The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround is quite pleasing, too. The band's previous live album SHOW (1994) sounded pretty piss poor as I recall and this is a very decent mix, everything sounds great - the rhythm section is strong, the guitar is razor sharp and Yow stills sounds like someone duct-taped inside of a garbage can thrown into a pool screaming for help from the bottom of the deep end. Special features include a photo gallery of the PODCASTS performance and mp3's of the entire show that you can transfer to your computer and mp3 player, very cool. 42nd Street Drive-In All My Heroes Wear Masks Track Listing Bloody Good Horror •Puss [LIAR] Cadaver Lab •Seasick [GOAT] Creepy Kitch •Boilermaker [LIAR] Dead Lantern Splattercast •Gladiator [LIAR] Double Feature •Destroy Before Reading [DOWN] Dread Media •Mouthbreather [GOAT] •Blue Shot [SHOT] Drunken Zombie •Glamorous[LASH EP] Fearshop •Killer McHann [HEAD] Fearshop.Com Metal Podcast •One Evening [HEAD] Horror Etc •Then Comes Dudley [GOAT] Horrorphilia •Chrome [CHROME 7"] [TV AS Eyes"and "Abstract Nympho by CHROME] JAFMP •Nub [GOAT] Mondo Movie •Blockbuster [PURE] Motion Picture Massacre http://mcbastardsmausoleum.blogspot.com/2011/11/dvd-review-j... 1/11/2012 McBASTARD'S MAUSOLEUM: DVD Review: THE JESUS ... If you're a fan of THE JESUS LIZARD this is a no-brainer. That said, if you're not familiar with band this could be quite a shock to the system, honestly the music BLOGS here is not for every alterna-rock fan out there. This DVD and the music therein A Hero Never Dies made my wife physically sick and pretty angry, she actually stormed outta the room Beasts in Human Skin in disgust, so try not to anger everyone in your household with it unless that's Just something you like to do. I saw JL in 1994 with KEPONE and PEGBOY here in Bloodtype Online Tucson, AZ at The Downtown Performance Center (R.I.P.) and watching 'em again Body Count brought me right back to that savage performance, it's good stuff. • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

  • Gendered Viewing Strategies: a Critique of Holocaust-Related Films That Eroticize, Monsterize and Fetishize the Female Body
Title: Gendered Viewing Strategies: A Critique of Holocaust-related Films that Eroticize, Monsterize and Fetishize the Female Body. First Author: Dr Stacy Banwell Co-author: Dr Michael Fiddler Introduction In her chapter ‘Patriarchy, Objectification, and Violence against Women in Schindler's List and Angry Harvest’, Shapiro considers Schweickart’s essay on ‘Reading Ourselves: Toward a Feminist Theory of Reading.’1 In this essay Schweickart talks about androcentric reading strategies. This approach identifies texts that reproduce gender hierarchies, ascribing agency to men while objectifying and immascualting women. Drawing upon this work, Shapiro apples this to two Holocaust-related films: Spielberg’s (1993) Schindler’s List and Holland’s (1985) Angry Harvest. In her analysis of these films, Shapiro comes to the conclusion that in Schindler’s List the feminization of the objectified female ‘Other’ is taken for granted and therefore rendered invisible.2 This is in contrast to Angry Harvest – where the audience is asked to consider how violence is caused by gender inequalities and the objectification of women. This process of objectification and immasculation is illustrated in a sequence in Schindler’s List, where the Commandant of the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp, Amon Goeth (as played by Ralph Fiennes), bare-chested, aims his rifle at his naked Jewish mistress whilst she lies on his bed. Horowitz suggests that this scene equates masculinity with killing. The rifle here represents the penis. Further, as Goeth does not discharge his rifle and shoot her, but rather he moves past and urinates, this “…sequence equalizes the acts of shooting, fornication, and urination.” It “asserts an equivalence among Jews, his mistress, and the toilet, all repositories of Nazi effluvia.” Here we witness “[a]trocity…enacted with semen, urine, or gunshot.” 3 It is possible to view this equation as a critique of Nazism, patriarchy and male sexuality.
