Let me backtrack. In the mid-1990s, Chris Buck was living in New York. I was living in Toronto, his hometown, where he often visited. There was a professional photography studio down on Spadina Avenue where photographers could develop their pictures: imagine the darkest hallway, flanked up and down by little developing labs, each with its own timer and projecting lamp and red light. You’d expose your photographic paper, then leave your cubby and walk down the hall and slip your exposed paper into a machine in the wall, and wait 60 seconds for it to come out. No messing with chemicals. It felt so futuristic. It probably felt more futuristic at the time than cell phone cameras feel today. I developed pictures there, Chris developed pictures there, everyone did. However it can happen in a totally dark hallway (or perhaps these things only happen in totally dark hallways), Chris and I struck up some kind of friendship or attraction. He was older than me—in his early thirties then—but he knew photography, and we quickly became friends. Went camping together, had long conversations about art, I wrote a story about him, we might have kissed. Eventually I wanted to take a trip to New York. Since he was the only person I knew there, I stayed with him. The thing I remember best about his spare Chinatown apartment was a Polaroid of the Spice Girls taped to his fridge (the shoot appears in this book). He showed me around town, had me run errands for him in parts of the city I did not know, I got career advice from Malcolm Gladwell at the New Yorker offices, and I interviewed Sassy magazine’s former editor Jane Pratt. It was the trip of a lifetime, except Chris refused to take naked pictures of me. I asked him every day, and every day he put me off. “Why do you want this?” he asked. “Wouldn’t not-naked pictures be just as good, if not better?” No, I wanted naked pictures. Even I didn’t know why it was so important to me. Finally, the morning before I was supposed to leave, with tremendous exasperation, I asked him if he was or was not going to take the pictures, and he relented.

Joker (2019 film) - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(2019_film) Joker (2019 film) Joker is a 2019 American psychological thriller film directed by Todd Joker Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content.

  • Derogatory Discourses of Veganism and the Reproduction of Speciesism in UK 1 National Newspapers Bjos 1348 134..152
The British Journal of Sociology 2011 Volume 62 Issue 1 Vegaphobia: derogatory discourses of veganism and the reproduction of speciesism in UK 1 national newspapers bjos_1348 134..152 Matthew Cole and Karen Morgan Abstract This paper critically examines discourses of veganism in UK national newspapers in 2007. In setting parameters for what can and cannot easily be discussed, domi- nant discourses also help frame understanding. Discourses relating to veganism are therefore presented as contravening commonsense, because they fall outside readily understood meat-eating discourses. Newspapers tend to discredit veganism through ridicule, or as being difficult or impossible to maintain in practice. Vegans are variously stereotyped as ascetics, faddists, sentimentalists, or in some cases, hostile extremists. The overall effect is of a derogatory portrayal of vegans and veganism that we interpret as ‘vegaphobia’. We interpret derogatory discourses of veganism in UK national newspapers as evidence of the cultural reproduction of speciesism, through which veganism is dissociated from its connection with debates concerning nonhuman animals’ rights or liberation. This is problematic in three, interrelated, respects. First, it empirically misrepresents the experience of veganism, and thereby marginalizes vegans. Second, it perpetuates a moral injury to omnivorous readers who are not presented with the opportunity to understand veganism and the challenge to speciesism that it contains. Third, and most seri- ously, it obscures and thereby reproduces

  • Billy Bob Thornton Interview
A Conversation with Billy Bob Thornton by Frank Goodman Puremusic 1/2002 I had known that Billy Bob was slated to star in the new Travis Tritt video, “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde.” Brother JB is our publisher, and he and my brother-in-law Gary Falcon manage Travis, so I’d been privy to the video developments. Everybody was up about it, it was obviously not going to be your average Country video. It doesn’t take much to get me to pack a suitcase and go almost anywhere, my gypsy ways never changed. So when it occurred to JB that flying me out to L.A. might land us a Puremusic interview with Billy Bob Thornton about his new record, I was basically in the air. I didn’t mind waiting for JB to turn up at LAX a couple of hours after me, I was engrossed in Ann Patchett’s The Magician’s Assistant, and having a big time. We got out to the high desert location, outside Palmdale. There’s an old abandoned little motel out there called The Four Aces, it’s used exclusively for videos and movies today. The desert’s funny like that. Something goes out of business, they just leave it there and walk away, let the elements have at it. I took some pictures of this old Spanish-style mortuary, I liked the sign that said “Open.” I really enjoyed the record, Private Radio. I know, we don’t usually cotton to records by actors. Visions of William Shatner singing “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” or the shocking crooning of Jim Nabors comes to mind.

  • 275. – Part One
    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.
