP SOPHIA LORES Romano Mussolini, Jazz-playing youngest son of the late Italian dictator, and Maria Soicolone, lovely sister ef actress Sophia Loren, were married Saturday in Predappio, the little north Italian town, where Mussolini was born. The ceremony in St* Anthony's church, not far from where Benito Mussolini is buried, brought tears to fcany a die-hard Fascist eye. The crush at the wedding became so great at one point that young Mussolini almost fainted* His best man and another attendant eupported him, and a doctor gave him a stimulant by injection* Hot all of the guests - invited and sms**#A uninvited - could crowd Inside the church* Hundreds stood outside under gray skies* Most of them were Fascist sympathizers, a good many members of the Fascist Social Movement (MSI) Party. Pino Romualdi, an MSI deputy, served as Romano*s best man. For Fascist old-timers who gathered there, It was a nostalgic event. For Romano, now 33 years old, and his 23-year*»o Id-bride, it was a day of heady limelight and few, if any, backward glances. Romano was only 7 years old when his older brothers Vlttorlo and Bruno were dropping bombs in the Ethiopian desert against the troops of Bnperor Halle Selaeaie. Vittorio was not among those present at Romano's wedding* He was attending the wedding of his own daughter Adrla in Ghana. Bruno was killed in a Wirld War II plane crash. Bdda Clsno, sister of Romano, was reported on a cruise to India. Edda was the wife of Count Galeazzo Ciano, Benito lussolinl1s Foreign Minister. He was executed on orders of Mussolini during World War II. Romano's 31-year-old sister, Anna Maria, and his mother, Donna Raohele, who makes her home at nearby Forll, were present. In the immediate postwar years, the three had lived in quasi-seelusion on the island of lochia. Today that was all over. Hundreds of photographers were present to flash thousands of pictures. There were bsnked flowers on the altar of the church, where Msgr. Giuseppe Bonacini, Bishop of Bertinoro, officiated. By the time Romano arrived with his mother, the throng outside the church numbered about 5000 people* They pressed in on Romano, who wofe full dress and carried a top hat. His mother was gowned in black and wore a tiny hat. A few minutes later, the bride's mother, Romilde Villani, arrived followed quickly by Sophia Loren, whi was dressed in a simple ivory-colored tailleur. Sophia's arrival caused a furor that swept through the tight packed throng and even into the church. The tumult increased with the arrival of the bride in a Rolls Royee. She wore a heavy veil @nd appeared vexy emotional. By the time the bride reached the altar, Romano had completely recovered from the dizzy spell. But the tumult increased inside the tightly packed church. Photographers1 flash guns biased away at such a rate that Bishop Bonacini threatened not to perform the ceremony. Police had to intervene to clear the area around the altar so that the ceremony could proceed. The wedding ceremony was followed by a reception for 700 invited guests. Before going on their honeymoon, Romans and his bride planned to visit the nearby cemetery of San Casclano to place flowers on the grave of Benito Mussolini. Romano and his bride will make their home in Rome in a seven-room apartment given them by Sophia Leren and her husband, movie-producer Carlo Pontl. .

La Generazione dell’Ottanta (The Generation of the Eighties) is a generation of Italian composers born in the 1880s, all of whom reached their artistic maturity between the two World Wars and who made it a point to part ways musically from the preceding generations that were rooted in operatic music, especially in the Verismo tradition. The names commonly associated with the Generazione are Alfredo Casella (1883-1947), Gian Francesco Malipiero (1882-1973), Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968), and Ottorino Respighi (1879- 1936). In their efforts to create a new music that sounded unmistakingly Italian and fueled by the musical nationalism rampant throughout Europe at the time, the four composers took inspiration from the pre-Romantic music of their country. Individually and collectively, they embarked on a journey to bring back what they considered the golden age of Italian music, with each one yielding a different result. iii Through the creation of artistic associations facilitated by the fascist government, the musicians from the Generazione established themselves on the international scene and were involved with performances of their works around the world.

This dissertation discusses film melodrama in its visual, gestural, and aural manifestations. My focus is on the persistence of melodrama and the traces it leaves on post-World War II Italian cinema: from the Neorealist canon of the 1940s to works that engage with the psychological and physical, private, and collective traumas after the experience of a totalitarian regime (Cavani’s Il portiere di notte, 1974), to postmodern Viscontian experiments set in a 21st-century capitalist society (Guadagnino’s Io sono l’amore, 2009). The aural dimension is fundamental as an opening to the epistemology of each film. I pay particular attention to the presence of operatic music – as evoked directly or through semiotic displacement involving the film’s aesthetic and expressive figures – and I acknowledge the existence of a long legacy of practical and imaginative influences, infiltrations and borrowings between the screen and the operatic stage in the Italian cinematographic tradition.

