Fennici 43: 390–406. A review of previously published cladistic analyses of Polistes is presented. The two most recent analyses of Polistes are shown to be largely consistent phylogenetically. Although the taxonomy implied by each differs, this difference is shown to be mostly due to taxon sampling. After the review, a phylogenetic analysis of Polistes — the most data-rich yet undertaken — is presented. The analysis includes new data and the data from previously published analyses. The differing conclusions of the previous studies are discussed in light of the new analysis. After discussing the status of subge- neric taxonomy in Polistes, the new phylogeny is used to test an important hypothesis regarding the origin of social behavior: the haplodiploidy hypothesis of Hamilton. Prior phylogenetic analyses so while these studies achieved their goal, with within Polistes resolutions leading to rejection of Emery’s Rule, they had little to say about broader phylogenetic Cladistic analysis of species-level relationships patterns within the genus. -

(Email: [email protected]) Abstract The genus Vespula Thomson, 1869, is reviewed from the Indian subcontinent. New synonymy is Vespa orbata var. aurulenta du Buysson, 1905, = Vespula structor (Smith, 1870). The following species are newly recorded from various states of India as follows: V. nursei Archer, 1981, from Delhi, Sikkim and Uttarakhand; V. orbata (du Buysson, 1902) from Nagaland; V. flaviceps (Smith, 1870) from West Bengal; V. germanica (Fabricius, 1793) from Himachal Pradesh; V. structor (Smith, 1870) from Arunachal Pradesh; V. vulgaris (Linnaeus, 1758) from Himachal Pradesh. Parasitic association of Strepsiptera is observed in one worker specimen of V. flaviceps. A modified key to species of the Indian subcontinent is provided. The objective of the study was to find out the number of species of the family and to mark the distribution of the species of the family Vespidae in various locations of the study area. The wasps were collected with the help of hand net through active search, killed with insecticide and preserved in insect boxes having naphthalene balls as preservatives. Species richness were calculated using Margalef and Menhinick indices while species diversity was calculated using Simpson diversity index. The most abundant subfamily was Polistinae with 65% abundance while the least abundant was the Eumeninae with 2% abundance. However, the most diverse and species rich subfamily is Eumeninae with a Simpson (1-D) value of 0.803, Menhinick and Margalef indices values of 1.540 and 2.543, respectively. Among the seven tehsils, Kabal is the most species rich and diverse having Margalef value 2.408, Menhinick Value 0.514 and Simpson (1-D) value 0.777 while Bahrain is the least species rich and having no diversity. -

Munis Entomology & Zoology, 16 (1): 457-464] ABSTRACT: Aculeata hymenopterans play a crucial role in ecology and economics. Diversity analysis of 901 Aculeata wasps at Chittagong University Campus a site in Bangladesh was performed by sequencing DNA barcodes (658 bp sequence from the 5′-end of cytochromeoxidase I). Specimens were collected by a Malaise trap from April 2014 to March 2015. The results revealed 22 species and 42 genera from 20 families in three superfamilies namely Apoidea, Chrysidoidea and Vespoidea. Among them 15 species, 22 genera, two subfamilies (Dolichoderinae and Ponerinae), and one family named Dryinidae are the first county records in Bangladesh. All the specimen records, with the Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) are available on the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD). However, solitary wasps sting in subduing prey, while social wasps do so in defense of the colony. The structure of the stinger is remarkably uniform across the large family that comprises both solitary and social species. The most notable source of variation is in the number and strength of barbs at the tips of the slender sting lancets that penetrate the wound in stinging. These are more numerous and robust in New World social species with very large colonies, so that in stinging human skin they often cannot be withdrawn, leading to sting autotomy, which is fatal to the wasp. This phenomenon is well-known from honey bees. Abstract: The physical features of the stinger are compared in 51 species of vespid wasps: 4 eumenines and zethines, 2 stenogastrines, 16 independent-founding polistines, 13 swarm-founding New World polistines, and 16 vespines. The overall structure of the stinger is remarkably uniform within the family. Goto2, Kazuya Murata3, Hideaki Matsuda3, Yasushi Shigeri4, Tomohiro Imura5, Hidetoshi Inagaki6 and Tetsuro Shinada1* Abstract Background: Mass spectrometry-guided venom peptide profiling is a powerful tool to explore novel substances from venomous animals in a highly sensitive manner. In this study, this peptide profiling approach is successfully applied to explore the venom peptides of a Japanese solitary carpenter bee, Xylocopa appendiculata (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Apidae: Anthophila: Xylocopinae: Xylocopini). Although interesting biological effects of the crude venom of carpenter bees have been reported, the structure and biological function of the venom peptides have not been elucidated yet. Methods: The venom peptide profiling of the crude venom of X. appendiculata was performed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectroscopy. The venom was purified by a reverse-phase HPLC. The purified peptides were subjected to the Edman degradation, MS/MS analysis, and/or molecular cloning methods for peptide sequencing. Biological and functional characterization was performed by circular dichroism analysis, liposome leakage assay, and antimicrobial, histamine releasing and hemolytic activity tests. Results: Three novel peptides with m/z 16508, 1939.3, and 1900.3 were isolated from the venom of X. appendiculata. The peptide with m/z 16508 was characterized as a secretory phospholipase A2 (PLA2) homolog in which the characteristic cysteine residues as well as the active site residues found in bee PLA2s are highly conserved. -

Dir is situated in the North of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa (A). Department of Zoology, at an elevation of 1420 meters with an altitude of 35.1977° N and latitude 71.8749° E. A total of 248 Islamia College University, specimens were collected from the study area from April, 2015 to November, 2017.
