Summer 2021 Soaring Activity Guide MORENO VALLEY may - august 2021 ACTIVITY GUIDE (see back inside cover for details) SUMMER CAMPS See pg. 7 PARKS&COMMUNITY SERVICES Dear Moreno Valley Residents, This edition of the Soaring Activity Guide is a welcome sign of how far we’ve come as a community since this time last year. A year ago, in an effort to slow the spread of the virus, we had to move all activities online. Now, a year later, thanks to our combined efforts to practice masking, distancing and handwashing, and to get vaccinated, the situation has improved enough that we are able to once again provide many activities in person with safety modifications. The City of Moreno Valley’s classes, sports, and other programs are some of the most popular services provided by the City, with tens of thousands of residents, from toddlers to seniors, taking advantage of at least one of the activities listed here. Inside, you’ll find we offer opportunities for residents of all ages to do something they know and enjoy or maybe try something completely new that promises an exciting new experience. So I urge you to consider all the possibilities included in this Guide, including activities you’re unfamiliar with. One of them could start you on a new and interesting pathway. Wishing you all a wonderfully healthy and fun summertime in MoVal! Dr. Yxstian A. • Madison Community Foundation 2020 Annual Report
Annual Report 2020 On the Cover The Downtown Street Art and Mural Project As the nation struggled to contain the coronavirus pandemic, it was further rocked by the death of George Floyd on May 25 while in the custody of the Minneapolis police. Floyd’s death set off protests across the nation, and around the world. In Madison, peaceful daytime protests were followed by looting in the evenings, which forced many businesses to shutter their storefronts with plywood. The Madison Arts Commission, funded in part by a Community Impact grant from Madison Community Foundation (MCF), responded to the bleak sight of State Street by creating the Downtown Street Art and Mural Project, which engaged dozens of local artists to use these spaces as an opportunity for expression and civic engagement. More than 100 murals, including the one on our cover, were painted in and around State Street, creating a vibrant visual dialogue addressing racism, memorializing lost lives and inspiring love. Artists participated in panel discussions and were highlighted in local and national media. “Let’s Talk About It: The Art, The Artists and the Racial Justice Movement on Madison’s State Street,” a book focused on the project, was produced by (and is available through) the American Family Insurance Institute for Corporate and Social Impact. In addition, several of the murals will become part of the permanent collection of the Wisconsin Historical Museum. MCF’s long-standing vision — that greater Madison will be a vibrant and generous place where all people thrive — is impossible to achieve without ending racism. We remain committed to this journey.

  • WEST Sidemartin Drive
Approximate boundaries: N-W. Vliet St; S-W. Martin Dr-W. Highland Blvd; E-N. 35th St; W-Wisconsin Hwy 175 WEST SIDEMartin Drive NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION Comprising little more than a square half mile in size, Martin Drive is tucked away between the Olmstead-designed Washington Park to the north and Historic Miller Valley to the south. It’s chiefly one-way streets are tree-lined, and many of the homes are duplexes. Both Highland Boulevard and Martin Drive are winding streets. Due to its small size, the neighborhood has only one commercial corridor and this is on Vliet Street. HISTORY Much of the small Martin Drive neighborhood was developed in the 1920s. Unlike the elite areas on nearby Highland Boulevard, this became a working class neighborhood. Workers living in Martin Drive had several large employers nearby, including Harley Davidson, Miller Brewery, and the Transport Company. Other industrial employers were just a few blocks away in the Menomonee Valley. Bordered by the sprawling Washington Park to the north, residents had quick access to picnic areas, programs, and the county’s zoo. Many could stop to observe all the outdoor animals on their way to work or school. Much changed during the era of freeway building, when I-41 cut into Washington Park and the zoo was relocated to the far west side of Milwaukee. Many homes were also lost on 47th Street between Vliet Street and Juneau Avenue. The neighborhood became even smaller, but did not lose its cohesiveness. Early populations The early population of Martin Drive was almost totally German.
