In 2019, there was no measured exceedances of Air Quality Objectives set down under Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) requirements. A graph can be found in Appendix A that shows monitoring results from 2015 to 2019. This long-term chart shows that measured concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) are declining. Air Quality in Basildon Air pollution is associated with a number of adverse health impacts. It is recognised as a contributing factor in the onset of heart disease and cancer. Additionally, air pollution particularly affects the most vulnerable in society: children and older people, and those with heart and lung conditions. There is also often a strong correlation with equalities issues, because areas with poor air quality are also often the less affluent areas1,2.

Mr John Canvey Yes Spears Mrs Karen Yes with Canvey Sadler caveats Proposal - Completely bulldoze the existing town centre , approach a leading supermarket chain ( Asda , Tesco , Sainsbury , Morrisons ) to build one purpose built complex - Everything housed under one roof , with suitable access roads. That could house all their requirements plus have ample provisions to house local shops , banks , restaurants Mr Eddie and local amenities. Current examples - Asda at Canvey Yes Crace Shoeburyness and South Woodham Ferris , Tesco at Pitsea. However there would be no accommodation for charity shops or takeaways that currently makes our town centre look like a shanty town. No one from surrounding areas currently comes onto the island except to shop at Morrisons , where they can easily drive to , park , shop and then leave with very little trouble at all. The town centre lacks appeal. Unattractive, does not inspire C Pager Canvey Yes people to come to the island to visit/shop.

Hydrodynamic and loss of life modelling for the 1953 Canvey Island fl ood HRPP 368 Manuela Di Mauro & Darren Lumbroso Reproduced from: Flood Risk Management - Research and Practice Proceedings of FLOODrisk 2008 Keble College, Oxford, UK 30 September to 2 October 2008 Flood Risk Management: Research and Practice – Samuels et al. (eds) © 2009 Taylor & Francis Group, London, ISBN 978-0-415-48507-4 Hydrodynamic and loss of life modelling for the 1953 Canvey Island flood Manuela Di Mauro & Darren Lumbroso HR Wallingford Ltd, Wallingford, Oxfordshire, UK ABSTRACT: Canvey Island is located in the Thames Estuary. The island is a low-lying alluvial fan covering an area of 18.5 km2, with an average height of approximately 1 m below the mean high water level. Canvey Island is protected against inundation by a network of flood defences. In 1953, the island was inundated by the “Great North Sea Flood” that breached the island’s flood defences and resulted in the deaths of 58 people and the destruction of several hundred houses. As part of the EC funded research project FLOODsite, work was undertaken to set up both a hydrodynamic and an agent-based loss-of-life model of Canvey Island for the 1953 flood. The objective of the work was to obtain a better understanding of the 1953 flood event and to analyse the consequences of breaches in the island’s flood defences in terms of loss of life and injuries. The work under- taken indicates that the agent-based life safety model can provide a scientifically robust method to assess loss of life, injuries and evacuation times for areas that are at risk from flooding in the UK.

  • Annual Report 2019/2020
Canvey Island Town Council ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020 1 History Canvey Island lies off the South East coast of Essex in the Thames estuary. It is a unique place with an interesting and diverse history much of which can be attributed to its relationship with the changing water levels of the River Thames and the fact that the whole of the Island is below sea level. The Island is commonly known for its Dutch influence and became home to around 200 Dutch immigrants in the early 17th century, who it is reported ‘sought refuge from the Duke of Alba, the butcher of Flanders’. Two tiny Dutch cottages are preserved on the Island from this period of the Island’s history one is still inhabited at ‘Canvey Village’ the other is preserved as a museum. At the start of the 20th century, the population of Canvey numbered about 300 people. At about that time, Canvey was heavily promoted as a holiday destination, primarily for Londoner’s, to escape the smog of the big city. By the end of the First World War the population had reached 1,795 and the people still kept coming. Since the 1930’s, the west side of the Island at Hole Haven has been developed for use as oil refineries, and oil and gas storage which has met with a great deal of public opposition. In more recent times, some of the land previously used for this purpose has been ‘reclaimed’ and is currently being developed as a nature reserve. The population of the Island has grown significantly since the turn of the Century to a little under 40,000 (almost 16,000 homes).
