Twinned with the Parish of Embalenhle in South Africa My dear friends in Christ,

th NEWSLETTER Last Thursday (11 October), the Sunday 14th October 2012 throughout the world began the Year of Faith which

Twenty-Eighth Sunday was called for by Pope Benedict XVI. Our of the Year marked the beginning of this special year with a Sunday 21st October 2012 Mass in Brentwood on Thursday evening. Twenty-Ninth Sunday The Holy Father tells us that his overall objective is of the Year that through this Year of Faith we may “rediscover the joy of believing and the enthusiasm for communicating the faith” (Porta Fidei para 1).

Serving the Churches of: In particular, he hopes that we will come to a deeper understanding of the truths of our faith and a

renewed relationship with Jesus, Our Lord. This St Basil the Great Year of Faith marks the 50th anniversary of the Luncies Road SS14 1SD opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of The Most Holy Trinity the Catholic Church. This great body of teaching Wickhay SS15 5AD guides and shapes our Year of Faith just as it shapes the life of the Church. St Therese of Lisieux The scripture this weekend outlines some important Florence Way SS16 6AJ truths about faith. The First Reading helps us to understand that faith is a kind of wisdom; a wisdom

that is rooted in the heart and mind of God and Parish Office which must be treasured above all things. The Second Reading points out that it is the word of God 71 Wickhay, SS15 5AD that communicates wisdom to us; a word that may Mon – Thurs, 9.30 – 5.30 well challenge our attitudes, behaviour and personal preferences. The Gospel however, encourages us Tel 01268 281732 not to be deterred or compromised by such Fax 01268 526691 challenges, but to reinvest ourselves in new ways in following Jesus because the rewards are great. www.basildoncatholics.org Have a faith filled week!

School Form Signing - THIS THURSDAY . Applications for Secondary

st Schools are now open, with most schools having the deadline of 31 October. Check the paperwork carefully and be sure to apply in good time! We are

very blessed to have a fine Catholic secondary school, De La Salle, right in the centre of the parish. Families looking for an all boys school or all girls school also have good choices nearby with St Thomas More in Southend and the Ursuline School in Brentwood. We strongly and warmly encourage Catholic

families to use Catholic schools: there is an ethos and set of values that underpin these schools rooted in the Catholic faith, and it is a priceless gift to your child, sustaining all that happens in the parish and in the home. Each school has detailed admissions criteria, and will require a form to be signed to

show your child is a Baptised Catholic and attending Mass.

Please bring the forms from the school with you and complete the whole form with the exception of the questions which need to be answered by the priest. If they have not provided a supplementary form about your faith then Fr Dominic will provide one for you. You will also need a copy of your child’s Baptism certificate – if you do not have this then the form cannot be signed. If your child was Baptised in Basildon (at any of our three churches) then call Katrina, 01268 281732, and request a new copy.

There will be around sixty forms for Fr Dominic to sign. For this reason please do not ask for them to be signed individually after Masses, but instead please

come at the following times:

th Thursday 18 October, 4.00 – 5.30pm, St Basil’s Presbytery. th Thursday 18 October, 7.00 – 9.00pm, Small Hall, Holy Trinity.

Parish Finance. Should any parishioner require a copy of the Parish financial statements for the financial year ended 5th April 2012, these are available on request from the parish office. By early 2013 the parish Finance Committee will have prepared a summary analysis with key information which will be presented to parishioners to help everybody have a better understanding of the parish financial position.

Sacred Space – in need of some peace? Moments of quiet in a busy week?

Time to think and time to pray? Holy Trinity offers plenty of space, beautiful

th lighting, and a calm atmosphere. The next session takes place on Wednesday 17

October from 7.30 – 8.30pm, with the Blessed Sacrament on the Altar and quiet

classical music playing. Pop in for a few minutes or stay for an hour; in the stillness give space for God’s heart to speak to your heart.

The November Dead List Envelopes are available in each of the churches. The custom is that people put a list of the names of all their departed loved ones inside

the envelope (with a donation) and the list is then placed in a special basket in front of the altars and all our loves ones are remembered in the Masses during November. All the donations received here are given to charity.

Preparation for First Communion – Reminder. The Parents’ meeting, led by Fr th Dominic, is on Tuesday 16 October from 7.30 – 9.00pm in the main hall at Holy Trinity. The Children’s session is on Saturday 20th October from 9.20 – 11.00am.

The Diocesan Deaf Service will be celebrating a Signed Mass in Holy Trinity on Sunday 21st October at 10.30am. Fr Dominic will be the main celebrant and people who are deaf will sign the readings. All are welcome, hearing, hard of hearing and deaf. For more information contact Sister Margaret Duffy, Brentwood Diocesan Pastoral Deaf Service, 803 Road, Woodford Bridge, IG8 8AU Telephone 020 8504 0406 / 07989129091 Email [email protected]

Church Cleaning. More volunteers are needed to help clean St Basil’s Church. At present the commitment would be about once a month. Also cleaners are desperately needed in St Therese, where there is only one person on the rota! If you are able to help please telephone Ann Stockwell on 07974228306 in respect of St Basil’s or speak to Kathy Hallissey for St Therese. Thank you.

