  • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

  • INITIALS C.C. Liner Notes
Chris Connelly : INITIALS C.C. Out-takes, Rarities and Personal Favourites 1982-2002 vol.1 01. Detestimony – Fini Tribe: This was the “A” side of an EP called “Let the Tribe Grow,” written and recorded when the Fini Tribe was going through great musical changes. We had acquired an Ensoniq ‘Mirage’ sampling keyboard, and as was the same for a lot of bands at the time, it changed everything, opened up a lot of doors, and led us into some very uncharted waters. The actual piece was whittled down from a fifteen-minute opus we had written. I remember being in Philip Pinsky’s bedroom one night with John Vick. Philip’s then-roommate, Lindsay, gave us an old quarter-inch reel of tape he had. On it was a beautiful recording of the church bells you hear on the song; we sampled them and came up with the melody. The EP actually did better than any of us had anticipated and became a sort of hit in the Ibiza clubs at the very advent of the acid house/rave phenomenon. We actually went ahead and re-wrote/re- structured the song for the WaxTrax! Records release (“Make it Internal/Detestimony Revisited”) a couple of years later. 02. Mania – Murder Inc.: Certainly what I feel is the most compelling song on the one and only album released by Murder Inc. The band was basically Killing Joke, minus Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke’s singer), plus me, as well as the original drummer, Paul Fergusson, and newer drummer, Martin Atkins. The sessions took place at Pachyderm Studios in rural Minnesota during September of 1991.

Their TITLE: Requiem For Hell albums have found inspiration in the inescapable CATALOG: TRR273 coexistence of love and loss, faith and hopelessness, RELEASE DATE: October 14, 2016 light and darkness. Fittingly, their new album, Requiem FORMAT: CD / 2xLP / Digital For Hell, incorporates all of those conflicts into the one UPC CD: 6566053273287 universal inevitability in life: Birth, and death. UPC LP: 656605327310 BOX LOT: CD: 35 / LP: 18 Requiem For Hell finds MONO returning to longtime TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: friend and collaborator, Steve Albini. After MONO and NORTH AMERICA ONLY (USA, Albini's band, Shellac, toured Japan together last year, CANADA, MEXICO) they realized how much they missed the (often wordless) VINYL IS NON-RETURNABLE creative dialogue they shared during the making of many of their most memorable albums – beginning with TRACK LISTING Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky... (2004) and 1. Death In Rebirth (8:05) culminating with Hymn To Immortal Wind (2009). The 2. Stellar (4:59) rebirth of the Albini collaboration for Requiem For Hell 3. Requiem For Hell (17:49) also coincided with the birth of a close friend's first child, 4. Ely’s Heartbeat (8:27) whose actual in utero heartbeat serves as the foundation 5. The Last Scene (6:43) for the aptly named "Ely's Heartbeat." For MONO, it all felt so right, so inevitable. SALES POINTS The first MONO album recorded by Requiem For Hell is undeniably heavier and scarier than Steve Albini since Hymn To The most of MONO's output to this point – hear the dizzying Immortal Wind (2009) 18-minute title track for example – but it also carries some of their most sublime moments.

A fast, upbeat, peppy song. Music plays as Jordan speaks, then fades out. 00:00:22 Jordan Host Trash Talk is a hardcore punk band. Think Black Flag or Suicidal Tendencies and you’re starting to get the idea. If you read a profile of the band, odds are the writer will let you know that Trash Talk is your favorite rapper’s favorite punk band. So, what does that mean? Well, there’s the label they recorded on, for one. Odd Future. The same place that was home to Tyler the Creator, The Internet, and others. They’ve also toured with rappers like Action Bronson and they collaborate with producers who normally work in hip-hop. So, at any given Trash Talk show, you’ll see a bunch of hardcore kids in the crowd, but also some Action Bronson fans, and a few Odd Future fans, too. A lot of hardcore bands talk a big game about unity and togetherness, but Trash Talk practices it. Their newest release is an EP called Squalor, and the whole thing is produced by Kenny Beats, another guy who usually works in hip- hop.

  • Nirvana – in Utero
In Utero achieved their goal, as In Utero is arguably one of the most abrasive, raw sounding works Nirvana has produced, and as is Nirvana’s custom, the lyrics almost never have one solid interpretation. There are twelve regular tracks and one bonus, in order they are: “Serve The Servants”, “Scentless Apprentice”, “Heart Shaped Box”, “Rape Me”, “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle”, “Dumb”, “Very Ape”, “Milk It”, “Pennyroyal Tea”, “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter”, “Tourette’s”, “All Apologies”, and lastly the bonus track “Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip”. All Nirvana albums have their share of dark jokes and jadedness, but with Kurt Cobain’s suicide on April 5th, 1994, less than seven In Utero is Nirvana’s fourth and final studio months after the release of In Utero, many album, it was released in 1993. It went Platinum followers of Nirvana have interpreted the in the United States, Canada, and Britain. Kurt album as a kind of suicide note. Excerpts from what the press has said about some of Cheer-Accident’s past releases: WHAT SEQUEL? 2006 PRAVDA Featuring: Scott Ashley (Guitar), Thymme Jones (Vocals, Drums, Clarinet, Trumpet, Recorder, various keyboard instruments), Jeff Libersher (Bass, Guitar, Piano, Trumpet, bg. Vocals), John McEntire (Overdubs, Mixing), Julie Pomerleau (Violin), Jessica Ruffins (Engineer), Toby Summerfield (Double Bass) “Cheer-Accident seems to thrive on the contradictions of experimental music. For every straight-ahead piano-driven pop number there's a song flailing hard rock riffs with abandon, and usually these two opposing genres are place right next to one another. …the group does an admirable job synthesizing an avant-garde pop collection from decades old indie rock basics and eccentric asides. There are shades of Pavement, Unwound and Sonic Youth in the slightly atonal slacker guitar strum on "Keep in Touch," the pogoing chorus punctuation seems particularly Malkmus-ian. "Go Gone Green" has a great drive of '70s prog/jazz... Jesus Lizard skronk spreads out all over "Surviving a Methodology;" chugging guitars cut a sinister path through a rhythm section bent on strange time signatures. …as an album of '90s fringe indie rock revisited, it's a fine statement.” – Aaron Shaul, Ink 19, July 2007, www.ink19.com “… Cheer-Accident has been dirtying their hands in some form or another for over twenty-years and it’s obvious that music is the fruit of their hard work. … What Sequel? finds the band actually introducing the word “concise” into their terminology, thanks in large part to the efforts of producer John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea And Cake).
