BIRCH ALLER MINE To the West of Bridford Consols, at Birch Aller , another well-financed attempt to find the northern end of the Valley’s ‘great lead lode’ drove down over 300 ft ( taking it nearly below sea level ) but this investment also failed to prove exploitable quantities of lead or silver. In contrast to the later well-documented activities at Bridford Barytes, there are few references to trace the history of Birch Aller. Even its name is uncertain, being variously described as ‘Birch Aller’, ‘Birch Ellers’ or simply ‘Birch’. All variations however must be drawn from the dense growth of Birch and Alder trees that thrive along the small stream below the mine. No original records of the venture are known to exist, nor have any plans of the underground workings survived. In consequence, what little is known of its short-lived operations is largely derived from brief contemporary reports in t he Mining Journal and from notes compiled by Col.Ramsden, manager, from 1927, of the neighbouring Bridford Barytes Mine, supplemented by what can be inferred from the remains of the engine house and stack, the location of the spoil tips and a final ‘obituary’ notice in the Exeter Flying Post. Reports from the Mining Journal suggst that operations commenced at Birch Aller during 1850 and a notice of sale in the Exeter Flying Post on 1st June 1855 recorded its closure. A definitive work by H G Dines, a geologist working for the Institute of Geological Sciences on Metalliferous Mining in the South West of England, supplemented by a study of The Teign Valley Silver Lead Mines by C J Schmitz agree the probable layout of the workings. -

Key Stage Two Kneeboarding, Ringo Rides and the Aquapark at North Devon Wake Park The children had a great day of adventure on the water at the North Devon Wake Park. They encountered challenges that they hadn’t encountered before and really enjoyed their day. Sports Day Well done to all of the children on Sports Day, they worked really well in their teams and enjoyed the activities. Key Stage Two ‘The Tempest’ The children have been learning about William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ through dance, drama art and music. Class Four directed and filmed it all themselves and decided on everything such as choosing their own costumes and face paints. They have then used their computing skills to record their work and once it has been edited it will be shared with you. Class One/Two The Rainbow Fish End of Term Celebration We have shared a link to the video in the body of the newsletter email. We said goodbye and thank you to Miss Warner. She is going on to teacher training with Exeter University. Miss Oreshko will be joining the Class One teaching team in September alongside Miss Claydon and Mrs Yates. -

Top price of the day was given for a pen of four outstanding pure bred yearling Simmental steers from Alan Brazier of Poltimore at a whopping £1170 apiece whilst another quality bunch of four Simmental bullocks (18m) eased to £1075 a head for Stephen Pearce of Liskeard. A couple of grand Charolais steers (25m) from the Shervington Family, Hittisleigh reached £1150 closely followed by a smart South Devon steer (20m) from Rob & Sue Greep, Cornwood at £1135, the latter also saw tremendous red Limousin steers (18m) make £1110. Groups of well farmed Aberdeen Angus steers (24m) ran to £1085 and £1080 for Russell & Alyson Retter of Cotleigh with later born Angus steers (16m) rising to £1075 for Peter Hendy of Plymouth. No really strong British Blue steers on offer although a group of four very decent Blues (25m) did reach £1040 for Garry Dunn of Okehampton whilst younger store steers saw a stunning Beef Shorthorn cross (11m) from Peter & Jake Chisholm of Hatherleigh make a creditable £980 and a pair of young (13m) Simmental steers from John & Jill Redman, Chagford saw £950 a life. -

Ringing Round THE GUILD OF DEVONSHIRE RINGERS Devon Newsletter 112: December 2018 ‘to promote an environment in which ringing can flourish’. Last Sunday we witnessed what ‘flourish’ looks like – more of that, Guild Events please. Whilst it is impossible to thank all key individuals by name, I RINGING REMEMBERS would like to pay a special tribute to Vicki Chapman – Ringing Remembers Project Coordinator, Colin Chapman – Coordinator’s ‘roadie’, Alan Regin – Steward of the CCCBR Rolls of Honour, Andrew Hall – developer and administrator of the Ringing Remembers web platform, and Bruce and Eileen Butler – who linked thousands of enquirers to guilds, districts and towers. And there are so many others… My thanks go also to all those who have come to ringing through this route; may you continue to develop in skill and gain many happy years of fulfilment in your ringing. And to that widespread army of ringing teachers who have risen to the challenge of training so many enthusiastic learners – well done! Last Sunday was a day of reflection, a day of commemoration, a day of participation. Bellringers everywhere were able to say: ‘I was there – I remembered’. 2011 No. 1 February Reg. Charity No.228966 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE It is with regret that I have to announce that two of our long standing volunteers have resigned. Peter Reay and Ian Farrell between them have served the Society for over twenty-five years. Peter has been editing the Devon Bird Report from 1999 and wrote a section prior to that year. His keenness to ensure accuracy with each report is a testament to him. I worked closely with Peter for six years whilst County Recorder and I know the loss of his service to the Society will be greatly missed. Ian, will be known to members in recent years as our webmaster a job which he performs with enthusiasm and dedication. I first met Ian when acting as legal advisor to the Society on the wording of its new constitution when I first noticed his commitment, business acumen and a keenness to get the job done, a style he showed throughout his service as a trustee on Council, as Chairman of the Publishing Group and right up to present as Vice Chairman. On behalf of the Society I would like to thank both Peter and Ian for their service to the Society and wish them the very best for the future. Whilst Chairman I have set myself various tasks, last year it was the completion of the Birds of Devon book and ensuring the preparation of the Devon Tetrad Atlas was on a sound footing, both thankfully were achieved. This year my task is probably more difficult in that I will attempt to find volunteers to fill vacancies on Council and other posts that are vacant. -