Consecration of Holy Trinity Church – Save the Date! On Tuesday 30th October at 7.30pm Thomas will consecrate Holy Trinity Church and the new altar. This is a very important moment in the life of the church; it has not been consecrated before because it did not have a permanent altar. We hope this will be a wonderful evening and would encourage all parishioners to attend whatever your normal church of worship.

Devotions to Our Lady will continue in St Therese church throughout October between 7.30 - 8.30pm on the following dates. Thursday 18th October; Tuesday 23rd October; Monday 29th October

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Anne Bride. Anne’s body will be received into Holy Trinity Church on Tuesday 23rd October at 4.30pm and her Requiem Mass will take place on Wednesday (24th) at 1.30pm. May she rest in peace.

Brenda Doherty RIP. Brenda Doherty was the first head of St Anne Line Infant School and served for over 20 years. Very sadly she passed away last week. To honour her memory, Mass will be celebrated in St Anne Line Infant School on Friday 9th November at 4.30pm. All of those who were taught by Brenda or who worked with her are most welcome to attend, along with parents and friends of the school.

Mass & Service of Remembrance. This year we will be holding a Mass in Holy Trinity Church on Friday 2nd November (The Feast of All Souls) at 7pm which will include a Commemoration of those who have died. In the service the names of all those who have died in the parish within the last year will be read out and there will be an opportunity to light a candle and to pray. We know that friends and relatives of those who have died may come from many different faith backgrounds but this special commemoration of loved ones is open to all faiths and none. If you have a friend or relative who has died within the last year, and whose funeral did not take place in the parish, please contact the parish office on 281732, with details, if you wish their name to be added to the list. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.

Later in November we will be blessing graves and memorials at Pitsea Cemetery – more details to follow. …………………………………………….

From Betty & Eddie Smyth “Thank you to the Sr Clare, Fr Brett, Fr Dominic and all the wonderful friends who supported us and continue to do so during Eddie’s illness. The prayers offered, the drivers, visitors and phone calls, especially when we were in Germany. We would not have survived without all the help lovingly given and gratefully received. We are so blessed to have such a generous and caring community. A Mass in thanksgiving will be arranged for your intentions.” …………………………………………….

A Memorial Mass for Bishop Michael Rowland, Bishop Emeritus of Dundee, will be celebrated in Brentwood Cathedral on Friday 2nd November (the Feast of All Souls) at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Vocations Update – Vocations to Priesthood and the Religious Life

Fr Nick de Keyser and Fr Matthew Bemand were Ordained as Priests of Brentwood Diocese on Saturday 6th October, and Sr Teresa of the Community of Our Lady of Walsingham professed her first vows on September 23rd. In the new term in our seminaries, there are six students currently in training for the Priesthood for Brentwood Diocese, with the likelihood that there will be three further applicants for 2013. In addition one young adult recently began postulancy with the Daughters of Divine Charity, and another one is applying to be a Dominican Brother. A man from our Diocese has just made his First Profession as a Jesuit, and another has been accepted for formation as a Neo- Catechumenate Priest. Please pray for all those discerning vocation to Priesthood and the Religious Life: if you are considering this then please talk to Fr Dominic.

Two wonderful events in late Autumn

A Question of Faith, 28th November, 7.30 – 9.00, Holy Trinity. This is a Deanery event, put on by the Diocese, and it involves two expert panelists – Michelle Moran, who co-founded the Sion Community in Brentwood, is an internationally recognized faith speaker, and is a member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. The PCL are appointed by Pope Benedict and offer advice within the Vatican. Fr Paul Keane is a Cambridge graduate, has a Licence in Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, and is currently Chaplain to the University of Essex. He is the author of books about the English Martyrs. They will be joined by Fr Dominic, and together this panel will answer your questions about faith. This is an event not to be missed, and should be both educational and very enjoyable!

Barry and Margaret Mizen, 4th December, 7.00pm, Holy Trinity Barry and Margaret Mizen lost their son Jimmy when he was just 16. He was killed for no reason and it would have been easy for them to become very bitter. Instead, with the support of their faith, they have devoted the years since 2008 to working for peace, in a spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness. For more about Jimmy, and their work, look at www.jimmymizen.org

They will be visiting De la Salle school during the day, to share their story with those in year 10 and 11 – the age Jimmy was when he died. In the evening, come along to hear their story first hand, and to see what all of us can do to bring peace, forgiveness and hope in even the most difficult situations. This is a Deanery event, for the Year of Faith. This is the sort of evening that can change lives.

For both of these events, no children under 12 years old, please! ……………………………………………
