Created by the artist Candy Chang, Before I Die is a global art project that invites people to contemplate mortality and share their personal aspirations in public. The Before I Die project reimagines how walls of our cities can help us grapple with death and meaning as a community.

2 VOLUNTEER Join hundreds of volunteers to help make this year’s Doors Open a success. Volunteers sign up for at least one, four-hour shift to help greet and count visitors at each featured Doors Open site throughout the weekend. Established in 1999, 4 Seasons is Wisconsin’s largest indoor skateboard facility offering skateboarding, BMX biking and scootering. Officially opening soon, this museum shares the story of the African-American experience from pre-captivity to the present as an integral part of U.S. history. Enter the 1950s-era brick building to find three original Allis-Chalmers 20 million-gallon centrifugal pumps, giant transmission pipes, and the old scale used to weigh chlorine that disinfected water in the Kilbourn Reservoir, which was open to the air until 1979. The station was decommissioned in 2004, the water reservoir removed, and a hill in the park was built in its place. Visitors will find displays of historic photos about the 145-year-old Milwaukee Water Works. MILWAUKEE WATER WORKS NORTH POINT TOWER, 2288 N LAKE DR Saturday: 10 am–5 pm, Sunday: Not Open First/Main Floor Only This 1874 Gothic Revival-style tower was one of of the first facilities for the Milwaukee Water Works, which initially pumped lake water for fire suppression and drinking. MWW today provides treated drinking water to 16 communities. Visitors will be able to step into the tower’s base and stand face to face with a looming, vertical 120-foot-tall iron pipe that was part of the original steam engine system. The original staircase is not safe and will not be open for public use.

The Wisconsin Black Historical Society Museum documents and preserves the historical heritage of African descent in Wisconsin. The Museum exhibits, collects and disseminates materials depicting this heritage. A fully functioning music school since 1934, this house was completed in 1904 for industrialist Charles L. McIntosh. WMSE STUDIOS—MSOE KRUEGER HALL, 820 N MILWAUKEE ST Saturday: 12 pm–5 pm, Sunday: 1 pm–4 pm (no tripods) Originally a 1920s automobile tire retailer, this red brick/concrete building is now home to 3,200 watt public radio station WMSE, owned and operated by MSOE. The station has provided Milwaukee with a diverse mix of all music 24 hours a day for 38 years. Tour the Zimmerman Architectural Studios WMSE studios, meet some of the volunteer DJs, and be awed by the station’s music library WRTP/BIG STEP CENTER OF EXCELLENCE, 3841 W WISCONSIN AVE Saturday: 10 am–5 pm, Sunday: Not Open First/Main Floor Only Built in 1928, the Drott Tractor Company showroom and manufacturing Building remains almost unchanged. Take a self-guided tour of the main floor of this beautiful Mediterranean Revival building and learn about the green roof. There will also be brief guided tours of a second floor vault and a lower level training area. ZIMMERMAN ARCHITECTURAL STUDIOS, INC. , 2122 W MOUNT VERNON AVE Saturday: 10 am–5 pm, Sunday: 10 am–5 pm

This building was originally home to West Side Works for the Milwaukee Gas Light Company and provided gas to light homes and street lamps. Visitors to Zimmerman Architectural Studios can learn about the building’s history through photographic exhibits and see design work from the 110-year history of Zimmerman Architectural Studios. Guests are free to explore the building at their own pace, chat with an employee to learn more about the renovation and rehabilitation process, or just relax in the gallery and watch a slideshow while children (and adults!) build their own architectural creations with Legos.
