No let-up in the beef trade with both finished cattle and cull stock selling to the recent strong trade once again. Prime cattle reached creditable a high of 234ppk given for a smart home bred 606kg Limousin heifer from Tom and Hannah Wotton of which realised £1415 whilst cracking others from the same sellers came in at 233ppk and £1478 for a 636kg Limousin steer and their heavyweight 740kg Charolais bullock sold for 208ppk and grossed a massive £1535. Aberdeen Angus prime in demand once again with heifers to 208ppk and £1166 for Nick and Margaret Lugger of and 207ppk and £1215 for Robert and William Reddaway of South Tawton. David Slade, Chagford saw Simmental heifers to 200ppk and £1177 whilst well turned out 620kg bullocks from Adrian Pike of Nymet Rowland reached 191ppk and levelled out just short of £1200. The better of several decent ‘Over Thirty Month’ prime cattle were headed by David Saunders of with a 600kg Charolais steer at 188ppk (£1128) with other overage continental cross bred steers realising £1199 and £1191 for David Harris of Kingsbridge and Robert and Christine Steer of Avonwick respectively. Perhaps not the quality entry of barren cows we have become accustom to over recent weeks although we did top a 178ppk for the second week running with a cracking 648kg red Limousin barrener from Stephen Voysey of Longdown which realised £1150 with his others to 169ppk and £1011. More red Limousin cows from Gerald Vallance, Ashburton reached 149ppk and £1108 whilst terrific Hereford cows from Joe Richardson, Kingsbridge fetched to 160ppk and South Devon’s saw 143ppk and £1078 for Luke Knight of Fluxton. Strong Devon cows from Colleton Barton, drew 129ppk and £943 and Aberdeen Angus sold to 128ppk for Martin Daw of Ugborough. We don’t listen to idle gossip here at Exeter we let the prices do the talking with all barren cows averaging 142.61ppk and a top of 178ppk (£1384) this Monday.