Lippman (Independent Scholar) Published on H-War (November, 2007) Sins of the Father, Whitewashed by the Son When Benito Mussolini is remembered today, he is often seen as a comic figure of ineptitude, clowning from his balcony on the Piazza Venezia, bouncing about, jowls rolling, head flung back, spouting absurd rhetoric in Italian. His works are seen as farce (the manifold failures of his armed forces) or as tragedy (the destruction of defenseless Ethiopia). It is difficult to remember now that when Mussolini first took power in Italy, and indeed, until he invaded Ethiopia, he was not seen as a clown, but regarded as a "superman" who reformed and modernized the backward Italian nation, dragged its peasantry kicking and screaming into the twentieth century, unifying it with a mixture of grand programs and grander ceremonies. He may have ordered his blackshirted goons to beat his opponents savagely, but by golly, Mussolini made the trains run on time. After Mussolini's troops suffered massive defeats at the hands of smaller and weaker British and Greek forces, however, his image became that of a buffoonish and incompetent clown, dragging an unwilling nation to hopeless defeat in order to satisfy his vanity and arrogance. To these two Janus-like views of Il Duce, his son, Romano Mussolini, adds another, that of paterfamilias.

Ventresca Associate Professor Department of History King’s University College University of Western Ontario Prepared for presentation at the conference: "After the Fall: Theory and Practice of Post-Intervention Security" Centre for Security and Defence Studies (CSDS) The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University Lord Elgin Hotel, Ottawa, 9-11 March 2006 Introduction: When U.S forces captured Saddam Hussein in December 2003, and the first images of the fallen Iraqi dictator were beamed around the world, it was difficult for the historian of the 20th century to avoid thinking of obvious and not-so-obvious analogies to the fall of authoritarian regimes in the preceding century. The same was true months later, when Saddam and the leading figures of his regime – including Ali Hassan al- Majid, the notorious ‘Chemical Ali’ – found themselves in hastily organized courtrooms answering to young and inexperienced Iraqi judges about various crimes committed during the long life of the Baathist regime. For years, pundits and politicians have been drawing comparisons between Saddam’s regime and Nazi Germany, often to the consternation or at least unease of professional historians. A cursory perusal of any major search engine combining the names ‘Hussein’ and ‘Hitler’ yields hundreds of hits; not surprising, of course, given the currency of the Hitler-Hussein analogy in public memory. Now, as the world watches – sporadically, these days – the trials of the former Iraqi leaders by an Iraqi national court – the Iraqi Special Tribunal – echoes of the great 1 war crimes trials of the postwar era, notably at Nuremberg and Tokyo, are impossible to ignore.

Nomination Form International Memory of the World Register
NOMINATION FORM INTERNATIONAL MEMORY OF THE WORLD REGISTER 1 SUMMARY 1‐0 Istituto Nazionale L.U.C.E. (acronym for L’Unione Cinematografica Educativa), founded in 1925, was the main source of information, education and mass propaganda in Italy during fascism. Its heritage is made up of about 3.000 newsreels, 3.000 documentaries and 300.000 photographs. Following the institutional changes determined by the founding of the Italian Republic in 1946, Istituto Luce radically changed its nature. However, as a "legitimate successor" of the previous company, it inherited the entire cultural heritage produced in the 1920s and 1930s, and has maintained it in an unbroken chain of custody to this day. The cultural heritage here nominated consists of newsreels produced between 1928 and 1946 and photographs produced between 1927 and 1956; however, the most significant portion is the fonds relating to the 1920s and 1930s. 1956 is the date of the formal termination of Istituto Luce’s mandate. This cultural heritage as a whole is an indispensable and unique resource for understanding the Italian and European political, economic, cultural and social context of the time. Its nomination is also motivated by the fact that these materials are still requested and used today by scholars from a variety of disciplines: contemporary history, history of cinema and photography, anthropology, art history, cultural studies and visual studies, history of technology, architecture and urbanism, etc. In brief, the fonds of Istituto Nazionale L.U.C.E. are a unique source for information about Italy in the years of the fascist regime, about the international context of fascism (including East Africa and Albania, but also well beyond the areas occupied by Italy during fascism, especially as regards the period of the Second World War), and about mass society in the 1920s and 1930s.
